Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practicing Scripture is an original and detailed history of one of the most successful religious movements of late imperial China, the Non-Action Teachings, or Wuweijiao, from its beginnings in the late sixteenth century in the prefectures of southern Zhejiang to the middle of the twentieth century, when communist repression dealt it a crippling blow. Uncovering important data on its beliefs and practices, Barend ter Haar paints a wholly new picture of the group, which, despite its Daoist-sounding name, was a deeply devout lay Buddhist movement whose adherents rejected the worship of statues and ancestors while venerating the writings of Patriarch Luo (fl. early sixteenth century), a soldier-turned-lay-Buddhist. The texts, written in vernacular Chinese and known as the Five Books in Six Volumes, mix personal experiences, religious views, and a wealth of quotations from the Buddhist canon. Ter Haar convincingly demonstrates that the Non-Action Teachings was not messianic or millenarian in orientation and had nothing to do with other new religious groups and networks traditionally labelled as White Lotus Teachings. It combined Chan and Pure Land practices with a strong self-identity and vegetarianism and actively insisted on the right of free practice. Members of the movement created a foundation myth in which Ming (1368–1644) emperor Zhengde bestowed the right upon their mythical forefather. In addition, they produced an imperial proclamation whereby Emperor Kangxi of the Qing (1645–1911) granted the group similar privileges. Thanks to its expert handling of a great number and variety of extant sources, Practicing Scripture depicts one of the few lay movements in traditional China that can be understood in some depth, both in terms of its religious content and history and its social environment. The work will be welcomed by China specialists in religious and Buddhist studies and social history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the contemporary discussion of the Jesus tradition has focused on aspects of oral performance, storytelling, and social memory, on the premise that the practice of communal reading of written texts was a phenomenon documented no earlier than the second century CE. Brian J. Wright overturns the premise that communal reading of written texts was a phenomenon documented no earlier than the second century CE by examining evidence for its practice in the first century.

The second volume of Peterson's momentous five-part work on spiritual theology, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their own terms, as God's revelation, and to live them as we read them. Countering the widespread practice of using the Bible for self-serving purposes, Peterson here serves readers with a nourishing entrée into the formative, life-changing art of spiritual reading." - from the back of the book.

Book Oral Scribal Dimensions of Scripture Piety and Practice

Download or read book Oral Scribal Dimensions of Scripture Piety and Practice written by Werner H. Kelber and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2008 a conference was convened at Rice University that brought together experts in the three monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The papers discussed at the conference are presented here, revised and updated. The thirteen contributions comprise the keynote address by John Miles Foley; three essays on Judaism and the Hebrew Bible; three on the New Testament; three on the Qur'an; and two summarizing pieces, by the Africanist Ruth Finnegan and the Islamicist William Graham respectively. The central thesis of the book states that sacred Scripture was experienced by the three faiths less as a text contained between two covers and a literary genre, and far more as an oral phenomenon. In developing the performative, recitative aspects of the three religions, the authors directly or by implication challenge their distinctly textual identities. Instead of viewing the three faiths as quintessential religions of the book, these writers argue that the religions have been and continue to be appropriated not only as written but also very much as oral authorities, with the two media interpenetrating and mutually influencing each other in myriad ways.

Book Violence Scripture and Textual Practice in Early Judaism and Christianity

Download or read book Violence Scripture and Textual Practice in Early Judaism and Christianity written by Ra'anan S. Boustan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the various and overlapping discourses of “religious violence” that emerged within Jewish and Christian culture in the Roman world. Toward this end, the nine papers collected here address both the presence of violence within the authoritative scriptural traditions of early Judaism and Christianity and the redeployment of these older traditions to represent, legitimate, and indeed sacralize violence. Individual papers focus on the specific social and historical contexts from which these texts emerged, while the volume as a whole highlights the patterns of textual practice shared across social and religious boundaries. Throughout, the dynamic interplay between text, tradition, and violence in early Jewish and Christian culture is located within the broad landscape of Roman imperial society.

Book Introducing Theological Interpretation of Scripture

Download or read book Introducing Theological Interpretation of Scripture written by Daniel J. Treier and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological interpretation of Scripture is a growing trend in biblical interpretation, with an emphasis on the contexts of canon, creed, and church. This approach seeks to bridge the gap between biblical studies and theology, which grew wide with the ascendancy of critical approaches to Scripture. Introducing Theological Interpretation of Scripture is the first clear, systematic introduction to this movement for students. The book surveys the movement's history, themes, advocates, and positions and seeks to bring coherence to its various elements. Author Daniel Treier also explores what he sees as the greatest challenges the movement will have to address as it moves into the future. This helpful book is appropriate for pastors and lay readers interested in biblical interpretation.

Download or read book Practicing Scripture written by Keith H. Adkins and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concluding book of Dr. Adkins' in-depth Bible study trilogy, the author uses practical theology to navigate the challenging task of putting the Bible to use in our life. "Practicing Scripture" follows a tried and true methodology of explaining his system in Part One, demonstrating it in Part Two, then doing the task in Part Three with practical case studies. The heart of the book teaches how to live the Bible by naming the story you would like to have guidance on, then relating your story to Scripture. Pastor Adkins gives a whole host of ideas on how to achieve that goal by listing stories topically in alphabetical order, then showing what page to turn to in the book to find a corresponding biblical story. In the relating step, many life experiences in the Bible are explored along with thoughts shared on how to reflect theologically on the topic or issue at hand. The author then takes you through the process of critiquing the passage chosen to make sure it isn't taken out of context. Using the universal themes from the first eleven chapters of Genesis, he guides the reader through a process of making sure the chosen theme is biblical in nature. Sometimes the critique stage discovers we are not heading down a useful path, so the author employs a check and balance system by offering general themes of God's overall morality. The final step in practicing scripture has to do with change. This is where the reader is challenged to either live the Bible or give up and live a narcisstic life. Filled with stories from Pastor Adkins' thirty three years of real life ministerial experiences, one is confronted with the opportunity to adopt a proper biblical stance with respect to attitudes and actions. Part Three takes on hot topic issues ripped from the headlines, including abortion, homosexuality, capital punishment, and environmental stewardship, and runs them through the practical theology model. The book concludes with "An Exercise for Book Groups" and an extensive scriptural index for further individual or group reflection on topics that desperately need holy guidance.
