Book Introducing English Grammar

Download or read book Introducing English Grammar written by Kersti Borjars and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Answering key questions such as 'Why study grammar?' and 'What is standard English?', Introducing English Grammar guides readers through the practical analysis of the syntax of English sentences. With all special terms carefully explained as they are introduced, the book is written for readers with no previous experience of grammatical analysis. It is ideal for all those beginning their study of linguistics, English language or speech pathology, as well as students with primarily literary interests who need to cover the basics of linguistic analysis. The approach taken is in line with current research in grammar, a particular advantage for students who may go on to study syntax in more depth. All the examples and exercises use real language taken from newspaper articles, non-standard dialects and include excerpts from studies of patients with language difficulties. Students are encouraged to think about the terminology as a tool kit for studying language and to test what can and cannot be described using these tools. This new edition has been fully revised in line with recent research. There is a new chapter on World English, a new glossary and a free website with extensive further reading and answers to the exercises.

Book Analysing English Grammar

Download or read book Analysing English Grammar written by Lise Fontaine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical step-by-step introduction to the analysis of English grammar, this book leaves the reader confident to tackle the challenges analysing grammar may pose. The first textbook to take an integrated approach to function and structure in grammatical analysis, it allows students to build experience, skills and confidence in working with grammar. The innovative, hybrid approach combines an introduction to systemic functional theory with a solid grounding in grammatical structure. The book approaches grammar in an incremental way, enabling students to develop grammatical skill in stages. It is of particular value to those starting to work with functional grammar but it is also relevant for experienced readers who are interested in developing a more systematic approach to grammatical analysis.

Book The Structure of Language

Download or read book The Structure of Language written by Emma L. Pavey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the time we communicate using language without considering the complex activity we are undertaking, forming words and sentences in a split second. This book introduces the analysis of language structure, combining both description and theory within a single, practical text. It begins by examining words and parts of words, and then looks at how words work together to form sentences that communicate meaning. Sentence patterns across languages are also studied, looking at the similarities and the differences we find in how languages communicate meaning. The book also discusses how context can affect how we structure our sentences: the context of a particular language and its structures, the context of old and new information for us and our addressee(s), and the context of our culture.

Book Introducing Electronic Text Analysis

Download or read book Introducing Electronic Text Analysis written by Svenja Adolphs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing Electronic Text Analysis is a practical and much needed introduction to corpora – bodies of linguistic data. Written specifically for students studying this topic for the first time, the book begins with a discussion of the underlying principles of electronic text analysis. It then examines how these corpora enhance our understanding of literary and non-literary works. In the first section the author introduces the concepts of concordance and lexical frequency, concepts which are then applied to a range of areas of language study. Key areas examined are the use of on-line corpora to complement traditional stylistic analysis, and the ways in which methods such as concordance and frequency counts can reveal a particular ideology within a text. Presenting an accessible and thorough understanding of the underlying principles of electronic text analysis, the book contains abundant illustrative examples and a glossary with definitions of main concepts. It will also be supported by a companion website with links to on-line corpora so that students can apply their knowledge to further study. Book The Art of Grammar

Download or read book The Art of Grammar written by Aleksandr Aĭkhenvalʹd and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the principles and practice of writing a comprehensive reference grammar. Several thousand distinct languages are currently spoken across the globe, each with its own grammatical system and its own selection of diverse grammatical structures. Comprehensive reference grammars offer a basis for understanding linguistic diversity and can provide a unique perspective into the structure and social and cognitive underpinnings of different languages. Alexandra Aikhenvald describes the means of collecting, analysing, and organizing data for use in this type of grammar, and discusses the typological parameters that can be used to explore relationships with other languages. She considers how a grammar can made to reflect and bring to life the society of its speakers through background explanation and the judicious choice of examples, as well as by showing how its language, history, and culture are intertwined. She ends with a full glossary of terms and guidance for those wanting to explore a particular linguistic phenomenon or language family. The Art of Grammar is the ideal resource for students and teachers of linguistics, language studies, and inductively-oriented linguistic, cultural, and social anthropology.

Book Cognitive Grammar in Stylistics

Download or read book Cognitive Grammar in Stylistics written by Marcello Giovanelli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive Grammar in Stylistics: A Practical Guide provides an engaging, accessible and practically-focused introduction to cognitive grammar outlining how central principles of the field can be used in stylistic analyses. Assuming no prior knowledge, the book leads students through the basics of cognitive grammar, outlining its place within the field of cognitive linguistics as a whole, providing clear explanations of key principles and concepts. It then explains how these can be used to study a range of literary and non-literary texts. The book argues that cognitive grammar offers a powerful alternative to more traditional grammatical models when analysing texts. Its primary focus is on the practical application of cognitive grammar to examples of language in context and on its potential for both literary and non-literary material. It offers a clear and facilitating approach to allow students to describe language features carefully and to explore how these descriptions can be developed into full and rich analyses. Suitable for undergraduate students taking modules in stylistics, English language, and cognitive linguistics, as well as postgraduates encountering the field for the first time, the book provides a much-needed and essential guide to this exciting subject.

Book Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis

Download or read book Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis written by Howard Leslie Lunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis "Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis" is a revision and an enlargement of the author's former work, entitled "A Study of the English Sentence," which was published in 1895. In this work was printed for the first time a new method of written (visual) sentence analysis, designed as a substitute for the defective "diagram system" then in vogue. Since that time the writer has taught his scheme of combined oral and written analysis of the English sentence to many classes of pupils and teachers, who have voluntarily given personal testimony to its practical value. The memory of these words of commendation has furnished, for the most part, the author's main motive for organizing in a textbook the results of his past experiences in studying and teaching the functional elements of the English sentence. In no sense is this work to be regarded as a substitute for a textbook on English Grammar, but rather as a supplement to almost any grammar that would serve as a reference book for rules, principles, and definitions. It must be acknowledged that much of the teaching of English grammar has had to do with the recognition and classification of the Parts of Speech, and that no sufficient attention has been given to the classification of unit elements according to their special functions. The importance of sentence analysis has been noted by the New York Board of Regents in an "English Syllabus" in the following terms: "To help the pupil to develop the 'sentence sense' and to grasp the thought of difficult sentences, much of the time given to the study of grammar should be spent in the analysis of sentences just within the limit of his mental ability, such analysis consisting of rapid drill in syntax of words, phrases, and clauses." Book Analyzing the Grammar of English

Download or read book Analyzing the Grammar of English written by Richard V. Teschner and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the Grammar of English offers a descriptive analysis of the indispensable elements of English grammar. Designed to be covered in one semester, this textbook starts from scratch and takes nothing for granted beyond a reading and speaking knowledge of English. Extensively revised to function better in skills-building classes, it includes more interspersed exercises that promptly test what is taught, simplified and clarified explanations, greatly expanded and more diverse activities, and a new glossary of over 200 technical terms. Analyzing the Grammar of English is the only English grammar to view the sentence as a strictly punctuational construct—anything that begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, a question mark, an exclamation mark, or three dots—rather than a syntactic one, and to load, in consequence, all the necessary syntactic analysis onto the clause and its constituents. It is also one of the very few English grammars to include—alongside multiple examples of canonical or "standard" language—occasional samples of stigmatized speech to illustrate grammar points. Students and teachers in courses of English grammatical analysis, English teaching methods, TESOL methods, and developmental English will all benefit from this new edition.
