Book excerpt: This biography of the Polish British anthropologist Maria Czaplicka (1884–1921) is also a cultural study of the dynamics of the anthropological collective presented from a researcher-centric perspective. Czaplicka, together with Bronisław Malinowski, studied anthropology in London and later at Oxford, then she headed the Yenisei Expedition to Siberia (1914–15) and was the first female lecturer of anthropology at Oxford. She was an engaged feminist and an expert on political issues in Northern Asia and Eastern Europe. But this remarkable woman’s career was cut short by suicide. Like many women anthropologists of the time, Czaplicka journeyed through various academic institutions, and her legacy has been dispersed and her field materials lost. Grażyna Kubica covers the major events in Czaplicka’s life and provides contextual knowledge about the intellectual formation in which Czaplicka grew up, including the Warsaw radical intelligentsia and the contemporary anthropology of which she became a part. Kubica also presents a critical analysis of Czaplicka’s scientific and literary works, related to the issues of gender, shamanism, and race. Kubica shows how Czaplicka’s sense of agency and subjectivity enriched and shaped the practice of anthropology and sheds light on how scientific knowledge arises and is produced.

Praised for the lengths to which he would go to get a story, Kapuściński gained an extraordinary knowledge of the major global events of the second half of the twentieth century and shared it with his diverse audience. The first posthumous monograph on the writer’s life and work, Ryszard Kapuściński confronts the mixed reception of Kapuściński’s tendency to merge the conventions of reportage with the artistry of literature. Beata Nowacka and Zygmunt Ziątek discuss the writer’s accounts of the decolonization of Africa and his work in Asia and South America between 1956 and 1981, a period during which Kapuściński reported on twenty-seven revolutions and coups. They argue that the journalistic tradition is not in conflict with Kapuściński’s meditations on the deep meanings of these events, and that his first-person involvement in his text was not an indulgence detracting from his journalistic adventures but a well-thought-out conception of eyewitness testimony, developing the moral and philosophical message of the stories. Exploring the whole of Kapuściński’s achievements, Nowacka and Ziątek identify a constant tension between a strictly journalistic position and what in Poland is called literary reportage, located on the border between journalism and artistic prose. Kapuściński’s desire and dedication to make more of journalistic writing is the driving force behind the excellence and readability that have made his legendary books so controversial – and so widely celebrated.

It is an analysis of over 30 volumes of the Full Collection of Russian Chronicles, that dates back to 855 A.D. The chronicles in Medieval Ages were written in Slavic using Cyrillic alphabet by monks of the Russian Orthodox Church and in Old German and Medieval Latin by monks of the Teutonic Order. Full texts from Lithuanian in Old Belorussian tongue and excerpts in translations from Russian and Teutonic are included. The book starts in 13th century Lithuania—the time Lithuania emerged as state. The analysis of chronicles takes its reader through said above records made by Russian Orthodox monks (855 - 1453 A.D.), and to records and documents made by Catholics—Teutons and Poles (1191 - 1434 A.D.), Lithuanian (1345 - 1446), and ends with remarks about errors in dictionaries. The book describes the order in which chronicles were copied and therefore contains solutions to unsolved problems of sequence. The book contains graphs, tables, maps, that clarify explanations, a dictionary with almost 2200 entries and an Indices of Names, Tribes, Geographical Places, in which the Author provided extended information about the people, tribes, and places.
