Book Guide to French Pronunciation and Practical Phonetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guide to French Pronunciation and Practical Phonetics Classic Reprint written by Philippe De La Rochelle and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to French Pronunciation and Practical Phonetics For the past few years special attention has been paid to the study of Phonetics for two reasons: (1) It is impossible to speak good French or to acquire a pure accent without studying in detail that part of the Grammar which treats of sounds and articulations. (2) We cannot expect a pupil opening a French Grammar for the first time to Read a word. Consequently in writing the following pages, the pupil who has no teacher has been constantly kept in view. A practical survey of the French sounds may prevent students from groping in the dark or depending exclusively on their teachers in preparing their next lesson. Furthermore, we know that students can acquire French in America as well as in France, provided they are well grounded. Pupils properly trained have no difficulty in enjoying good French spoken or in interpreting the plays at any French theatre. It has been demonstrated that by following the directions set forth in this framework, much drudgery may be avoided and interest awakened for further pursuit. We extend our grateful appreciation to Dr. Hugo A. Rennert, Director of the French Department of the University of Pennsylvania, for his valuable suggestions, also to Dr. J. P. W. Crawford. Book First Principles of French Pronunciation Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Principles of French Pronunciation Classic Reprint written by Emile Saillens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of French Pronunciation This book is for English-speaking people. It has a three fold object. First, it should serve those general readers or speakers of French whose feeling for the language is such that they will not rest content with a mere rough-and-ready approximation to the way in which it is pronounced by Frenchmen. Secondly, its concern is with teachers and their pupils already devoted to the direct method of modem-language study, as also with those who are liberal enough to give that method a trial. Thirdly, it may furnish a handy epitome of its subject for academic students of French, whose needs must be met more in detail by the advanced investigations of the recognized specialists, and particularly those native to the language. Book French Pronunciation

Download or read book French Pronunciation written by James Geddes and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Pronunciation: Principles and Practice and a Summary of Usage in Writing and Printing The path of any one undertaking to furnish a guide to French pronunciation is a thorny one. Nevertheless, despite this fact and the thanklessness of the task, the subject receives, in a variety of forms, some attention annually. Most of this attention is of the obligatory kind and is found in the opening chapter of almost every French grammar that appears. Such treatment, While necessarily concise and brief and generally well adapted to the purpose in view, of introducing the student to the subject, hardly ever goes beyond that goal. Besides the grammars, there are quite a few manuals, or treatises, on pronunciation that appear from time to time, and in their way are helpful to the serious student of the subject, no matter how objectionable he may consider many features in such works. Lastly there are the recent dictionaries, in most Of which the most cursory examination reveals an amount of attention given to the subject of pronuncia tion proportionate to the very considerable interest there in manifested of late years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical French Phonetics This book aims to help students of French to overcome the difficulties which confront them when they try to acquire a correct pronunciation of that language. It is the result of many years' successful experience in teaching phonetics to American students. The author is thoroughly familiar with the difficulties of pronunciation which they encounter, and understands how to lead them to acquire a good French accent. The book discusses the principles of voice production, illustrates by means of two cuts the organs of speech, and gives the exact position of these organs in making each French sound. It devotes a chapter to the vowels and one to consonants, giving the phonetic symbol for each sound with a paragraph explaining its use. One chapter is devoted entirely to daily exercises for the pupil's practice. Another is given to phonetic transcription of French stories and poems, the same piece of literature being presented in two columns, side by side, one in the regular Roman print and the other in the phonetic alphabet. The vocabulary at the end furnishes the student with the meaning of every French word and idiom occurring in the chapter on phonetic transcription.
