Book Advanced Practical Organic Chemistry Second Edition

Download or read book Advanced Practical Organic Chemistry Second Edition written by John Leonard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-06-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book achieved considerable success due to its ease of use and practical approach, and to the clear writing style of the authors. The preparation of organic compounds is still central to many disciplines, from the most applied to the highly academic and, more tan ever is not limited to chemists. With an emphasis on the most up-to-date techniques commonly used in organic syntheses, this book draws on the extensive experience of the authors and their association with some of the world's mleading laboratories of synthetic organic chemistry. In this new edition, all the figures have been re-drawn to bring them up to the highest possible standard, and the text has been revised to bring it up to date. Written primarily for postgraduate, advanced undergraduate and industrial organic chemists, particularly those involved in pharmaceutical, agrochemical and other areas of fine chemical research, the book is also a source of reference for biochemists, biologists, genetic engineers, material scientists and polymer researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the very best things about organic chemistry is actually doing experimental work at the beneh. This applies not only at the profes sionallevel but also from the earliest stages of apprenticeship to the craft as a student. The fascination sterns from the nature of the sub ject itself, with its vast array of different types of reaction and its al most infinite variety of different chemical compounds. Each reaction and each new compound pose their own particular problems to chal lenge the skill and ingenuity of the chemist, whether working in a first-year teaching la bora tory or at the frontiers of research. This book is intended to provide basic guidance in the essential experimental techniques used in a typical undergraduate course. It gives concise coverage of the range of practical skills required, from first-year level when students may have no previous experience, up to final-year level when students are usually involved in more complex and dem an ding experimental work in supervised research projects. Our objective was to produce a handbook of techniques that could be used with a variety of practical courses throughout a student's whole period of study. Those who run practical courses generally have strong feelings about what particular experiments or exercises are appropriate for their own students, and it is rare that a book of experiments suitable for one department is acceptable to another.

Book Practical Synthetic Organic Chemistry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Work in Organic Chemistry The object of this little book is to meet a want which the author has experienced in teaching the rudiments of Practical Organic Chemistry to students who can devote but little time to the subject. The subject matter of the following "Programmes of Work" has been chosen partly on account of its technical utility, and partly as affording practice in the application of the more important reagents employed in the investigation of the compounds of carbon. The writer wishes it to be expressly understood that the book is only intended to be a laboratory guide, and its use should be supplemented by reference to standard works, or still better by personal instruction from the teacher. Book Essential Practical NMR for Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Essential Practical NMR for Organic Chemistry written by S. A. Richards and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the use of NMR spectroscopy for dealing with problems of small organic molecule structural elucidation. It features a significant amount of vital chemical shift and coupling information but more importantly, it presents sound principles for the selection of the techniques relevant to the solving of particular types of problem, whilst stressing the importance of extracting the maximum available information from the simple 1-D proton experiment and of using this to plan subsequent experiments. Proton NMR is covered in detail, with a description of the fundamentals of the technique, the instrumentation and the data that it provides before going on to discuss optimal solvent selection and sample preparation. This is followed by a detailed study of each of the important classes of protons, breaking the spectrum up into regions (exchangeables, aromatics, heterocyclics, alkenes etc.). This is followed by consideration of the phenomena that we know can leave chemists struggling; chiral centres, restricted rotation, anisotropy, accidental equivalence, non-first-order spectra etc. Having explained the potential pitfalls that await the unwary, the book then goes on to devote chapters to the chemical techniques and the most useful instrumental ones that can be employed to combat them. A discussion is then presented on carbon-13 NMR, detailing its pros and cons and showing how it can be used in conjunction with proton NMR via the pivotal 2-D techniques (HSQC and HMBC) to yield vital structural information. Some of the more specialist techniques available are then discussed, i.e. flow NMR, solvent suppression, Magic Angle Spinning, etc. Other important nuclei are then discussed and useful data supplied. This is followed by a discussion of the neglected use of NMR as a tool for quantification and new techniques for this explained. The book then considers the safety aspects of NMR spectroscopy, reviewing NMR software for spectral prediction and data handling and concludes with a set of worked Q&As.

Book Practical Skills in Chemistry

Download or read book Practical Skills in Chemistry written by John Dean and published by Pearson Higher Ed. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical skills form the cornerstone of chemistry. However, the diversity of skills required in the laboratory means that a student’s experience may be limited. While some techniques do require specific skills, many of them are transferable generic skills that are required throughout the subject area. Limited time constraints of the modern curriculum often preclude or minimise laboratory time. Practical Skills in Chemistry 3rd edition provides a general guidance for use in and out of practical sessions, covering a range of techniques from the basic to the more advanced. This ‘one-stop’ text will guide you through the wide range of practical, analytical and data handling skills that you will need during your studies. It will also give you a solid grounding in wider transferable skills such as teamwork, using information technology, communicating information and study skills. This edition has been enhanced and updated throughout to provide a complete and easy-to-read guide to the developing skills required from your first day through to graduation, further strengthening its reputation as the practical resource for students of chemistry and related discipline areas.

Book Practical Inorganic Chemistry

Download or read book Practical Inorganic Chemistry written by G. Pass and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In revising the text opportunity has been taken to introduce SI units throughout. An Appendix has been included which contains tables of SI units and a table of conversion factors for use when consulting data in non-SI units. Chapter 19 now includes experiments demon strating the use of ion-exchange and solid-liquid chromatography_ Exercises involving colorimetry have been included in Chapter 17. These techniques are introduced as part of a complementary exercise where their relevance is seen as part of a complete piece of work. Minor improvements have been made to some of the experimental procedures and we are grateful to those who have made helpful suggestions in this respect. G. PASS H. SUTCLIFFE iii Preface to the First Edition The student of inorganic chemistry is fortunate in having a wide choice of textbooks covering the descriptive and theoretical aspects of the sUbject. There is no comparable choice of textbooks covering practical inorganic chemistry. Moreover, there is a tendency for many students to draw an unfortunate distinction between chemistry taught in the lecture room, and laboratory work. Consideration of these points prompted the preparation of this book, in which we have attempted to emphasize the relationship between theory and practice.

Book Industrial Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Industrial Organic Chemistry written by Klaus Weissermel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 481 pages.
