Book SPORTS METRIC FORECASTING

Download or read book SPORTS METRIC FORECASTING written by William Mallios and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outcomes of major league games—winning/losing margins and total points scored relative to the odds makers’ lines in baseball, basketball and football—are graphed in terms of sports metric candlestick charts and then forecast in terms of adaptive drift modeling. The charts are constructed to reveal ad hoc forecasting patterns that may contribute to effective forecasting. These patterns are then included with variables contained in major sports data bases. The augmented data bases then provide input variables in the drift modeling forecasts.

Book Understanding Within Season Changes in Major League Baseball Attendance

Download or read book Understanding Within Season Changes in Major League Baseball Attendance written by Tanner Michael Koscinski and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major League Baseball teams play considerably more games per season than the teams in any of the other major professional sports leagues in the United States, providing baseball fans with a large selection of games and frequently resulting in large fluctuations in attendance. In addition to studying the effect of the home and visiting teams' season win percentages on attendance, this paper examines various shorter-term metrics of performance to see which recent performance metric has the most significant impact on a home team's game-to-game attendance numbers. The number of wins in a team's previous 10 home games is shown to be statistically significant and the best recent performance metric to estimate attendance; however, the attendance prediction benefits are not practically much better than a simpler model that ignores such recent performance. This paper also discusses how the magnitude of the variation in a team's attendance numbers can differ from team to team and from season to season and suggests using a team-season standardized attendance response variable to eliminate this difference in variance issue between low average / low variance, high average / high variance, and high average / low variance teams. The models with the team-season standardized response variable consistently outperform models with the traditional attendance response variable.

Book Behavioural Sports Economics

Download or read book Behavioural Sports Economics written by Hannah Josepha Rachel Altman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists have entered into the realm of sports to provide what they believe to be more cogent explanations for sport-related behaviour and to suggest ways in which incentives can improve sports outcomes. But prices and income, the traditional workhorses of conventional economics, can only provide partial explanations and understandings. Drawing on a bounded rationality approach to behavioural economics, this book demonstrates the analytical insights to be gained by supplementing the conventional economics toolbox with psychological, cognitive, sociological, and institutional factors. The international cast list of contributors cover a wide range of sports topics on which a behavioural approach can reveal new insights. These include preferences, managerial, efficiency, choking, doping, favouritism, athlete well- being, and spectator behaviour. Throughout the book, there is an emphasis on the cognitive limits to smart decision-making as well as the critical role played by the decision-making environment. This volume demonstrates that adopting a bounded rationality approach, complimented with other behaviouralist approaches, helps to better explain sport-related behavioural, sub-optimal behavioural, and market failures. It also provides insights that could be used to improve sports outcomes and the well-being of those involved in sports and to better configure policy to enhance sports performance. This groundbreaking book will be an indispensable reference to students and scholars of sports economics, sports management, and sports science.

Book Forecasting Batting Averages in MLB

Download or read book Forecasting Batting Averages in MLB written by Sarah Reid Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider new baseball data from Statcast which includes launch angle, launch velocity, and hit distance for batted balls in Major League Baseball during the 2015, and 2016 seasons. Using logistic regression, we train two models on 2015 data to get the probability that a player will get a hit on each of their 2015 at-bats. For each player we sum these predictions and divide by their total at bats to predict their 2016 batting average. We then use linear regression, which expresses 2016 actual batting averages as a linear combination of 2016 Statcast predictions and 2016 PECOTA predictions. When using this procedure to obtain 2017 predictions, we find that the combined prediction performs better than PECOTA. This information may be used to make better predictions of batting averages for future seasons.

Book Team Performance Market Characteristics and Attendance of Major League Baseball

Download or read book Team Performance Market Characteristics and Attendance of Major League Baseball written by David W. Pan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A panel data analysis procedure was used to differentiate the effects of selected team attributes and market characteristics on attendance in Major League Baseball in addition to that of winning percentage. An econometric model was established in the analysis to empirically project the attendance potential determined by these selected variables. The results suggested that: (a) size of county population was a significant predictor for attendance potential in the major metropolitan cities in addition to winning percentage; (b) demand to admission cost was inelastic, while demand to the cost of "sport extensions" products was elastic; (c) presence of a major professional sport team in the same market would decrease attendance potential in Major League Baseball; and (d) population growth in certain age groups could serve as a long-term predictor for the improvement of attendance ratio to the capacity of stadium. Other findings and their implications to attendance of Major League Baseball were also presented in this study.

Book Stadium Construction and Minor League Baseball Attendance

Download or read book Stadium Construction and Minor League Baseball Attendance written by Seth R. Gitter and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The established literature shows that new stadium construction for major league baseball (MLB) teams can increase attendance, but there are limited studies at the minor league level. We use a data set encompassing all A, AA, and AAA minor league baseball teams from 1992 to 2006 to estimate the impact of stadium construction on minor league attendance. This data set includes almost 200 teams, over half of which constructed a new stadium during the 15-year observation period. Over a 10-year period our results show that new stadiums increase attendance by 1.2 million fans at the AAA level, 0.4 million at the AA and high A level, and 0.2 million at short season low A. A cost benefit analysis suggests that increased ticket sales do not offset the stadium costs, in line with previous works on MLB.

Book The Effects of Changes in Major League Baseball Playoff Format

Download or read book The Effects of Changes in Major League Baseball Playoff Format written by Alexis Irion and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the effect on attendance of Major League Baseball (MLB) games as a result of the additional playoff round added by the MLB in 2012. Adding another round to the playoffs increases the number of teams qualifying for the playoffs from eight teams to ten teams. More teams towards the end of the season will be in the playoff race than prior to the 2012 season. It is hypothesized that with more teams having a playoff chance, an increase in attendance will result. Home game attendance is a major contributor to team revenue, thus the implications of an increase in attendance would positively impact many teams financially across the league.

Book Determinants of Ticket Price Fluctuation in the Secondary Market

Download or read book Determinants of Ticket Price Fluctuation in the Secondary Market written by Dongho Yoo and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each Major League Baseball (MLB) team has 81 home games in each season, and they are not 81 units of the same product but 81 different products. Fans value differently each of 81 home games, but what factors fans consider in this valuation have not been investigated much. Numerous studies have focused on factors that motivate fans to come to the game in general, but not many studies have focused on factors influencing game-by-game fluctuation within a season. The purpose of this study is to examine factors found from the previous literature influencing the secondary market ticket price fluctuation for individual MLB games. In this research, the author used the ticket prices of the secondary market as dependent variables. The secondary market is the platform for buying and selling tickets that previously were obtained from the franchise team (the primary market). The ticket prices of the primary market are relatively constant throughout the season, but the ticket prices of the secondary market radically fluctuate according to fans' willingness to pay for games. Therefore, the secondary market can be a good indicator reflecting fans' perceived value fluctuation game by game. After the factors were found from the literature, they were statistically analyzed through regression analysis to see if they had a significant effect on the ticket price fluctuations. Additionally, MLB teams were divided into three groups by teams' attendance level. The author investigated how the level of teams' popularity influences fans' preference.

Download or read book Demand For Offense written by Alexander Cardazzi and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2022, Major League Baseball changed its rules to include the designated hitter position in both the American and National Leagues. Up until that year, designated hitters were only used by American League teams. This rule change creates an environment where half of a major sports league is given a shock to offensive production. We analyze the demand for offense by investigating how the designated hitter affects attendance and offensive production for National League teams. Our results contribute to a rich literature that analyzes how offense affects fan participation, as we provide the first evidence using causal inference that offense increases fan attendance. Using a difference-in-differences framework, we show that the offense created by a designated hitter increases attendance by about 3.5-7.9% at National League home games as a result of the rule change. Given a point estimate increase in total offense of about 4.85%, we find evidence that attendance is likely elastic with respect to total offense.
