Book Pre clinical Testing of Real time Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission Devices

Download or read book Pre clinical Testing of Real time Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission Devices written by Victoria Wai-Chi Young and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) testing is a relatively quick, non-invasive, low-cost, and accurate method for assessing cochlear function in infants and young children. The use of current DPOAE devices, that process data through FFT and data-averaging techniques, are limited, in part, due to high ambient noise susceptibility, which lengthens testing time. A DPOAE device that acquires and processes DPOAE signals in real-time, through digital signal filtering, and is less susceptible to ambient noise was developed at the University of Toronto. Pilot studies on adult and child subjects conducted with real-time DPOAE devices at the Hospital for Sick Children indicate that overall testing times are faster for the real-time devices and the test results are comparable to the results from current data-averaging devices. The conclusion is that the real-time DPOAE devices are capable of reliably and accurately diagnosing cochlear function and is less susceptible to noise than data-averaging DPOAE devices.

Download or read book Hearing Loss written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-12-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

Book excerpt: A new edition of a best-selling text with a CD-ROM by Dr. David Kemp The new edition of the best-selling Otoacoustic Emissions: Clinical Applications provides a thorough review of the complex physiology of the ear and clinical applications of the latest research on otoacoustic emissions. The book features new chapters on such important topics as middle ear function enhanced by reflectance measurements and the use of otoacoustic emissions as a preclinical measure of susceptibility to hearing loss. Accompanying the book is a CD-ROM developed by Dr. David Kemp, Ph.D., which contains animations, movies, and interviews. The CD-ROM serves as an indispensable aid to both teaching and reviewing key concepts. From physiological phenomena to diagnostic and clinical applications, this book is a complete reference on otoacoustic emissions that will provide graduates in audiology and residents in otolaryngology and otology with all the essential information needed for research and professional practice.

Book Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities

Download or read book Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-31 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. To receive SSDI or SSI disability benefits, an individual must meet the statutory definition of disability, which is "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity [SGA] by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." SSA uses a five-step sequential process to determine whether an adult applicant meets this definition. Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities examines ways to collect information about an individual's physical and mental (cognitive and noncognitive) functional abilities relevant to work requirements. This report discusses the types of information that support findings of limitations in functional abilities relevant to work requirements, and provides findings and conclusions regarding the collection of information and assessment of functional abilities relevant to work requirements.
