Book Praying for a Whole New World

Download or read book Praying for a Whole New World written by William G. Carter and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history professor told me that the earliest Protestants in America discouraged the celebration of Christmas. "It's too much fun," the Puritans reasoned, "and the Gospel of Jesus Christ requires our utmost seriousness." -- from the Introduction At a time of year which is often as stressful and exhausting as it is exhilarating, William Carter reminds us that while holiday celebrations will fade into winter gloom, Jesus Christ, the light that casts no shadow, remains at the center of our faith and lives. This collection of seventeen sermons based on the Revised Common Lectionary is for readers who wish to take the gospel seriously during a season when commercialism and social activities can be overwhelming. Carter's messages provide a wonderful interplay between the biblical text and illustrations drawn from contemporary life. He brings the sensibilities of an accomplished jazz musician to the lectionary readings, creating new melodies that arise from the established material -- some in counterpoint to the scripture, others elaborating upon the original tune. The sermons of this outstanding preacher are inspiring reading for both clergy and laypeople! Senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, William G. Carter has received national recognition for his preaching and writing, with sermons and articles appearing in Journal for Preachers, Presbyterian Survey, Preaching, Lectionary Homiletics, The Christian Ministry, and Best Sermons 7. In 1999, he was selected to preach on The Protestant Hour, an international radio ministry that reaches over two million listeners each week. He frequently leads workshops for pastors on homiletical themes and practices. A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, Carter serves on the seminary's board of trustees. Reverend Carter is also a highly regarded jazz pianist who has studied and performed with such noted artists as Phil Woods and Bob Brookmeyer. He has traveled widely presenting contemporary worship services and frequently weaves his music into his ministry.

Book excerpt: Are you praying constricted prayers or disruptive ones? Most prayers are constricted ones. They’re prayers that only focus on one part of the Lord’s Prayer: “give us our daily bread.” They’re usually focused on self and envision God as a heavenly caretaker. Disruptive prayers, on the other hand, are powerful, uncommon, and deeply biblical. They focus on God rather than self, seek to advance the kingdom, and submit all things to God. They are also prayed with a profound belief that prayer actually accomplishes something. When we pray disruptive prayers, that’s when the revolution begins. This book shows you how to equip leaders, fuel kingdom movements, and do real damage to the powers of darkness in the here and now. But most of all, discover how your own heart will be transformed as you begin to see how much bigger prayer, and God, is than you ever thought possible.

Book excerpt: It is the year 2047. When a huge 110 mile wide asteroid hurtling towards Earth is discovered by Eddie Thompson, the governments of the time realize the devastating implications for the future of mankind. They put their differences aside to work together in secret, trying to devise a means to remove the threat of this asteroid, but also a means to escape Earth should their best efforts fail. A colonizer ship is constructed in out of sight of the public behind the moon, and no expenses are spared. The last nuclear warheads are placed on ballistic missiles and launched to either deflect or destroy the asteroid named Derak but in the end their plans fails miserably and in 2054 it crashes into India, ending all life. Nothing survives the apocalyptic disaster. But not before a hundred and forty thousand carefully selected people escape on the first interstellar ship ever built the Genesis and head towards a known Earth like planet discovered earlier around a far away star. In Genesis, the last survivors of humanity travel for sixty years at near light speed and in deep sleep until they arrive at the new planetary system of 10 Tauri, where they find against all odds a new Earth teeming with life, and here they take on a fantastic adventure of colonizing this new world, set in a Jurassic type era. When one of the landing shuttles crash in a remote jungle, their survival is complicated by the discovery of two primitive civilizations at war

Download or read book The Christian Imagination written by Willie James Jennings and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has Christianity, a religion premised upon neighborly love, failed in its attempts to heal social divisions? In this ambitious and wide-ranging work, Willie James Jennings delves deep into the late medieval soil in which the modern Christian imagination grew, to reveal how Christianity's highly refined process of socialization has inadvertently created and maintained segregated societies. A probing study of the cultural fragmentation-social, spatial, and racial-that took root in the Western mind, this book shows how Christianity has consistently forged Christian nations rather than encouraging genuine communion between disparate groups and individuals. Weaving together the stories of Zurara, the royal chronicler of Prince Henry, the Jesuit theologian Jose de Acosta, the famed Anglican Bishop John William Colenso, and the former slave writer Olaudah Equiano, Jennings narrates a tale of loss, forgetfulness, and missed opportunities for the transformation of Christian communities. Touching on issues of slavery, geography, Native American history, Jewish-Christian relations, literacy, and translation, he brilliantly exposes how the loss of land and the supersessionist ideas behind the Christian missionary movement are both deeply implicated in the invention of race. Using his bold, creative, and courageous critique to imagine a truly cosmopolitan citizenship that transcends geopolitical, nationalist, ethnic, and racial boundaries, Jennings charts, with great vision, new ways of imagining ourselves, our communities, and the landscapes we inhabit.

Book Sermons from Mind and Heart

Download or read book Sermons from Mind and Heart written by Rodney Wallace Kennedy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sermons from Mind and Heart attempts to show the week-by-week theological work that a pastor does. The combining of the intellectual with the emotional is rooted in the categories of logos and pathos from Aristotle's Rhetoric. Some of the sermons have substantive theological reflections with multiple sources and are thus heavily footnoted; other sermons have no footnotes. This doesn't mean that any sermon lacks logos or pathos but that there is an interplay, a back-and-forth, of a pastor struggling to communicate the Gospel in a "this is that" way that honors both the "then" of Scripture and the "now" of contemporary life. Rhetorical scholarship and methodology are important in understanding the content and the structure of the sermons. What matters most is the sense that these sermons are an ongoing theological conversation between the pastor and his congregation. Sermons, after all, are meant to be heard, and they exist in the moment as authentic rhetorical acts. All other versions of the sermon, including this written form, are only echoes of the primal sermonic experience.

Download or read book Adventures in Prayer written by Sharon Connors and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2006-02-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about creating a better life through prayer. Sharon Connors tested the power of prayer over and over as she grew from a frightened, impoverished, but determined single mother of two children to a senior minister who has brought the gift of prayer to thousands. The people she works with ask basic questions like: How should I pray? What if I'm afraid of God or angry at God? How do I know prayer is working? Is it all right to pray for myself and for specific things I want? How can I build my faith? This step-by-step guide provides honest, practical answers--and the inspiration to act on them. Sharon Connors teaches prayer as a learnable technique that improves with daily practice. She interweaves basic principles with moving personal stories from her own life and those she has served, and offers dozens of original prayers and affirmations that address readers' most urgent needs. Building on the conviction that the human mind is a powerful creative force designed to communicate with God, she first shows how to focus the power of mind in prayer. In each chapter that follows, she describes how to use prayer in specific circumstances, including: Healing broken relationships Seeking guidance in times of confusion Transforming the fear of change and mastering life's storms Building prosperity Learning to forgive Finding your purpose in life The final chapter, "Creating Miracles," teaches the "four ways of gratitude," which have the greatest power to turn around our lives. Reverend Connors has explored a wide range of prayer and healing approaches from many spiritual traditions, and these diverse practices are reflected in her book.

Book Practicing Prayer for the Dead

Download or read book Practicing Prayer for the Dead written by James B. Gould and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history Christians have prayed for the dead. This book challenges Protestants, who seldom pray for the dead, to begin doing so, and Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, who pray only for the Christian dead, to include the unsaved as well. Gould discusses the meaning of prayer for final consummation of all things, growth of the blessed in heaven, purification of the imperfect in purgatory, and salvation of the unsaved in hell--identifying the necessary conception of the afterlife required by each particular prayer. He also reflects on the spiritual value of prayer for the departed--how it enhances faith, builds hope, and sharpens discipleship--and provides some sample prayers for public liturgy and private devotion. In essence, Practicing Prayer for the Dead offers an outline of theology from the perspective of death, arguing that prayer for all the departed is one aspect of a tightly knit web of doctrines. The argument, while revisionary in some respects, is orthodox, ecumenical, and integrative, engaging a range of academic disciplines so as to be biblically accurate, historically informed, and philosophically reasoned.

Book excerpt: Forever Prayer is the story of one man's search for understanding the essential nature of prayer. The conclusion is that our thoughts reveal who we really are and what we truly desire--and God is keenly aware all the time of all our thoughts. That makes us forever at prayer because God is always listening in on our thoughts. If we can believe this, and become aware that we are always at prayer, our lives will become more in tune with God's presence and desires as revealed to us in his Word. Forever Prayer will enlighten and renew your thinking about prayer. Have you ever considered your thoughts being known to God? That would mean you are always at prayer because God would always know your desires at all times. It would also make it very important to maintain good thoughts that please God. Also, good behavior would be expected to follow. Of course, you would have to know what pleases God and that would mean having a knowledge of the Bible which contains God's desires for your life.
