Book Application of Ground Penetrating Radar and Infrared Thermography to Pavement Evaluation

Download or read book Application of Ground Penetrating Radar and Infrared Thermography to Pavement Evaluation written by RA. Eckrose and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies have enabled the pavement engineer to develop a better picture of the pavement structure. Two of these new technologies are ground-penetrating radar and infrared thermography. Each of these techniques allows the pavement engineer to nondestructively evaluate subsurface defects within and under the pavement. Infrared thermography is now widely used to determine the location of delaminations within the pavement.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar Sensitivity to Marginal Changes in Asphalt Mixture Composition

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar Sensitivity to Marginal Changes in Asphalt Mixture Composition written by Eyoab Zegeye Teshale and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is gaining renewed attention from many state highway agencies because of its promising application prospects for rapid, full-coverage, continuous, and nondestructive measurements of the density in newly constructed asphalt pavements. However, several operational and technical issues need to be addressed before this technology can be efficiently deployed for quality control/quality assurance practices. The operation-related challenges are relatively easily addressed with proper project-specific management practices. The technical ones, on the other hand, require improvements to the testing devices and procedures and strategic investigations for further understanding of the relationship between the GPR-measured dielectrics and the density of asphalt mixtures. The latter is particularly crucial given the production and construction variability of asphalt mixtures and the accepted practices of field adjustments to mix designs. This study investigated the sensitivity of dielectric measurements to changes in mix composition and assessed the appropriateness (or lack thereof) of using a single dielectric-density transfer model to analyze field data measured on multiple production days. The study examined asphalt mixtures designed and manufactured in the laboratory with varying amounts of limestone, a high-dielectric aggregate source, as well as plant-produced asphalt mixtures collected on multiple production days. The findings indicated that the source/composition of the aggregate structure affected density-dielectric relationships of asphalt mixtures considerably. On the contrary, the relationship appeared to be less sensitive to normal asphalt production variability (day to day variations) as long as the aggregate source proportions were maintained intact. The experimental investigation proposed in this study can be easily employed to determine the proper amount of calibration models or the extent of allowable adjustment to the mix design for asphalt pavement construction projects.

Book Civil Engineering Applications of Ground Penetrating Radar

Download or read book Civil Engineering Applications of Ground Penetrating Radar written by Andrea Benedetto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on Transport and Urban Development COST Action TU1208, presents the most advanced applications of ground penetrating radar (GPR) in a civil engineering context, with documentation of instrumentation, methods and results. It explains clearly how GPR can be employed for the surveying of critical transport infrastructure, such as roads, pavements, bridges and tunnels and for the sensing and mapping of underground utilities and voids. Detailed attention is also devoted to use of GPR in the inspection of geological structures and of construction materials and structures, including reinforced concrete, steel reinforcing bars and pre/post-tensioned stressing ducts. Advanced methods for solution of electromagnetic scattering problems and new data processing techniques are also presented. Readers will come to appreciate that GPR is a safe, advanced, non destructive and noninvasive imaging technique that can be effectively used for the inspection of composite structures and the performance of diagnostics relevant to the entire life cycle of civil engineering works.

Book Infrared Thermography Recent Advances and Future Trends

Download or read book Infrared Thermography Recent Advances and Future Trends written by Carosena Meola and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-contact, non-invasive methodology which allows for detection of thermal energy that is radiated from objects in the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum, for conversion of such energy into a visible image (such as a surface temperature map). This feature represents a great potential to be exploited in a vast variety of fields from aerospace to civil engineering, to medicine, to agriculture, etc. However, IRT is still not adequately enclosed in industrial instrumentation and there are still potential users who might benefit from the use of such a technique and who are not aware of their existence. This e-book conveys information about basic IRT theory, infrared detectors, signal digitalization and applications of infrared thermography in many fields such as medicine, foodstuff conservation, fluid-dynamics, architecture, anthropology, condition monitoring, non destructive testing and evaluation of materials and structures. The volume promotes an exchange of information between the academic world and industry, and shares methodologies which were independently developed and applied in specific disciplines.

Book Development and Validation of Performance Prediction Models and Specifications for Asphalt Binders and Paving Mixes

Download or read book Development and Validation of Performance Prediction Models and Specifications for Asphalt Binders and Paving Mixes written by Robert L. Lytton and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1993 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A result of the Strategic Highway Research Program's asphalt research is the development of performance-based specifications for asphalt binders and mixtures to control 3 distress modes: rutting; fatigue cracking; and thermal cracking. The SHRP A-005 project developed detailed pavement performance models to support these binder and mixture specifications and performance-based mixture designs. This report documents the findings of this extensive research effort and provides supporting data for the performance-based specifications and mixture design procedure called SUPERPAVE. The A-005 contract developed and used a sophisticated, mechanistic-based pavement performance model to define the relationships between asphalt binder and mixture properties and pavement distress. A comprehensive pavement performance model was developed that predicts the amount of fatigue cracking, thermal cracking and rutting in asphalt concrete pavements with time, using results from the accelerated laboratory tests. The pavement performance models for each distress were also used to confirm the relevant binder and mixture properties established by other SHRP contractors. The model has 3 parts: a mixture evaluation model; a pavement response model; and a pavement distress model.
