Book Faint Praise and Civil Leer

Download or read book Faint Praise and Civil Leer written by Jon Thomas Rowland and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rowland examines Marvell's political poetry and Dryden's Annus Mirabilis, showing how panegyrical writing developed into mock-panegyric and satire, increasingly as much in response to versions of events as to the events themselves. The author then describes how Marvell exploits panegyrical strategies to subvert its conventional deliberative function, as his equal virtuosity at praise and blame actually undermines his ethos and separates his advice from any clear authority capable of implementing it. Moreover, in Marvell the addressee of conventional panegyric, while remaining ostensibly Charles II, is internalized in a series of grotesques resembling, in various ways, the megalomaniacal "Bayes" (Samuel Parker, Bishop of Oxford). Marvell uses variations on the abuse of the conventional panegyrical arrangement of people, poet, and prince as a metaphor for the abuse of the proper relationship between all signifieds and their signifiers." "Writing a generation later, Swift borrows many of the themes and motifs of The Rehearsal Transpros'd for his satire in A Tale of a Tub, in particular the association of the preface with panegyric, as a metaphor of the reversal that occurs between praiser and praised, vehicle and tenor, when proper relationships are abused. Rowland also explores how Swift moves from the unsatisfactory use of analogy in his panegyrical "Odes," to more satisfactory use of it in the Tale and then concentrates on the prefaces of the Tale as "Panegyrical paratext.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Fishing for Praise

  • ISBN : 1556354959

Download or read book Fishing for Praise written by Paul Poulton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise is a hidden doorway in the world that enables us to see things outside of the universe.ÊBut it's a doorway that is easily missed; people walk past it, thinking nothing of it, not realizing the value of it.ÊBut God has placed it there for us to walk through and see where he lives. This look at praise takes some surprising turns and gives us insight into heaven, hell, the world we live in, and our own souls. People praise all sorts of things. I find myself praising my wife--or praising children, footballers, or chefs. I even praise my dog. When we praise God, it is a natural extension of what we normally do every day.Ê And praise isn't one way, because God praises us, too. Ê When we are patient, praise will come our way from the most unexpected source, and it will come just when our enemies have turned up to see it.ÊGod intervenes on our behalf when we leave the task of being praised to him. Contrary to popular belief, praise comes to those who wait.ÊWe don't have to fish for it.

Book Economies of Praise

Download or read book Economies of Praise written by Ryan Netzley and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reevaluates early modern poems of praise as, paradoxically, challenging an artistic economy that values exchange and productivity Early modern poems of praise typically insist that they do not have a purpose or enact real labor beyond their effortless listing of laudable qualities. And yet the poets discussed in this study, including Ben Jonson, Andrew Marvell, Anne Bradstreet, Lucy Hutchinson, and John Milton, hint at an alternative aesthetic economy at work in their verse. Poetic praise, it turns out, might show us a social world outside the organizing principle of exchange. In Economies of Praise: Value, Labor, and Form in Seventeenth‐Century English Poetry, Ryan Netzley explores how poems of praise imagine alternatives to market and gift economies and point instead to a self-contained aesthetic economy that works against a more expansive and productivist understanding of literary art. By depicting exchange as inconsequential, unproductive, and redundant rather than a necessary constituent of social order, these poems model for modern readers a world without the imperative to create, appraise, and repeatedly demonstrate one’s own value.

Book Praise Motivation and the Child

Download or read book Praise Motivation and the Child written by Gill Robins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who spends time with children knows that praise works. It is a powerful motivator - praising children for good behaviour or good work builds self- esteem and self-confidence. Children love to collect stickers, certificates and rewards – so what better way is there to shape behaviour, encourage good work habits and produce confident learners? Teachers and parents alike know that praise is effective – we use it every day and we see the positive effect that it has on our children. However, constructivist practitioners would argue that praise in any form creates hierarchies and competition in the classroom, has little effect on genuine learning and is invasively judgemental rather than supportive. Constructivists would further argue that self-esteem cannot be built by external agency – teachers and parents can only create an appropriate environment in which a robust sense of ‘self’ can grow and develop. This book challenges traditional, embedded thinking about the role of praise. It questions the assumptions we make about developing self-esteem, about the ability of children to form their own independent judgements and the choices that children make regardless, rather than because of, contingent praise. What happens when children are praised? Read this book, listen to what children really think and challenge your own assumptions. Features include: Case studies and children’s work samples; Points for reflection which could be used for CPD sessions; Appendices containing behaviour policy samples; Pupil, teacher and parental perspectives. This book is aimed at practising and training Primary school teachers. It would also be suitable for NQTs who are starting to shape their own practice, experienced teachers who want to develop and question their own practice and students on BA Hons and PGCE courses.
