Download or read book Prayer and Intelligence Selected Essays written by Jacques Maritain and published by Cluny Media, LLC. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authored by Jacques and Raissa Maritain, Prayer and Intelligence is a practical book about mental prayer and how to pray. It is also a book about the intellectual life. How does our intellectual search for God influence our life of prayer and how does the discipline of a life of prayer act as the necessary grounding for a profound and sustained search for the truth? In the pages of this book, philosophy and the spiritual life intertwine and strengthen each other. Accompanying Prayer and Intelligence are two essays, Liturgy and Contemplation, also written by Jacques and Raissa together, and Notes on the Lord's Prayer, written by Raissa. The former is a study of how the Church's liturgy prepares for our union with God by contemplation of love. The latter is a powerful meditation on the great gift of the prayer of Christ himself, "the prayer that is universally true and needed." All three of the works contained in this volume are written by friends, for friends, seeking to know and love God. If we wish to grow in our spiritual life, this book serves as a great guide."

Download or read book Selected Essays Volume II written by Andrew Louth and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taken together, these two volumes collect seventy-five essays written by Professor Andrew Louth over a forty-year period. Louth's contribution to scholarship and theology has always been significant, and these essays have been collected from journals and edited collections, many of which are difficult to access, and are here made available over two thought-provoking and wide-ranging volumes. Volume II collects essays on a variety of theological topics, arranged chronologically, showing the development of Louth's thought since 1978. Throughout this collection the nature of 'theology', as it is understood within Orthodox tradition, is a constant concern. These essays offer distinctive reflections on categories -- such as 'development of doctrine' -- that have become foundational in modern western thought but which must be viewed rather differently from an Orthodox perspective. The legacy of modern Russian Orthodox thought -- especially the key figures of the twentieth century Russian diaspora -- is under constant consideration, and forms a constant dialogue partner.

Download or read book Selected Essays written by Walter Pater and published by Carcanet Press Ltd. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famed for his singular prose style as much as for his controversial aestheticist principles, Walter Pater (1839-1894) was one of the great essayists in a century of great essayistic writing. His first book, Studies in the History of the Renaissance — one of the most original and influential texts of the Victorian Aesthetic Movement — was described by Arthur Symons as 'the most beautiful book of prose in our literature', and his later work moved Vernon Lee to call him 'the natural exponent of the highest aesthetic doctrine'. Selected Essays is a generous gathering of Pater's essays on literature, art, history, philosophy and mythology — all of them, in the words of Oscar Wilde, 'delicately wrought works of art'. The selection is accompanied by Alex Wong's critical and biographical introduction and rich explanatory notes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part III, "The Terrain of Literature," features Greene's examination of a variety of literary approaches to literature in an era when the subject needs to be referred as well to cognitive science as more conventional critical modes, even deconstruction, that have long defined it. Additionally, he illuminates important works by writers as various as Jane Austen and Evelyn Waugh. These essays, as well as the book as a whole, are framed here by Greene's assessment of Canadian literature that calls attention to the native terrain that he originally called home and how the latter contributed to the making of one of the most cosmopolitan scholars of his era."--Jacket.
Download or read book Selected Essays and Other Writings of John Donald Wade written by John Donald Wade and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important of the Southern magazines in the 1920s was The Fugitive, a magazine of verse and brief commentaries on literature in general. Among its contributors were John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, Donald Davidson, and Merrill Moore. Publication began in April 1922 and ended in December 1925. Soon thereafter, the “Fugitive” writers and some others became profoundly concerned with the materialism of American life and its effect upon the South. The group became known as “Agrarians.” Their thinking and discussion culminated in a symposium, I'll Take My Stand, published in 1930. In his first two lectures Davidson describes the underlying nature and aims of the Fugitive and Agrarian movements. He brings to the discussion his intimate and thorough knowledge of Southern life and letters. The third lecture deals with the place of the writer in the modern university, posing the questions of whether the writer needs the university and whether the university needs or wants the writer.

Book excerpt: The engaging and inquiring mind of French philosopher Jacques Maritain reflected on subjects as varied as art and ethics, theology and psychology, and history and metaphysics. Maritain's work on the theoretical groundings of politics arose from his diverse studies. In this book, distinguished theologian and political scientist James V. Schall explores Maritain's political philosophy, demonstrating that Maritain understood society, state, and government in the tradition of Aristotle and Aquinas, of natural law and human rights and duties. Schall pays particular attention to the ways in which evil appears in political forms, and how this evil can be morally dealt with. Schall's study will be of great importance to students and scholars of political science, philosophy, and theology.
