Download or read book Flourishing written by Neil Messer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use such words as "health," "disease," and "illness" all the time without stopping to consider exactly what we understand by them. Yet their meanings are far from straightforward, and disagreements over them have important practical consequences in health care and bioethics. In this book Neil Messer develops a distinctive and innovative theological account of these concepts. He engages in earnest with debates in the philosophy of medicine and disability studies and draws on a wide array of theological resources including Barth, Bonhoeffer, Aquinas, and recent disability theologies. By enabling us to understand health in the wider perspective of the flourishing and ultimate destiny of human beings, Messer's Flourishing sheds new light on a range of practical bioethical issues and dilemmas.
Download or read book In Fidelity written by Rob Drummond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I told her that it wouldn't be appropriate for us to meet in person. She asked me why not. I told her the truth. Because I was extremely attracted to her and didn't want to court the destruction of my marriage. She said, your wife never needs to know. It will just be a little adventure. Nothing even needs to happen. September 2016 marks the fifteen-year anniversary of Rob and Lucy's very first date. What better way to mark this milestone than to create a show all about love? As part of his research Rob underwent an MRI scan. His ventromedial prefrontal cortex surged when looking at a picture of his wife. However, it also surged while looking at other pictures. In equal parts TED Talk and theatrical experiment, this is the show that combines a live on-stage date and evolutionary theory. Whether you're single or attached, this is a big-hearted play for those looking to find love and those wanting to celebrate it. In Fidelity received its world premiere at the HighTide Festival 2016.

Download or read book Harrogate written by Al Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's gossip going around that we're all like him. That we're all paper thin, that it's all been painted over, and each one of us is gonna sit down one day and not be able to stand up, like we've disappeared to ourselves. Harrogate tells the story of a father struggling to confront his obsessions head-on without destroying his family. It is a play about how we perform versions of ourselves depending on what company we keep, and how we project onto others versions of the people we want to see, rather than accepting who stands in front of us. The play is a triptych about obsession, repression and lust. It received its world premiere on the 11 September 2015 as part of the HighTide Theatre Festival.

Book excerpt: In an age where young people seem to have a natural affinity with smartphones, computer games and social media, teachers and lecturers face a big challenge - or a golden opportunity. How can new technology promote learning, engage students and motivate them to sustain a lifelong career in learning? For educators everywhere, our challenge is to take devices that have the potential for great distraction and boldly appropriate them as tools that can inspire and engage. On the back of Steve's hugely popular blog, also named 'Learning with 'e's', he shows how the world of learning is changing, and how new technology - and you and I - can make a difference. The proliferation of digital technologies and cultures is having a profound impact on learning, prompting questions which need answers. How will technology change our conceptions of learning? How will new ways of learning impact upon our uses of technology? How will teachers and lecturers' roles change; what will they need to know; and what will we see learners doing in the future? Grounded in his research and in pedagogical theory, Steve explores the practical ways in which technology is influencing how we learn, and looks toward emerging trends to examine what the future of learning may look like. Subjects covered include: learning with technology, theories for the digital age, digital literacies, pedagogical theories and practices, new and emerging technologies, new learning architectures, changing education, global educators, a 21st century curriculum. For teachers, lecturers, learning and development professionals and anybody who wants to be inspired by the new ways learning is being revolutionised through the use of new and emerging technologies.
Download or read book Gustavo Gutierrez written by Robert McAfee Brown and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a definitive introduction to liberation theology through the life and work of its most significant proponent, Gustavo Gutierrez. Robert McAfee Brown draws extensively on Gutierrez's own writings (some never published in English) and on personal conversations with him. Brown clearly and compellingly presents the basics of liberation theology and the differences between North American and Latin American theologies. The form of Gustavo Gutierrez is that of a drama. Brown's initial "program notes" introduce and situate the "author," the "actors," the "critics." He sets the stage with a history of church and state in Latin America and introduces its definitive figures, themes, and milestones. A collective biography of Gutierrez's spiritual predecessors is followed by a biography of Gutierrez himself, which takes critical account of his works. Then we are ready, dramatically and theologically, to move to the first act: that of commitment to the poor. The second act, in two scenes, explores first liberation theology's method of critical reflection on praxis and also its content: nothing less than the Word of God. Brown delves next into the controversies and criticisms Gutierrez faces, especially the challenges from authorities in Rome. Finally, in act three, readers discover that in this particular drama, they too are "on stage" and must take part by reflecting on what this drama really means for them.

Download or read book Renaissance Utopias and the Problem of History written by Marina Leslie and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marina Leslie draws on three important early modern utopian texts—Thomas More's Utopia, Francis Bacon's New Atlantis, and Margaret Cavendish's Description of a New World Called the Blazing World—as a means of exploring models for historical transformation and of addressing the relationship of literature and history in contemporary critical practice. While the genre of utopian texts is a fertile terrain for historicist readings, Leslie demonstrates that utopia provides unstable ground for charting out the relation of literary text to historical context. In particular, she examines the ways that both Marxist and new historicist critics have taken the literary utopia not simply as one form among many available for reading historically but as a privileged form or methodological paradigm. Rather than approach utopia by mapping out a fixed set of formal features, or by tracing the development of the genre, Leslie elaborates a history of utopia as critical practice. Moreover, by taking every reading of utopia to be as historically symptomatic as the literary production it assesses, her book integrates readings of these three English Renaissance utopias with an analysis of the history and politics of reading utopia. Throughout, Leslie considers utopia as a fictional enactment of historical process and method. In her view, these early modern utopian constructions of history relate very closely to and impinge upon the narrative structures of history assumed by critical theory today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned philosophers and medical ethicists debate and discuss the profoundly important concepts of disease and health. Christopher Boorse begins with an extensive reexamination of his seminal definition of disease as a value-free scientific concept. In responding to all those who criticized this view, which came to be called "naturalism" or "neutralism," Boorse clarifies and updates his landmark ideas on this crucial question. Other distinguished thinkers analyze, develop, and oftentimes defend competing, nonnaturalistic theories of disease. Their combined thoughts review and update an issue of central importance in bioethics today.
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Reinventing Management Education written by Chris Steyaert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The position and role of the business school and its educational programmes have become increasingly prominent, yet also questioned and contested. What management education entails, and how it is enacted, has become a matter of profound concern in the field of higher education and, more generally, for the development of the organized world. Drawing upon the humanities and social sciences, The Routledge Companion to Reinventing Management Education imagines a different and better education offered to students of management, entrepreneurship and organization studies. It is an intervention into the debates on what is taught and how learning takes place, demonstrating both the potential and the limits of what the humanities and social sciences can do for management education. Divided into six sections, the book traces the history and theory of management education, reimagining central educational principles and outlining an emerging practice-based approach. With an international cast of authors, The Routledge Companion to Reinventing Management Education has been written for contemporary and future educators and for students and scholars who seek to make a difference through their practice.
