Book Prehistoric Copper Mining in Michigan

Download or read book Prehistoric Copper Mining in Michigan written by John R. Halsey and published by U OF M MUSEUM ANTHRO ARCHAEOLOGY. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isle Royale and the counties that line the northwest coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are called Copper Country because of the rich deposits of native copper there. In the nineteenth century, explorers and miners discovered evidence of prehistoric copper mining in this region. They used those “ancient diggings” as a guide to establishing their own, much larger mines, and in the process, destroyed the archaeological record left by the prehistoric miners. Using mining reports, newspaper accounts, personal letters, and other sources, this book reconstructs what these nineteenth-century discoverers found, how they interpreted the material remains of prehistoric activity, and what they did with the stone, wood, and copper tools they found at the prehistoric sites. “This volume represents an exhaustive compilation of the early written and published accounts of mines and mining in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It will prove a valuable resource to current and future scholars. Through these early historic accounts of prospectors and miners, Halsey provides a vivid picture of what once could be seen.” —John M. O’Shea, curator of Great Lakes Archaeology, University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology

Book This Land

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wayne N. May
  • Publisher : Hayriver Press
  • Release : 2012-06-18
  • ISBN : 0985503440
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book This Land written by Wayne N. May and published by Hayriver Press. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wayne May has done more work and research on the North American setting for the Book of Mormon than any single individual. The evidence he has compiled is overwhelming as a witness not only to the setting of this book of scripture, but also to the reality of the Book of Mormon as a historical record. Hugh Nibley remarked that ?...one may well ask what kind of remains the Nephites would leave us from their more virtuous days. A closer approximation to the Book of Mormon picture of Nephite culture is seen in the earth and palisade structures of the Hopewell and Adena culture areas than in the later stately piles of stone in Mesoamerica.? (Hugh Nibley, The Prophetic Book of Mormon [Salt Lake City and Provo: Deseret Book Co., Foundation of Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, 1989], 271.) The Hopewell culture, discussed in Wayne May?s, This Land, is the only civilization in the Western Hemisphere that corresponds directly, in time and space, to the events described in the Book of Mormon and the statements of the prophet and translator, Joseph?Smith. The evaporation of the Hopewell Culture has taken place as the expansion of the settlements and population centers have grown since the early 1800?s. The best preserved details, drawings, and explanations of this culture can only be found in the records of eyewitness accounts and those who were present during the many excavations undertaken before the twentieth century. In this fourth volume of This Land, Wayne has brought together the works of early scholars and archaeologists as well as contemporary authors that have been exploring these settlements, monuments, and mounds of North America in a way that should have been done decades ago. Any serious student of the Nephite record must read This Land before coming to any conclusion about the geographical setting of the Book of Mormon. The evidence contained in This Land stands as another witness and testimony of this important scripture.

Book The Ancient Giants Who Ruled America

Download or read book The Ancient Giants Who Ruled America written by Richard J. Dewhurst and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the substantial evidence for a former race of giants in North America and its 150-year suppression by the Smithsonian Institution • Shows how thousands of giant skeletons have been found, particularly in the Mississippi Valley, as well as the ruins of the giants’ cities • Explores 400 years of giant finds, including newspaper articles, first person accounts, state historical records, and illustrated field reports • Reveals the Stonehenge-era megalithic burial complex on Catalina Island with over 4,000 giant skeletons, including kings more than 9 feet tall • Includes more than 100 rare photographs and illustrations of the lost evidence Drawing on 400 years of newspaper articles and photos, first person accounts, state historical records, and illustrated field reports, Richard J. Dewhurst reveals not only that North America was once ruled by an advanced race of giants but also that the Smithsonian has been actively suppressing the physical evidence for nearly 150 years. He shows how thousands of giant skeletons have been unearthed at Mound Builder sites across the continent, only to disappear from the historical record. He examines other concealed giant discoveries, such as the giant mummies found in Spirit Cave, Nevada, wrapped in fine textiles and dating to 8000 BCE; the hundreds of red-haired bog mummies found at sinkhole “cenotes” on the west coast of Florida and dating to 7500 BCE; and the ruins of the giants’ cities with populations in excess of 100,000 in Arizona, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Louisiana. Dewhurst shows how this suppression began shortly after the Civil War and transformed into an outright cover-up in 1879 when Major John Wesley Powell was appointed Smithsonian director, launching a strict pro-evolution, pro-Manifest Destiny agenda. He also reveals the 1920s’ discovery on Catalina Island of a megalithic burial complex with 6,000 years of continuous burials and over 4,000 skeletons, including a succession of kings and queens, some more than 9 feet tall--the evidence for which is hidden in the restricted-access evidence rooms at the Smithsonian.
