Book Nutritional Coaching Strategy to Modulate Training Efficiency

Download or read book Nutritional Coaching Strategy to Modulate Training Efficiency written by K.D. Tipton and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regular training and adequate nutrition are key factors in modulating exercise performance: Optimal performance requires a healthy diet adapted to the specific demands of the individual athlete's training and competition. Research has shown an impact of dietary intervention on the modulation of the skeletal muscle adaptive response to prolonged exercise training. Proper nutritional coaching should therefore not be restricted to the competitive events, but needs to be applied throughout both training and competition, each with its specific requirements regarding nutrient provision. Proper nutritional counseling will thus improve exercise training efficiency and ultimately increase performance capacity. Moreover, dietary counseling to modulate training efficiency is also relevant to the general public and the more frail clinically compromised patient groups. This book provides a solid scientific basis to help the reader define key targets for future interventions and develop new insights into the complex interaction between nutrition and exercise.

Book Sports Nutrition

  • Author : Ron J. Maughan
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 3805596979
  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book Sports Nutrition written by Ron J. Maughan and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diet and athletic performance -- new aspects Diet significantly affects athletic performance, and adoption of a dietary strategy that meets an athlete's nutrition goals will maximize the possibility of competitive success. Over the years, the focus has shifted from a high intake of (animal) protein to the role of carbohydrate and water. Today, there is a growing recognition that the primary role of sports nutrition may be to promote the adaptations taking place in muscle and other tissues in response to the training stimulus. There is also much interest in the implications of manipulation of the fat and carbohydrate content of the diet. This publication contains the proceedings of the 69th Nestl Nutrition Institute Workshop held in Hawaii in October 2010. The aim of the workshop was to explore the effects of nutritional manipulations on the metabolic responses to acute and chronic exercise. Another goal was to further identify the possible role of these dietary interventions in promoting adaptive changes in muscle, adipose tissues and other potential sites of limitation to exercise performance. Papers cover the three macronutrients carbohydrate, fat and protein, plus an additional chapter on water, together with the accompanying discussions.

Book Exercise and Diabetes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sheri R. Colberg
  • Publisher : American Diabetes Association
  • Release : 2013-05-30
  • ISBN : 158040507X

Download or read book Exercise and Diabetes written by Sheri R. Colberg and published by American Diabetes Association. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical movement has a positive effect on physical fitness, morbidity, and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Although exercise has long been considered a cornerstone of diabetes management, many health care providers fail to prescribe it. In addition, many fitness professionals may be unaware of the complexities of including physical activity in the management of diabetes. Giving patients or clients a full exercise prescription that take other chronic conditions commonly accompanying diabetes into account may be too time-consuming for or beyond the expertise of many health care and fitness professionals. The purpose of this book is to cover the recommended types and quantities of physical activities that can and should be undertaken by all individuals with any type of diabetes, along with precautions related to medication use and diabetes-related health complications. Medications used to control diabetes should augment lifestyle improvements like increased daily physical activity rather than replace them. Up until now, professional books with exercise information and prescriptions were not timely or interactive enough to easily provide busy professionals with access to the latest recommendations for each unique patient. However, simply instructing patients to “exercise more” is frequently not motivating or informative enough to get them regularly or safely active. This book is changing all that with its up-to-date and easy-to-prescribe exercise and physical activity recommendations and relevant case studies. Read and learn to quickly prescribe effective and appropriate exercise to everyone.

Book The Hidden Mechanics of Exercise

Download or read book The Hidden Mechanics of Exercise written by Christopher M. Gillen and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As anyone who takes up a new sport quickly discovers, even basic athletic moves require high levels of coordination and control. Whether dribbling a basketball or hitting a backhand, limbs must be synchronized and bodies balanced, all with precise timing. But no matter how diligently we watch the pros or practice ourselves, the body’s inner workings remain invisible. The Hidden Mechanics of Exercise reveals the microworld of the human body in motion, from the motor proteins that produce force, to the signaling molecules that activate muscles, to the enzymes that extract energy from nutrients. Christopher Gillen describes how biomolecules such as myosin, collagen, hemoglobin, and creatine kinase power our athletic movements. During exercise, these molecules dynamically morph into different shapes, causing muscles, tendons, blood, and other tissues to perform their vital functions. Gillen explores a wide array of topics, from how genetic testing may soon help athletes train more effectively, to how physiological differences between women and men influence nutrition. The Hidden Mechanics of Exercise tackles questions athletes routinely ask. What should we ingest before and during a race? How does a hard workout trigger changes in our muscles? Why does exercise make us feel good? Athletes need not become biologists to race in a triathlon or carve turns on a snowboard. But Gillen, who has run ten ultramarathons, points out that athletes wishing to improve their performance will profit from a deeper understanding of the body’s molecular mechanisms.
