Book Pre teen Students Perceptions of Dating and Teen Dating Violence

Download or read book Pre teen Students Perceptions of Dating and Teen Dating Violence written by Jennifer Lea Benford and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teen dating violence is prevalent, and as youth continue to access technology more frequently and at an earlier age, adolescents become increasingly vulnerable to consequences associated with dating violence. The purpose of this study is to examine pre-teen students' perceptions of teen dating violence and digital violence, and their experiences of pressures to date. Using a qualitative study design and constant comparative thematic analysis, the study revealed two overarching constructs as well as 13 themes. First, pre-teen students exhibited ambivalence towards dating. Second, pre-teen students in this sample perceived dating as taboo. The 13 themes identified in the study were: (a) too young to date, (b) dating is frowned upon, (c) some are ok with it and some are not, (d) dating but not really dating, (e) secrets, (f) definitions of dating, (g) guidelines for dating, (h) good dating behaviors, (i) reasons to date, (j) pressures within dating, (k) trust and mistrust, (l) dating conflict, and (m) bystander helper. Findings from this study suggest there may be a pre-dating stage in the developmental trajectory, which by definition precedes dating, but captures some attitudes and behaviors that are linked to ideas of dating. Implications and recommendations for policy, intervention, and further research are discussed.

Book College Students Perceptions of Adolescent Dating Violence

Download or read book College Students Perceptions of Adolescent Dating Violence written by Kimberly Ann Larsen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine college students' perceptions toward adolescent dating violence. The objective is to determine whether there were any statistically significant differences in knowledge and experience among criminology and criminal justice majors and non-criminology and criminal justice majors. Surveys were administered to 100 college students to measure knowledge and experience of adolescent dating violence. Survey responses of students who identified themselves as criminology and criminal justice majors were compared to responses of those students who did not consider themselves criminology and criminal justice majors. While there were some statistically significant differences between the two groups with regards to both knowledge and experience, there were not as many differences as the author hypothesized. The findings of this study demonstrate shortcomings in both policy and education in both adolescent dating violence prevention and education.

Book Programs to Reduce Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault

Download or read book Programs to Reduce Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault written by Arlene N. Weisz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arlene Weisz and Beverly Black interview practitioners from more than fifty dating violence and sexual assault programs across the United States to provide a unique resource for effective teen dating violence prevention. Enhancing existing research with the shared wisdom of the nation's prevention community, Weisz and Black describe program goals and content, recruitment strategies, membership, structure, and community involvement in practitioners' own words. Their comprehensive approach reveals the core techniques that should be a part of any successful prevention program, including theoretical consistency, which contributes to sound content development, and peer education and youth leadership, which empower participants and keep programs relevant. Weisz and Black show that multisession programs are most useful in preventing violence and assault, because they enable participants to learn new behaviors and change entrenched attitudes. Combining single- and mixed-gender sessions, as well as steering discussions away from the assignment of blame, also yield positive results. The authors demonstrate that productive education remains sensitive to differences in culture and sexual orientation and includes experiential exercises and role-playing. Manuals help in guiding educators and improving evaluation, but they should also allow adolescents to direct the discussion. Good programs regularly address teachers and parents. Ultimately, though, Weisz and Black find that the ideal program retains prevention educators long after the apprentice stage, encouraging self-evaluation and new interventions based on the wisdom that experience brings.

Book School Social Workers Perceptions of Teen Dating Violence in Their Schools and Their Previous Training Experience

Download or read book School Social Workers Perceptions of Teen Dating Violence in Their Schools and Their Previous Training Experience written by Shannon MacLaren and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a pervasive and dangerous issue among adolescents that can have negative long-lasting impacts. Despite this, TDV is an issue that is often overlooked in our school systems, where many adolescents spend most of their time. The purpose of this research project was to explore how TDV is being addressed in a school setting by school social workers. This study surveyed professional school social workers (N=94) across the country to determine their previous training experiences with teen dating violence, their knowledge and perception of this issue, and their insight to addressing TDV within their schools. The hypothesis was that the majority of school social workers have not received an adequate amount of training in their careers and that the issue of teen dating violence is not being given effective attention within schools. After running a number of tests, including descriptive and multivariate linear regression analysis, results were found to support these hypotheses.

Book Teen Dating Violence

Download or read book Teen Dating Violence written by Rochelle L.. Rowley and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the research on teen dating violence has attempted to take the ideas associated with adult domestic violence and intimate partner violence and apply it to teen relationships. This research was conducted to discover the underlying dimensions of teen relationships and the violence that exists in these relationships in order to provide a conceptual idea of who should be targeted, with what information, and at what age with prevention efforts aimed at reducing teen dating violence. Wichita Kansas has implemented a variety of prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of teen dating violence in the community for almost a decade. Participants in this study were recruited from 6th through 10th graders who were scheduled to receive intervention curriculum in their schools. Several items from the General Youth Relationship Survey-Student Version (Hertzog, Matson, & Rowley) were analyzed using factor analysis to discover the underlying dimensions of teen dating violence. Physical/emotional abuse, monitoring and controlling behaviors, and relational entitlements were the key dimensions gleaned from this analysis. An examination of the factor score means with several student characteristics were also analyzed. Girls were found to witness more teen dating violence in their friend's relationships as well as hold more agreement with relational entitlements than boys. African American teens were more likely to report witnessing teen dating violence than Hispanic or white teens; however, Hispanic teens were more likely to report that a person has certain relational entitlements over their partner. This study also found that, in order to provide actual prevention, efforts should be targeted towards late elementary to early middle school-aged students.
