Book Restoring the Tallgrass Prairie

Download or read book Restoring the Tallgrass Prairie written by Shirley Shirley and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 1994-09 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iowa is the only state that lies entirely within the natural region of the tallgrass prairie. Early documents indicate that 95 percent of the state—close to 30 million acres—was covered by prairie vegetation at the time of Euro-American settlement. By 1930 the prairie sod had been almost totally converted to cropland; only about 30,000 acres of the original “great green sea” remained. Now, in this gracefully illustrated manual, Shirley Shirley has created a step-by-step guide to reconstructing the natural landscape of Iowa and the Upper Midwest. Chapters on planning, obtaining and selecting plants and seeds, starting seeds indoors, preparing the site, planting, and maintenance set the stage for comprehensive species accounts. Shirley gives firsthand information on soil, moisture, sun, and pH requirements; location, size, and structure; blooming time and color; and propagation, germination, and harvesting for more than a hundred wildflowers and grasses. Shirley's sketches—all drawn from native plants and from seedlings that she grew herself—will be valuable for even the most experienced gardener. While other books typically feature only the flowering plant, her careful drawings show the three stages of the seedlings, the flower, and the seedhead with seeds as well as the entire plant. This practical and attractive volume will help anyone dedicated to reconstructing the lost “emerald growth” of the historic tallgrass prairie.

Book The Restoration Economy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A landmark work . . . I was relieved to see that there is a good and reasonable solution to the ruinous policies of unbridled new development.” —Mark Stewart, CEO, iAccess Communications The Restoration Economy reveals the previously undocumented trillion-dollar global industries that are restoring our natural and manmade environments. Restorative development is rapidly overtaking new development because we are running out of things to develop. Most natural areas are already either farmed or degraded, and cities have built all the way to their borders. However, there is no lack of things to redevelop and restore. Storm Cunningham surveys the wide range of restoration industries and points out the connections among them. He shows, for example, how the restoration of a river ecosystem can have a major impact on the commercial success of a redeveloped historic urban waterfront. Written for a broad range of audiences, The Restoration Economy is an entertaining blend of business, science, and economics that details exciting new business and investment opportunities in this dynamic economic sector. “Any companies or consultants looking for new markets must read The Restoration Economy!” —Pamela J. Gordon, CMC, President, Technology Forecasters, Inc. “The Restoration Economy is required reading here at Weston Solutions. It has been indispensable in helping us refocus our strategy. ”—Bill Robertson, Chairman, Weston Solutions “The Restoration Economy is without a doubt the most important and valuable business book I have read in many years.” —Don Pross, Urban Revitalization Planner “This book is an original, a first! I profited from it greatly, and I quote from it in my speeches.” —William H. Hudnut III, Former Four-Term Mayor of Indianapolis

Book Restoring Ecological Health to Your Land

Download or read book Restoring Ecological Health to Your Land written by Steven I. Apfelbaum and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoring Ecological Health to Your Land is the first practical guidebook to give restorationists and would-be restorationists with little or no scientific training or background the “how to” information and knowledge they need to plan and implement ecological restoration activities. The book sets forth a step-by-step process for developing, implementing, monitoring, and refining on-the-ground restoration projects that is applicable to a wide range of landscapes and ecosystems. The first part of the book introduces the process of ecological restoration in simple, easily understood language through specific examples drawn from the authors’ experience restoring their own lands in southern and central Wisconsin. It offers systematic, step-by-step strategies along with inspiration and benchmark experiences. The book’s second half shows how that same “thinking” and “doing” can be applied to North America’s major ecosystems and landscapes in any condition or scale. No other ecological restoration book leads by example and first-hand experience likethis one. The authors encourage readers to champion restoration of ecosystems close to where they live . . . at home, on farms and ranches, in parks and preserves. It provides an essential bridge for people from all walks of life and all levels of experience—from land trust member property stewards to agency personnel responsible for restoring lands in their care—and represents a unique and important contribution to the literature on restoration.
