These tales of a neo-romantics spiritual quest take the reader on a rollercoaster of spiritual highs and carnal depths presented in a variety of forms ranging from traditional sonnets to urban verse. After years of musical and spoken word performances throughout themidwest, Asale Lara unleashes his first book of poetry, Praise, Pain & Lust. Book excerpt: In the jungles of Northern Thailand, environmentalists Alan Griswold and Kate Barstow witness the brutal murder of a young couple hunted for sport. Having secretly photographed the grisly slayings, Griswold attempts to flee along with Barstow but is captured by a band of mercenaries in the pay of a sadistic former U.S. Marine general. During his torture, Griswold reveals the existence of the film, which Barstow, now on the run, has in her possession. She is lucky enough to be discovered by outdoor guide John Armstrong and his photographer client, who help her escape the jungle, but only after narrowly evading Griswold's captors. With Barstow back in Bangkok under Armstrong's protection, the film is processed and Armstrong recognizes the ex-general as his former commanding officer in Vietnam. While in the bustling Asian metropolis, Kate is saved by Armstrong's son, Mike, from a kidnapping attempt. A mutual attraction builds between the two and Mike is drawn into the battle ahead. As fists and bullets fly, the struggle for the evidence escalates. The action never slows as this fast-paced story of revenge, greed and retribution hurtles towards the final confrontation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a rhetorical manual for political and business leaders to motivate followers even in times of hardship. It covers the fine art of persuasion and argues that there are four speeches every leader has to know: the opening speech, the executioner speech, the consolation speech, and the farewell speech. The authors explore how leaders could speak in order to appear credible to an audience, and they argue that the leader has to take on suffering and give meaning to the suffering people experience. The book analyzes speeches from a wide variety of speakers, including Sir Winston Churchill, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, and Angela Merkel, and ends with a rhetorical dictionary for leaders to help readers familiarize themselves with helpful terms from rhetorical theory.

Book Being Lolita

Download or read book Being Lolita written by Alisson Wood and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dark relationship evolves between a high schooler and her English teacher in this breathtakingly powerful memoir about a young woman who must learn to rewrite her own story. “Have you ever read Lolita?” So begins seventeen-year-old Alisson’s metamorphosis from student to lover and then victim. A lonely and vulnerable high school senior, Alisson finds solace only in her writing—and in a young, charismatic English teacher, Mr. North. Mr. North gives Alisson a copy of Lolita to read, telling her it is a beautiful story about love. The book soon becomes the backdrop to a connection that blooms from a simple crush into a forbidden romance. But as Mr. North’s hold on her tightens, Alisson is forced to evaluate how much of their narrative is actually a disturbing fiction. In the wake of what becomes a deeply abusive relationship, Alisson is faced again and again with the story of her past, from rereading Lolita in college to working with teenage girls to becoming a professor of creative writing. It is only with that distance and perspective that she understands the ultimate power language has had on her—and how to harness that power to tell her own true story. Being Lolita is a stunning coming-of-age memoir that shines a bright light on our shifting perceptions of consent, vulnerability, and power. This is the story of what happens when a young woman realizes her entire narrative must be rewritten—and then takes back the pen to rewrite it.

Book Sex and the Supremacy of Christ

Download or read book Sex and the Supremacy of Christ written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2005-06-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible has a way of shocking us. If Americans could still blush, we might blush at the words, "Rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love" (Proverbs 5:18-19). But, of course, sin always tries to trash God's gifts. So we can't just celebrate sex for what God made it to be; we have to fight what sin turned it into. The contributors to this unique volume encourage you to do both: celebrate and struggle. This book has something for all-men and women, married and single-from contributors like John Piper, C. J. and Carolyn Mahaney, Mark Dever, Al Mohler, Carolyn McCulley, and others.

  • Author : Inacent Saunders
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015-08-09

Download or read book From Pain to Praise written by Inacent Saunders and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Pain to Praise: The Prose and Poems of a Daughter-in-Process, debut author Inacent Saunders shares a collection of poems, short stories, and journal entries written throughout her journey of adolescent self-discovery. Along this journey Inacent encountered such stumbling blocks as abandonment, loss, anger, alcoholism, and lust - issues that are not uncommon to many women, even "Women of God". However, these issues are sometimes hard for Christian women to admit to one another. This is especially true of younger Christian women who are constantly admonished to "live holy", and are often harshly criticized if they should fall short of these expectations. The specially selected pieces in this anthology are intended to finally acknowledge some of the pain, confusion, and trauma - with an honest, explicit voice - that many young women have dealt with (and may continue to deal with) along their Christian walk. The pieces also portray the personal growth that comes by enduring the process of sanctification. As for herself, Inacent knows that she was only able to overcome her pain by growing in relationship with Christ, which then put her on a path to salvation, repentance, deliverance, and an understanding of her true identity as a Daughter of the King! By sharing her journey from pain to praise, she hopes to inspire other young women to begin or continue their journey as well. PLEASE NOTE: Some of the pieces in this publication contain language of a violent, sexual and explicit nature.

Book Religions of Late Antiquity in Practice

Download or read book Religions of Late Antiquity in Practice written by Richard Valantasis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unprecedented collection of nearly seventy Late Antique primary religious texts. These texts--all in new English translation and many appearing in English for the first time--represent every major religious current from the late first century until the rise of Islam. Produced through the efforts of thirty-six leading scholars in the field, they constitute a comprehensive view of religious practice in Late Antiquity. Religious life and performance during this period comprised diverse, often unusual practices. Philosophical ascent, magic, legal pronouncement, hymnography, dietary and sexual restriction, and rhetoric were all part of this deeply fascinating world. Religious and political identity often intertwined, as reflected in the Roman persecution of Christians. And a fluid boundary between religion and superstition was contested in daily life. Many practices, including ascetic training, crossed religious boundaries. Others, such as "incubation" at specific temples and certain divination rites, were distinctive practices of individual groups and orders. Intrinsically interesting, the practice of religion in the Late Antique also edifies modern-day religious life. As this volume shows, the origins of the contemporary Western religious terrain can be gleaned in this period. Rabbinic Judaism flourished and spread. Christianity developed still-important theological categories and structures. And even movements that did not survive intact--such as Neoplatonism and the once-powerful Manichaean churches--continue to influence religion today. This rich sourcebook includes discussions of asceticism, religious organization, ritual, martyrdom, religion's social implications, law, and theology. Its unique emphasis on practice and its inclusion of texts translated from lesser-known languages advance the study of religious history in several directions. A strong interdisciplinary orientation will reward scholars and students of religion, theology, gender studies, classical literatures, and history. Each text is accompanied by an introduction and a bibliography for further reading and research, making the book appropriate for use in any university or seminary classroom.

Book In Praise of Forgiveness

Download or read book In Praise of Forgiveness written by Massimo Recalcati and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationships fall apart, marriages fail, couples break up – it happens to us all. Time corrodes passion and the routines of daily life kill the excitement that surrounds the emotion of the first encounter. The difficulty of uniting sexual pleasure with love, which Freud considered to be the most common neurosis in any love life, has become emblematic of a truth that seems undeniable: desire is destined to die if its object is not constantly renewed, if we do not change partner, if it is closed for too long in the restrictive chamber of the same bond. And yet what happens to these bonds when one of the two partners betrays the other, when the promise fails, when there is another emotional experience cloaked in secrecy and deceit? What happens if the traitor then begs forgiveness? Are they asking to be loved again and, having declared that it is not like it used to be, now want everything to go back to how it was? Should we make fun of lovers in their attempts to make love last? Or should we try to face up to the experience of betrayal, with the offence caused by the person we love most? Should we not perhaps attempt to praise forgiveness in love?
