But Tony’s rising career as a pharmaceutical salesman demands more and more of his time. With a nice home in the suburbs and a lovely young daughter, they appear to have it all—yet they can’t seem to spend time together without fighting. Hoping for a new listing, Elizabeth visits the home of Clara Williams, an elderly widow, and is both amused and uncomfortable when Clara starts asking pointed questions about her marriage and faith. But it’s Clara’s secret prayer room, with its walls covered in requests and answers, that has Elizabeth most intrigued . . . even if she’s not ready to take Clara’s suggestion that she create a prayer room of her own. As tensions at home escalate, though, Elizabeth begins to realize that her family is worth fighting for, and she can’t win this battle on her own. Stepping out in blind faith, putting her prayers for her family and their future in God’s hands, might be her only chance at regaining the life she was meant for.
Download or read book A Praying Life written by Paul E. Miller and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 300,000 copies sold "This book will be like having the breath of God at your back. Let it lift you to new hope." --Dan B. Allender, PhD, author of Bold Love This new edition includes an expanded chapter on using the practical "prayer cards"--a hallmark of the teaching found in A Praying Life--and a chapter on the need and use of prayers of lament. Prayer is so hard that unless circumstances demand it--an illness, or saying grace at a meal--most of us simply do not pray. We prize accomplishments and productivity over time in prayer. Even Christians experience this prayerlessness--a kind of practical unbelief that leaves us marked by fear, anxiety, joylessness, and spiritual lethargy. Prayer is all about relationship. Based on the popular seminar by the same name, A Praying Life has discipled thousands of Christians to a vibrant prayer life full of joy and power. When Jesus describes the intimacy He seeks with us, He talks about joining us for dinner (Revelation 3:20). A Praying Life feels like having dinner with good friends. It is the way we experience and connect to God. In A Praying Life, author Paul Miller lays out a pattern for living in relationship with God and includes helpful habits and approaches to prayer that enable us to return to a childlike faith.
Download or read book God on the Big Screen written by Terry Lindvall and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Links film history with church history over the past century, illuminating America’s broader relationship with religious currents over time Moments of prayer have been represented in Hollywood movies since the silent era, appearing unexpectedly in films as diverse as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Frankenstein, Amistad, Easy Rider, Talladega Nights, and Alien 3, as well as in religiously inspired classics such as Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments. Here, Terry Lindvall examines how films have reflected, and sometimes sought to prescribe, ideas about how one ought to pray. He surveys the landscape of those films that employ prayer in their narratives, beginning with the silent era and moving through the uplifting and inspirational movies of the Great Depression and World War II, the cynical, anti-establishment films of the 60s and 70s, and the sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters of today. Lindvall considers how the presentation of cinematic prayer varies across race, age, and gender, and places the use of prayer in film in historical context, shedding light on the religious currents at play during those time periods. God on the Big Screen demonstrates that the way prayer is presented in film during each historical period tells us a great deal about America’s broader relationship with religion.

Download or read book Praying in God s Theater written by Joel L. Watts and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much like the book of Revelation, Joel L. Watts' Praying in God's Theater aims to pull readers into a deeper spirituality to confront the daily struggles of Christian life. Drawing from the rich well of Christian mystics and theologians from across the ecumenical experience, Watts uses the Apocalypse to build a series of prayers and devotions aimed at increasing what he identifies as the contemplative unity and the certain unity between the individual and Christ. He urges a radical vision of the prayer and the sacrament of the Eucharist. Each chapter of Revelation is considered, explored, and finally used as a basis to draft prayers. Added to this is an application commentary that explores ancient liturgical practices similar to the scenes in Revelation while looking at Revelation in a mystical manner. Watts offers Revelation as an early liturgy, using this proposition as a catalyst for building prayers and a vision of life based on the Eucharist as the emblem of how we are to approach God. What emerges is a profound view on how we envision Scripture, prayer, and the book of Revelation.

Download or read book Travailing in Prayer written by Betty A. Collins and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus travailed at Gethsemane, interceding, and agonizing ...for the whole creation. He prayed, "Not my will, but thou will be done." The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. For years, at 3:00 am, the Holy Spirit woke me up to pray. One morning, I was awakened by a bright light shining in one corner of my bedroom. I felt led to pray for specific individuals. Later that day, the first person I prayed for called saying they woke up early that morning with chest pains and difficulty breathing. They're fine now. When I told God I wanted to be a Missionary, He made me a missionary in the workplace; I've spearheaded lunchtime Bible Study groups and was an Intercessor. The workplace is a big mission field. God taught me about demon spirits. I interceded on behalf of people possessed with or oppressed by demons. Betty A. Collins is an Intercessor and has the gift of Prophesy. She is the mother of one grown son, Robyn, who is blessed with an eye for photography. For over twenty years, she trained, mentored, and encouraged young people in church and in the secular. She was a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for thirteen years representing abused, neglected, and at-risk youth in both Contra Costa and Alameda County Courts. She was a first grade Sunday school teacher. While working at different companies, she spearheaded lunchtime Bible Study and prayer groups. Before she retired, she was a Technical Writer in Information Technology developing company manuals.

Download or read book Pivotal Praying written by John Hull and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all face critical forks in the road-marriage, the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, or a personal health crisis. How are we to pray at these junctures? Perhaps our instinct is to send up a quick "911" prayer, but authors John Hull and Tim Elmore demonstrate how by praying the right prayer at the right time, we can see the incredible impact of what God can do. Scripture offers countless examples of men and women who prayed strategically and saw results. Remember Solomon's prayer for wisdom? He received it-and wealth beyond his imagination as well. And how about Hannah's desire for a child? God honored her prayer; her son Samuel became the greatest judge in Israel's history. Pivotal Praying uses these examples and others to illustrate the power of effective-and ineffective-praying. For those seeking to enlarge their prayer vision and alter their circumstances for God's glory, Pivotal Praying is an ideal resource.
