Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparing to Preach This volume is not intended as a comprehensive treat ment of the subject of homiletics, and much is necessarily omitted which should be considered by those who are preparing to preach. I have endeavored, however, to cover the ground which is traversed in the preparation and delivery of the ordinary sermon - the staple of the preacher' s pulpit work. I have profited by certain criticisms which intelligent Christian laymen sometimes pass upon the methods and manners of certain preachers and have included some sug gestions which are generally omitted from similar publi cations, such as those which will be found under The Attack Upon the Text, Pulpit Manners, and elsewhere. It is my sincere prayer that the book may be helpful to my brethren in the ministry, especially to those for whose sake it has been more particularly prepared, as indicated in the title. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preaching and Hearing: And Other Sermons In one word, then, by the Gospel is meant Christ's method of saving men from sin; which consists in making them members of the king dom of God, where they no longer act under the instigation of selfishness, but are invariably guided by the law of brotherhood. And this method of salvation was once and for ever, by Christ Himself, summarised and embodied in the Simple but all-comprehensive maxim, Love one another. Now you may not like this Gospel. You may not think much of it as a method of salvation. But if you say it is not the Gospel of Christ, you virtually maintain that the writers of the New Testament have given us, either wittingly or unwittingly, an erroneous version of His teach ing. If they did so wittingly, they were dishonest; if unwittingly, they were stupid. Unless, there fore, you are prepared to deny to the evangelists, I will not say inspiration, but even common intelligence and common honesty, you must admit that Christ did reduce sin to selfishness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preaching Christ: Sermons At my request, Dr. Henry Preserved Smith has prepared this sketch of my husband's life, and arranged the sermons for the press. There was especial fitness in this, because Dr. Smith was for three years the pupil of Dr. Evans, and the tie which binds the earnest student to the inspiring instructor early became very strong. The friendship thus begun, was strengthened by nineteen years of affectionate intercourse as members of the same Faculty of instruction. Their kindred pursuits - both being students of the Scriptures - drew them more nearly together, and in their studies they developed similar views on the points of theology, so much debated in late years. They stood side by side in defending the rights of scholarly investigation of the Book they both loved, and their common experiences at this time made them esteem each other all the more, and increased their affection as it increased their intimacy. I wish here to express my thanks to Dr. Smith for the manner in which he has discharged his sacred duty, and to those who assisted him in the preparation of the volume. In accordance with my desire, the sermons are reproduced just as they were delivered, and as they are contained in the manuscripts. Had my husband lived to see them through the press, he might have made changes or corrections. This fact should be borne in mind in case any reader discovers what seems to him faulty in arrangement or punctuation. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apostolic Test of the Preaching Which God Has Ordained: A Sermon, at the Ordination of Mr. Henry Fairbanks, and Mr. Henry A. Hazen, at St. Johnsbury, Vt., Feb. 17, 1858 Of: intellectual culture, no increase of light from the works of nature, no illumination of the nat ural understanding, even from the letter of a super natural revelation, will avail to bring him to the knowledge Of God. Increase the light from all these sources a thousand fold, and his wisdom will pervert and reject it, or at least resist it. Work miracles before his eyes, and he will sooner ascribe them to some undeveloped force in nature, than cordially accept the Being who is above nature. Reveal truth with all the self-evidencing power that can accompany it, and it has no evidence to a mind blinded by its own wisdom. The world will not know God so long as it can prevent it; and it can prevent it, so long as intelligence is the only Obstacle. Book Christ s Trumpet Call to the Ministry

Download or read book Christ s Trumpet Call to the Ministry written by Daniel S. Gregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Trumpet-Call to the Ministry: Or the Preacher and the Preaching for the Present Crisis The following pages embody the thoughts and reasoned convictions of the writer on a subject that has been prominently before his mind during much of the last thirty years of a somewhat active life. They lie along the line of a belief which he shares in common with many other Christians, that the Church of Christ has come to the great crisis in her history and work - a crisis big either with unspeakable disaster and misery for all the future, or with decisive victory and the conquest of the world for Christ. They are presented with the profound - almost overwhelming - conviction that the questions discussed are, for the ministry and the Church, life-and-death questions that every preacher of the Gospel should, for the glory of the Master and for the sake of a lost world, take up, consider carefully, and settle in the light of the Word of God, without an hour's delay. They have been expressed in the popular and practical form that permits the repetition and even reiteration of important facts and principles that require emphasis by presentation in various aspects and relations. They are addressed especially to preachers of the Gospel, for the reason that upon the preacher as leader in the work of the Church, more than upon all else, will depend the final result. Book The Duty and the Discipline of Extemporary Preaching Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duty and the Discipline of Extemporary Preaching I take this opportunity to say that in the Notes and Studies of Sermons, which form the latter part of the volume, I had but one object in view - that of illustrating in some particulars my previous remarks on Preaching. In selecting the Sermons that seemed suitable for this purpose from those I preached during the time I was engaged in writing the first part of the book, I passed by all that were of a purely doctrinal character, because I shrank from dissecting, and from regarding, in a rhetorical light, the treatment of the most sacred of all subjects. Many are asking how the efficiency of the Church may be so increased as to enable her to meet the peculiar and pressing difficulties of the times. No one would think of limiting the reply to any single measure, or recommendation. The following pages endeavor to direct attention to what I would beg per mission to call a more instructed, and if so, then a more fruitful use of the oldest and most necessary of all the means that have been committed to the Church for enabling her to propagate the Faith. Book Practical Preaching for Priests and People

Download or read book Practical Preaching for Priests and People written by Bernard W. Kelly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Preaching for Priests and People: Twenty-Five Short Sermons on Doctrinal and Historical Subjects With a Synopsis of Each Sermon The importance of this state of future being forms no portion of the present discourse. We know that for the spiritual part of our existence the whole work of the redemption was undertaken, and upon its eternal welfare is the entire energy of the Church expended. In all his troubles and afflictions the religious man consoles himself with the same con viction that lightened the trials of holy Job, and made even the pagan Roman poet cry out though for a different reason N on omnis moriar I shall not wholly die. But, however firm may be our belief in immortality, we must never forget that outside the domain of faith there exists, and has ever existed, a widespread area of doubt, and even negation, where the truths which we regard as the commonplaces of belief are looked Upon as nothing better than illusions and chimeras. The opposition which in the early ages spent itself in attacking the divinity of Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Preacher, Vol. 2: A Book of Twenty-One Sermons Including six printed and published debates, in which he conducted one side, a dozen small volumes of about one hundred pages each, with more than thirty volumes of periodicals, and the two volumes of sermons, the writer of the following discourses has given the public some fifty volumes. These have all been pretty widely circulated in this country, and some of them in other countries. The writer has also traveled into more than half these States, besides visiting Upper Canada five times, and Lower Canada once, and been known as a preacher of the gospel more than forty years. He has never been a mere nominal preacher, nor a Sunday preacher; though for a few years stationed to preach in one place. A large portion of the time he has preached almost every day, and much of the time day and night, and in the meantime keeping up his writing, which will account for the seeming carelessness in a literary point of view, as also the fact that he only occasionally had the opportunity to read his own proof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Preaching: Plans and Methods A famous teacher of Homiletics in an American school used to tell his students a generation ago that the one kind of preaching which always wore was the Expository. The experience of his stu dents, now honored and wise leaders of their own generations, has many times confirmed this. It is not pulpit eloquence no matter how brilliant, nor topical preaching no matter how timely, wise, varied, or epigrammatic, which best resists the wear and tear of time in a long pastorate with its steady and unceasing demand for sermons, week in, week out, which feed and nourish and inspire the flock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Preaching We have not had for thirty years a series of Lyman Beecher Lectures dealing directly with the technique of preaching. It has seemed fitting therefore that as a teacher of homiletics and as one whose main office for many years has been that of preaching, I should take up in a more intimate way the making of a sermon. Book Preaching and Sermon Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Preaching and Sermon Construction Classic Reprint written by Paul B. Bull and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preaching and Sermon Construction These notes on Preaching and Sermon Construction are an expansion of some lectures given to the students at Lichfield Theological College and to a School for Clergy. I could not have brought myself to publish them if it had not been for the encouragement and persistent persuasion of Prebendary L. A. Phillips, the Principal, and the students of that College, to whom I offer this expansion in gratitude for their kind appreciation, which has conquered my hesitation. I suppose one's reluctance to publish anything on the subject springs chiefly from two facts: firstly, that a preacher has to cover such a wide range of subjects in following his calling that he can bring nothing to perfection, and therefore he has to publish studies which he knows are not yet complete or exhaustive; and, secondly, no preacher who is sincere can escape from the painful realization that the expression of his ideal is the confession of his failure. In nearly every word he condemns himself. But some such help as is attempted in this book seemed to be needed. Many brilliant and learned preachers have lectured on the Principles of Preaching. But few have come to the aid of the young parish priest in facing this most difficult part of his ministry, the actual construction of a sermon. Undoubtedly many young clergy suffer much in their first efforts to construct a sermon, simply because no one has taught them the few rules which govern the technique of this art. In cases where a preacher is so strong in self-confidence that he does not suffer at all, the suffering is generally borne by the congregation. It is in the hope of relieving such suffering in either case that I offer to young preachers a summary of that part of my experience which I may be able to communicate to others after thirty-four years' labor in this ministry.
