Book Practices for Bridge Approach Systems

Download or read book Practices for Bridge Approach Systems written by Mohamed Khaled ElBatanouny and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge approach systems are used by state departments of transportation (DOTs) to form a smooth transition between the roadway and bridges. Adequate performance of bridge approaches is of extreme importance to transportation agencies as they affect both safety and the public perception of ride quality if the transition is not smooth. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Synthesis 566: Practices for Bridge Approach Systems documents the current state of the practice at state DOTs related to the design, construction, and maintenance of bridge approach systems. State DOT design guides and standard specifications were reviewed as part of the information-gathering process.

Book Identification of the Best Practices for Design Construction and Repair of Bridge Approaches

Download or read book Identification of the Best Practices for Design Construction and Repair of Bridge Approaches written by David White and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge approach settlement and the formation of the bump is a common problem in Iowa that draws upon considerable resources for maintenance and creates a negative perception in the minds of transportation users. This research study was undertaken to investigate bridge approach problems and develop new concepts for design, construction, and maintenance that will reduce this costly problem. As a result of the research described in this report, the following changes are suggested for implementation on a pilot test basis: Use porous backfill behind the abutment and/or geocomposite drainage systems to improve drainage capacity and reduce erosion around the abutment; On a pilot basis, connect the approach slab to the bridge abutment, change the expansion joint at the bridge to a construction joint of 2 in., use a more effective joint sealing system at the CF joint, and change the abutment wall rebar from #5 to #7 for non-integral abutments; and For bridges with soft foundation or embankment soils, implement practices of better compaction, preloading, ground improvement, soil removal and replacement, or soil reinforcement that reduce time-dependent post construction settlements.

Book Seamless Bridge and Roadway System for the U S Practice

Download or read book Seamless Bridge and Roadway System for the U S Practice written by Nima Ala and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Expansion joints are one of the main causes for high maintenance costs in bridges. The search for ideal expansion joints has proven fruitless. That is why it has been said that "the best joint is no joint". A seamless bridge system is envisioned that results in bridges with long service lives by eliminating the joints over the entire length of the bridge, approach slab and a segment of the roadway called transition. All bridge thermal movements are dissipated to zero in the transition. The system is similar to a system developed in Australia but modifications had to be made to extend it for the U.S. practice in which jointed or flexible pavements are commonly used. While the remainder of paving within a roadway is jointed or flexible, a segment of roadway containing the bridge and the transition is similar to continuously reinforced concrete paving. The proposed transition system consists of a transition slab connected via "small piles" to a "secondary slab", embedded in the base soil. The advantages of the new system include low maintenance costs, long service life, and enhanced seismic performance. The system is beneficial in the case of skewed and/or curved bridges. Parametric studies using SAP2000 have then been utilized to comprehend the system behavior and to develop an experimental program in which a segment from the transition system is simulated. The experiment elucidated the effectiveness of the transition system, the behavior of geomaterial, and the behavior of pile slab connection. A small pile concrete slab connection detail with a simple construction technique is proposed. Detailed FE model of the as built connection was developed using ABAQUS to study the connection behavior and calibrate the models. SAP2000 models of the experimental sample were also developed. A special reinforcement reduction detail for the transition slab and cracked section analysis are explained to achieve a controlled cracking. Recommended design methods for the new components of the seamless system are explained. Life cycle cost analysis has been carried out.

Book Building Bridges Between Theory And Practice

Download or read book Building Bridges Between Theory And Practice written by David Blockley and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about bridging the huge gaps between what engineers know, what they do and why things go wrong. It puts engineering into a wider perspective so readers can see how it relates to other disciplines — especially science and technology. Many intellectuals have dismissed engineering as 'applied science', but this book shows how wrong it is to do so — engineers apply science, but their purpose is quite different. It takes the reader on a learning journey of reflections on the gaps between theory and practice in professional life — not just in engineering but across all disciplines. The learning is summarized through 20 learning points or lessons, each one placed in context. Some of the important lessons are about learning from failure, joining-up theory and practice, understanding process, classifying uncertainty, managing risks, finding resilience, thinking systems to improve performance and nurturing practical wisdom.

Book Applied Methods in Design and Construction of Bridges Highways and Roads

Download or read book Applied Methods in Design and Construction of Bridges Highways and Roads written by Khaled Ghaedi and published by Intechopen. Book Agent based Modeling of ABC Methods for Decision making in Highway Bridge Projects Including Uncertainty and Several Stakeholders

Download or read book Agent based Modeling of ABC Methods for Decision making in Highway Bridge Projects Including Uncertainty and Several Stakeholders written by Abdul Wahed Mohammed and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods that were recently introduced in the U.S. to reduce the on-site construction duration furnish several benefits to the public and highway agencies. Further, the traffic growth in addition to increasing number of functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridges necessitates the increased implementation of ABC methods. In recent years, several Departments of Transportation (DOTs) in the U.S. have developed decision-making models to compare broadly ABC to conventional bridge construction for a particular site. However, with increased implementation and advancements in ABC methods, there is a need for specifying a particular ABC method and a superstructure system for a site by means of evaluating the associated uncertainty. The uncertainty arises because of the activities associated with ABC methods, and constructibility and durability of superstructure systems with respect to site-specific conditions. Moreover, the interactions among the internal stakeholders such as the DOT, Designer, Contractors, Consultants, etc., while delivering a project using an ABC method contribute to the uncertainty. Understanding the need, a decision-making model is required that enables the evaluation of ABC methods and the associated superstructure systems in order to achieve optimal constructibility and durability of a bridge. The agent-based complex systems approach enables modeling and simulating the activities and stakeholder interactions in order to evaluate the impact of the uncertainty on the ABC project performance. The uncertainty can be quantified by identifying the parameters that contribute to uncertainty, and establishing parameter correlations with the site-specific data. The following outline the specific tasks performed during the research: (1) Documenting potential superstructure systems that can be used with the ABC methods for a particular region, (2) Documenting major activities and internal stakeholders of ABC methods, (3) Documenting parameters that contribute to uncertainty of the activities, (4) Developing the parameter correlations with site-specific data for a particular region, (5) Formulating the decision-making framework and demonstrating the framework using an example, and (6) Developing recommendations for future research to extend the framework to an automated decision-making model/tool.
