Book From General Practice to Primary Care

Download or read book From General Practice to Primary Care written by Steve Iliffe and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-02-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anxiety about medicine becoming impersonal and mechanised permeates the NHS. In addition, the popular media is full of stories about the health service and its unhappy staff, focusing on the belief that professionals and patients are being turned into assembly-line workers and objects. This is particularly prevalent in general practice, as plans for massive policlinics are revealed and payment systems shift seemingly inexorably towards incentives and targets. The ethos of family medicine, which places so much stress on continuity of care, psychosocial understanding of illness, and the careful management of doubt, is challenged by guidelines, governance, quality frameworks, and patient satisfaction surveys. General practice is being industrialized into primary care, or so it can seem. This book explores the many dimensions of industrialization as it has occurred to others in the past, and analyses the origins of the current wave of reform in general practice. It analyses why industrialization is being pursued as a government strategy, and explores its benefits and dangers. It concludes that the medical profession has reasons for being perturbed by industrialization, but that it has advantages as well as disadvantages for the NHS and the public. Its conclusions may not please either policy makers or practitioners, but they offer ways for professionals working in the community to customise current changes in potentially beneficial ways.

The team of contributors comprises established academics who have been actively involved in both research and policy-making in this field. • ISBN : 9780101798525
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Healthy lives healthy people written by Great Britain: Department of Health and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government recognises that many lifestyle-driven health problems are at alarming levels: obesity; high rates of sexually transmitted infections; a relatively large population of drug users; rising levels of harm from alcohol; 80,000 deaths a year from smoking; poor mental health; health inequalities between rich and poor. This white paper outlines the Government's proposals to protect the population from serious health threats; help people live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives; and improve the health of the poorest. It aims to empower individuals to make healthy choices and give communities and local government the freedom, responsibility and funding to innovate and develop ways of improving public health in their area. The paper responds to Sir Michael Marmot's strategic review of health inequalities in England post 2010 - "Fair society, healthy lives" (available at http://www.marmotreview.org/AssetLibrary/pdfs/Reports/FairSocietyHealthyLives.pdf) and adopts its life course framework for tackling the wider social determinants of health. A new dedicated public health service - Public Health England - will be created to ensure excellence, expertise and responsiveness, particularly on health protection where a national response is vital. The paper gives a timetable showing how the proposals will be implemented and an annex sets out a vision of the role of the Director of Public Health. The Department is also publishing a fuller story on the health of England in "Our health and wellbeing today" (http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/@dh/@en/@ps/documents/digitalasset/dh_122238.pdf), detailing the challenges and opportunities, and in 2011 will issue documents on major public health issues.

Book Partnerships Between Health and Local Government

Download or read book Partnerships Between Health and Local Government written by Stephanie Snape and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this collection of essays is partnerships between health and local government. Such partnerships are not new. Nor is discussion of the merits (or otherwise) of collaboration between the two sectors. The history of collaboration between these two sectors of the public services has been chequered to say the least; indeed, the boundary between health and social care has been described as a 'Berlin Wall'. However, New Labour's ascension to power in 1997 has rekindled an avid interest in this issue. The government's emphasis on partnerships and collaboration has been projected as a key element of its 'Third Way' philosophy. Partnership working in particular has been viewed as the most appropriate means of addressing endemic, obdurate social ills, such as social exclusion, poor health, poverty, and low educational standards.

Book EBOOK Restructuring the Medical Profession The Intraprofessional Relations of GPs and Hospital Consultants

Download or read book EBOOK Restructuring the Medical Profession The Intraprofessional Relations of GPs and Hospital Consultants written by Juan Baeza and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2005-11-16 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between general practitioners (GPs) and hospital consultants in the United Kingdom? How does government health policy impact upon GPs and hospital consultants? What influence does the medical profession have upon policy makers in the United Kingdom? The medical profession occupies a dominant position within the British health care system and as such is able to influence the development and implementation of health policy. The main division within the medical profession lies between general practitioners and hospital consultants. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of British health policy over the past twenty-five years. Drawing on data from case studies, it provides empirical evidence of the impact of recent health policies upon the National Health Service (in general) and the medical profession (in particular). The case studies provide an analysis of the impact of the 1991 NHS reforms, as well as examining the ongoing influence of the post 1999 NHS reforms upon these intraprofessional relations. What emerges is that the relationship between GPs and hospital consultants is transforming from a collegial to a more managerial relationship. This book sheds light on the resulting development of intraprofessional relations between GPs and hospital consultants within the NHS. Restructuring the Medical Profession is key reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and professionals in the fields of social policy and health policy. It is also of interest to health service practitioners, health service researchers and health policy makers.
