This book explores paintings and sculptures of the Virgin Mary and the communities that produced them over several centuries. It argues for the emergence of distinctly Chinese Catholic identities as artistic representations of the Virgin Mary, at different times and in different places, absorbed and in turn influenced representations of Chinese figures from Guanyin to the Empress Dowager. At other times indigenous styles have been diluted by Western influences—following the influx of European missionaries in the nineteenth century, for example, or with globalization in recent years. The book engages with history, theology and art, and draws on imagery and archival photographs that have been largely neglected. As a study of the social and cultural histories of communities that have survived over many centuries, this book offers a new view of Catholicism in China—one that sees its history as more than simply a cycle of persecution and resistance. Focusing on the concepts of friendship and hospitality as they were both theorized and practiced by the Jesuit missionaries and their Confucian hosts, this book offers a new, comparative, and deconstructive reading of the interaction between these two vastly different cultures. Dongfeng Xu analyzes how the Jesuits presented their concept of friendship to achieve their evangelical goals and how the Confucians reacted in turn by either displaying or denying hospitality. Challenging the hierarchical view in traditional discourse on friendship and hospitality by revealing the irreducible otherness as the condition of possibility of the two concepts, Xu argues that one legacy of the Jesuit-Confucian encounter has been the shared recognition that cultural differences are what both motivated and conditioned cross-cultural exchanges and understandings.

This project draws on the work of La Civiltà Cattolica, which intends to be a journal of serious and attentive reflection. China is the land of a very ancient and complex civilization. This volume is intended only as an introduction to this complexity, considering in particular its relationship with Christianity. There are six contributions on China. The first starts from the fact that Christian Churches throughout the world have become aware that the 21st century is truly the Asian Century. At the same time, the vitality and inventiveness shown by Asian Christian communities is increasingly recognized. Asian theologians have tried to summarize the nature of the experiences lived by their people in a “theology of harmony,” which has developed its principles and characteristics over the past three or four decades. Our reflection seeks to describe the context, style and specific topics of this theology, taking into account its internal differentiations and illustrating the influence it may have progressively on ecclesial, theological and spiritual developments within and beyond Asia. The next essay looks at the enormous social, economic and political transformations that have taken place in China in recent decades. Finally, we deal with the future of inter-religious dialogue in Asia. Looking back, our reflection shows how questions of religious terminology have been disruptive. Concerning Japan we present a broad reflection on the word “mission,” which is often used today for any kind of pioneering project or new activities that see humanity enter a new phase of history, such as sending men to the moon or to other destinations in the cosmos.

The mystery behind the four-hundred-year gap is not a why question but instead involves many how questions—primarily, how did communication of the Bible take place in the Chinese context without a written text in the Chinese language? This book uncovers narrative forms of biblical stories and explores the ways they were delivered to Chinese audiences. Relying on textual evidence, it presents a diversified exploration of a specific biblical story from the Latin Vulgate Bible—the footwashing in John 13—and its translation into various Chinese texts. In different religious milieus, the biblical narrative provided Chinese audiences a core source of faith, connected them with the most commonly accepted beliefs, and fostered their religiosity across communities in China from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. The interdisciplinary approach adopted herein sheds new light on the history of the Bible in China and paves the way for further studies on the abundance of Chinese biblical stories and texts.
