Book excerpt: In this highly accessible discussion, Bart Ehrman examines the most recent textual and archaeological sources for the life of Jesus, along with the history of first-century Palestine, drawing a fascinating portrait of the man and his teachings. Ehrman shows us what historians have long known about the Gospels and the man who stands behind them. Through a careful evaluation of the New Testament (and other surviving sources, including the more recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Peter), Ehrman proposes that Jesus can be best understood as an apocalyptic prophet--a man convinced that the world would end dramatically within the lifetime of his apostles and that a new kingdom would be created on earth. According to Ehrman, Jesus' belief in a coming apocalypse and his expectation of an utter reversal in the world's social organization not only underscores the radicalism of his teachings but also sheds light on both the appeal of his message to society's outcasts and the threat he posed to Jerusalem's established leadership.

Book Preaching in the New Millennium

Download or read book Preaching in the New Millennium written by Frederick J. Streets and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this absorbing book, George McKenna ranges across the entire panorama of American history to track the development of American patriotism. That patriotism, shaped by Reformation Protestantism and imbued with the American Puritan belief in a providential 'errand', has evolved over 350 years and influenced American political culture in both positive and negative ways, McKenna shows. The germ of the patriotism, an activist theology that stressed collective rather than individual salvation, began in the late 1630s in New England and travelled across the continent, eventually becoming a national phenomenon. Today, American patriotism still reflects its origins in the seventeenth century.By encouraging cohesion in a nation of diverse peoples and inspiring social reform, American patriotism has sometimes been a force for good. But the book also uncovers a darker side of the nation's patriotism: a prejudice against the South in the nineteenth century, for example; or a tendency toward nativism and anti-Catholicism. Ironically, a great reversal has occurred, and today the most fervent believers in the Puritan narrative are the former 'outsiders' - Catholics and Southerners. McKenna offers an interesting new perspective on patriotism's role throughout American history, and he concludes with trenchant thoughts on its role in the post-9/11 era.

Book Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond

Download or read book Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there biblical evidence for a thousand-year earthly kingdom (the Millennium) ruled by Christ before the fulfillment of the new heaven and new earth? Revelation chapter 20 seems to suggest so, but few books of the Bible are so difficult to interpret. And a discussion of the Millennium branches out into many other theological questions about the end times (eschatology): Are these the last days? What must happen before Jesus returns? What part does the church play? This Counterpoints volume compares three views of the Millennium: Premillennial: Christ will come again before this kingdom is established. Postmillennial: our present age represents that kingdom and that the church is and must move toward the fulfillment of this kingdom. Amillennial: a future Millennium is not a literal kingdom, and when Christ returns, he will usher in an immediate new heaven and new earth. Robert B. Strimple, Kenneth L. Gentry Jr., and Craig A. Blaising offer their perspectives, giving their exegetical reasoning. Each of them then responds to the views held by their peers in a respectful and informative setting, making it easy for you to compare their beliefs and gain a better understanding of how this aspect of Christianity's great hope--the return of Jesus--is understood by the church. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book The Renewal of Preaching in the Twenty first Century Second Edition

This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep Faith Meets High Tech here in The Renewal of Preaching in the Twenty-first Century. A communications revolution is sweeping through the churches leaving some on fire and others burned out. This work shows what makes the difference for church leaders and communities who are using new media to advance Christian preaching. Join them by recovering the great tradition and expanding it through creative use encouraged by artists and filmmakers as well as preachers and professors. This work explores ways to maximize the promise of preaching and confront the perils leading to the renewal of church and society. Beginning with review of the situation today, we proceed step by step through the preparation and presentation of the sermon leading to transformation. The sermon in the local parish is seen as the microcosm of the macrocosm that is the communication of God's good news. "Rooted in a knowledge of and respect for traditional worship, David Randolph accurately assesses the difficulty facing mainline traditions in speaking to today's visual culture. But he doesn't stop there. He eloquently outlines a course of action that gives emphasis to the visual and, in particular, to the use of what he terms `new media.' Renewal of Preaching is a must read, not only as a text for those preparing for ministry, but also for long-time pastors seeking new ways of speaking to today's generation."---Joan Brix Carter Dean of College of Art and Design, Olivet University

Book excerpt: Amidst the confusion and doubt that the contemporary world casts on our Christian witness, a return to the Gospel brings clarity and a sure foundation. In the Gospel of Luke we find a model for the Church, a model equally valid for each generation. Well known for his teaching and preaching skills, Ivan Clutterbuck invites us to study the Gospel of Luke as a whole. Working through the text from start to finish we understand the full implications of how Jesus preached and organised his kingdom. In this Gospel guide we are provided with the latest balanced scholarship on Luke's writing in an accessible form. The last thirty years have seen a new concentration on the historical person of Jesus that has overturned much of the speculative biblical criticism of the past that seemed to undermine faith itself. Only by concentrating on the teaching and ministry of Jesus, so clearly set out by Luke, do we find the bedrock of the Christian message. Ivan Clutterbuck has been a priest of the Church of England for over sixty years. He has served both as an army and naval chaplain and has taught in several public schools. From 1966-74 he was Organising Secretary of the Church Union.
