Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2 written by Robert Black and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, Ingrid de Zwarte examines the causes and demographic impact of the Dutch 'Hunger Winter' that occurred in the Netherlands during the final months of German occupation in the Second World War. She offers a comprehensive and multifaceted view of the socio-political context in which the famine emerged and considers how the famine was confronted at different societal levels, including the responses by Dutch, German and Allied state institutions, affected households, and local communities. Contrary to highly-politicized assumptions, she argues that the famine resulted from a culmination of multiple transportation and distribution difficulties. Although Allied relief was postponed for many crucial months and official rations fell far below subsistence level, successful community efforts to fight the famine conditions emerged throughout the country. She also explains why German authorities found reasons to cooperate and allow relief for the starving Dutch. With these explorations, The Hunger Winter offers a radically new understanding of the Dutch famine and provides a valuable insight into the strategies and coping mechanisms of a modern society facing catastrophe.

Book Child Health in the Netherlands

Download or read book Child Health in the Netherlands written by R. A. Hirasing and published by Tno Prevention and Health. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents information on the current health status of children and adolescents in the Netherlands. Chapter 1 discusses demographic factors, including population trends and life expectancy. Chapter 2 focuses on children's health status, reporting on child mortality rates, abortion, birth rate, family planning, perinatal health problems, congenital anomalies, accidents at or around the home, traffic accidents, chronic conditions and handicaps, asthma, diabetes mellitus, vision, hearing, developmental problems, mental deficiency, and mental health. Chapter 3 presents information on lifestyle influences on children's health, including breastfeeding, dental health, leisure time, cigarette smoking, alcohol, drugs, and teenage sexuality. Chapter 4 discusses aspects of the Netherlands' health care system, including access to health care, organization, financing, obstetrical care, maternity home help, preventive child health care, preschool and school health care, vaccinations, general practitioner consultation rates, specialist service use, and hospital admissions. Chapter 5 focuses on social welfare and discusses pregnancy leave, breastfeeding at work, parental leave, child benefit, day care for children, youth welfare work, and youth care. Chapter 6 discusses education, focusing on play groups, compulsory education, and schools for special education. Chapter 7 presents information on children at risk, including preterm children, ethnic minorities, children of refugees, adopted children, child abuse, and school dropouts. The report concludes by noting that children in the Netherlands enjoy a better state of health than their predecessors a generation ago. However, more attention needs to be paid to problems associated with smoking, drinking, and drug abuse, living environment, accident prevention, lack of exercise/sport, and mistaken nutritional habits. Book The Decline of Infant and Child Mortality

Download or read book The Decline of Infant and Child Mortality written by Carlo A. Corsini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many changes that have taken place in Western society during the past two centuries, few have been more significant than the steep fall in infant and child mortality. However, the timing and causes of the decline are still poorly understood. While some scholars attribute it to general improvements in living standards, others emphasize the role of social intervention and public health reforms. Written by specialists from several disciplinary fields, the twelve essays in this book break entirely new ground by providing a long-term perspective that challenges some deep-rooted ideas about the European experience of mortality decline and may help explain the forces and causal relationships behind the still tragic incidence of preventable infant and child deaths in many parts of the world today. This book will become a standard work for students and researchers in demography, social and economic history, population geography, and the history of medicine, and it will be of interest to anyone concerned with current debates on the policies to be adopted to curb infant and child mortality in both developed and developing countries.
