Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching Bondage introduces and investigates the novel concept of doulology, the discourse of slavery, in the homilies of John Chrysostom, the late fourth-century priest and bishop. Chris L. de Wet examines the dynamics of enslavement in ChrysostomÕs theology, virtue ethics, and biblical interpretation and shows that human bondage as a metaphorical and theological construct had a profound effect on the lives of institutional slaves. The highly corporeal and gendered discourse associated with slavery was necessarily central in ChrysostomÕs discussions of the household, property, education, discipline, and sexuality. De Wet explores the impact of doulology in these contexts and disseminates the results in a new and highly anticipated language, bringing to light the more pervasive fissures between ancient Roman slaveholding and early Christianity. The corpus of ChrysostomÕs public addresses provides much of the literary evidence for slavery in the fourth century, and De WetÕs convincing analysis is a groundbreaking contribution to studies of the social world in late antiquity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching is the commission given by the great preacher Jesus Christ. It is urgent because it communicates the essential gospel meant for the salvation of the perishing humanity. God is universal and people are local. The universal God became local in Jesus Christ through his incarnation. The saving gospel of Jesus Christ is necessary to communicate contextually. The majority of Indian Christians come from Dalit background. The ongoing development of Dalit Theology is helping to make the gospel relevant and effective. But the homiletic methodology being adapted in the Indian context is mostly from the West. In this scenario, Preaching Contextually searches for relevant methodology for Indian Dalits. For this purpose, contents of some sample sermons were analyzed homiletically to assess its relevance and to present a feasible method as a Dalit Homiletic. Prof Dr Júlio Cézar Adam (Brazil) This is a book which contributes enormously to homiletic research and science, not only in the Indian context, but also for other contexts, mainly those permeated by social ills and injustices. It is a necessary book for those who study and do homiletics mainly in the context of vulnerability.

Download or read book The Yoke of Bondage written by Jimmy Swaggart and published by Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. This book was released on 2018 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under Holy Spirit conviction, the sinner knows that he needs a Saviour, so he turns to the cross and puts his faith in Jesus Christ. Yet, when that new convert fails the Lord and sins—as all Christians do—he sets out on his own to make sure that sin doesn’t happen again. He works to follow rules and regiments that he believes will win him victory over the world, the flesh, and the Devil, but instead he loses again and again. So, what must the believer do to triumph? In this extraordinary book, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart answers this question and explains why believers must keep their faith in the cross of Christ not only for salvation, but also for sanctification. Readers will learn how faith moved from the finished work of Christ summons believers to the never-ending bondage that law of any kind requires.

Book The Narrative Shape of Emotion in the Preaching of John Chrysostom

Download or read book The Narrative Shape of Emotion in the Preaching of John Chrysostom written by Blake Leyerle and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Chrysostom remains, along with Augustine, one of the most prolific witnesses to the world of late antiquity. As priest of Antioch and bishop of Constantinople, he earned his reputation as an extraordinary preacher. In this first unified study of emotions in Chrysostom’s writings, Blake Leyerle examines the fourth-century preacher’s understanding of anger, grief, and fear. These difficult emotions, she argues, were central to Chrysostom’s program of ethical formation and were taught primarily through narrative means. In recounting the tales of scripture, Chrysostom consistently draws attention to the emotional tenor of these stories, highlighting biblical characters’ moods, discussing their rational underpinnings, and tracing the outcomes of their reactions. By showing how assiduously Chrysostom aimed not only to allay but also to arouse strong feelings in his audiences to combat humanity’s indifference and to inculcate zeal, Leyerle provides a fascinating portrait of late antiquity’s foremost preacher.

Book Preaching Parables to Postmoderns

Download or read book Preaching Parables to Postmoderns written by Brian Stiller and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preachers, in their call to preach the Scriptures, are not only charged with the responsibility of speaking its truth but of speaking in such a way that people of this age and culture understand. To do this, the preacher builds a bridge between todays people and the gospel of both testaments. For some, this task is more difficult than for others. Preaching to those living in an inner-city housing project is far removed from an outpost mission in the two-thirds world. Each community has its own way of thinking and attaches different values to symbols of its own making. For those called preach to a generation raised on MTV and late-night comedians or those rooted in various economic culturesfrom governmentsponsored jobs overseen by union bosses to entrepreneurial dot-com companiesor generations stretching from high school students to "freedom fifty-fivers," the task is enormous. When one adds to that the complexity of a radical shift in underlying intellectual and cultural assumptions, the task of preaching becomes even more complicated.

Book A Legacy of Preaching Volume One Apostles to the Revivalists

Download or read book A Legacy of Preaching Volume One Apostles to the Revivalists written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Legacy of Preaching, Volume One--Apostles to the Revivalists explores the history and development of preaching through a biographical and theological examination of its most important preachers. Instead of teaching the history of preaching from the perspective of movements and eras, each contributor tells the story of a particular preacher in history, allowing the preachers from the past to come alive and instruct us through their lives, theologies, and methods of preaching. Each chapter introduces readers to a key figure in the history of preaching, followed by an analysis of the theological views that shaped their preaching, their methodology of sermon preparation and delivery, and an appraisal of the significant contributions they have made to the history of preaching. This diverse collection of familiar and lesser-known individuals provides a detailed and fascinating look at what it has meant to communicate the gospel over the past two thousand years. By looking at how the gospel has been communicated over time and across different cultures, pastors, scholars, and homiletics students can enrich their own understanding and practice of preaching for application today. Volume One covers the period from the apostles to the revivalists and profiles thirty preachers including: Paul by Eric Rowe Peter by David R. Beck Melito of Sardis by Paul A.
