Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Ship Production The purpose of this book is to present in convenient form the most important general principles of ship design, with which every naval architect should be familiar, and to describe the various processes in connection with the building of ships. Its nature is intended to be practical rather than theoretical, it being assumed that the principal problem with which the reader is concerned is the quick production of seagoing vessels from plans already in existence rather than the preparation of new plans. The recent unprecedented increase in shipbuilding in the United States has resulted in a corresponding demand for workmen, draftsmen, and naval architects. It has therefore become necessary for many engineers and technical men, who have never before been confronted with shipbuilding problems, to transfer their activities from the fields of the various other engineering professions to those of the marine engineer and naval architect. These men are familiar with mechanical processes and have the necessary groundwork in theoretical and applied mathematics to fit them for duties in connection with the production of ships, but lack familiarity with those matters that are peculiar to shipbuilding. It is hoped that this book may aid in furnishing, in compact form, some of the more essential parts of this information. It should also be of value to workmen in shipyards who have only such knowledge of the shipbuilding industry as they have gained from practical experience, and who desire to fit themselves for higher positions. It is manifestly impossible to include in a single volume even a most cursory treatment of all the subjects that are involved in the profession of naval architecture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Ship Building: Theoretical and Practical IN offering this work on ship-building to officers of the naval service and to others of my profession, the author has no apology to make for its production. Information on this subject has been sought from every available source, with a view of rendering this work useful for the purposes of elementary instruction as well as to the practical builder. The result of the undertaking is hum bly submitted, trusting that it will meet with indulgence for such faults as it may contain. The First Division has been compiled chiefly from Rankine's ship-building, Theoretical and Practical. Credit for articles taken from other authors is given in foot-notes. The Second Division is based upon the actual practice of the public and private ship-yards of this country but the treatises on this subject, of Rankine, Scott Russell, Knowles, and Fin cham have been freely used and portions incorporated whenever it seemed desirable to do so. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Practical Shipbuilding: With a Glossary of Terms This handbook on the practical construction of a modern standard cargo steamer has been written in answer to some of the many questions which from time to time have been asked by men who have been working under the supervision of the writer, and is intended to fill the need for a guide to the new men starting in ship yard work. During many years' experience in shipyards on all types of marine construction from the smallest of torpedo boats of years ago to the mighty war vessels and mer chant ships of to-day the writer has been associated with the men who are to-day supervising the wonderful ship building program ou which this country is engaged, and he has endeavored to embody the results of this more than twenty years' experience in the book. In the present struggle on land and sea, when every one must use all his might, this manual of the necessary steps in fabricating and assembling of vessels has been prepared with the hope that it will prove a help to some of the many thousand men who must come into this industry from other trades. Book How Wooden Ships Are Built

Download or read book How Wooden Ships Are Built written by H. Cole Estep and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Wooden Ships Are Built: A Practical Treatise on Modern American Wooden Ship Construction With a Supplement on Laying Off Wooden Vessels It is to assist in this important work of training that this book is offered. In other words, the book has been prepared to meet a war emergency and it is hoped the information it contains is of practical value. Most of the material appeared originally in a series of articles published in the marine review between june, 1917, and March, 1918. The entire text, however, has been carefully revised and brought down to date. The illustrations, which the publisher believes form perhaps the most valuable feature of the volume, have been carefully selected. Over 150 of the original photographs were made personally bythe author expressly for this work. They were taken with the sole purpose of showing clearly and accurately how modern wooden ships actually are constructed. The aim in every case was to present important details of construction rather than general. Views. To obtain the photographs and collect the material for this work the author traveled extensively and visited nearly all of the important wooden shipyards in the United States. An effort has been made to produce a book that is practical and illustrative and one that also reflects current American practice-accurately. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shipbuilding in Iron and Steel: A Practical Treatise, Giving Full Details of Construction, Processes of Manufacture, and Building Arrangements MY principal object in writing this book has been to furnish to shipbuilders, and to shipbuilding officers of all grades, fuller information respecting the details of ship construction in iron and steel than any previous work records. In the body of the book I have borne repeated testimony to the merits of the existing writings of Mr. Grantham, Mr. Scott Russell, Dr. Fairbairn, Professor Rankine, and others; but none of these either gives, or professes to give, that copious detailed information of which those who have to superintend the practical operations of shipbuilding, and even cultivated workmen, have often felt the want. He has printed the following Outline under the hope that it will prove useful to both Establishments to the former, as afl'ording some little assistance in overcoming the first steps in the practical part of their profession; and to the latter, as containing probably sufficient for their present information. In the first part, he has explained the general connexion of the several principal parts of a ship, from the keel upwards. Secondly, he has entered somewhat more at large into the de scription of the different timbers which compose the vaxious parts, and the manner. In which they are put together and fastened, both in the old and new modes of building. And lastly, he has added a short Vocabulary of the principal English terms used in ship-building, together with the corresponding terms in other languages, which last he has thought may prove useful to oflicers on foreign stations. Download or read book Shipbuilding and Shipping Record Vol 11 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shipbuilding and Shipping Record, Vol. 11: March 28, 1918 This discussion on local failure brings up the question of secondary bracing. Certain girders and stringers require brackets in order to prevent collapse from oblique loading it is not an easy matter for-any form of calculation, but a close study of actual experience should produce rules for general guidance. Construction of double bottom - Even the most enlightened naval architects appear 'to have only hazy ideas concerning the structural work performed by the complicated double bottom, which is now a common feature in merchant ships. The more general practice is to dispose the internal framing in the transverse direction, retain ing a very small amount of longitudinal material mainly for local support. These longitudinal intercostal members also fulfil some function as secondary bracing, but the nature of the work performed is very obscure. It is, of course, true that facility of erection has favoured transverse framing but here, again, if economy of weight is required, Search must be made for a distribution which is more in the longitudinal sense than the present practice. Some well known efforts have already been made towards this aim, but the final solution has yet to be sought. Download or read book Ship Building in Iron and Wood Classic Reprint written by Andrew Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ship-Building in Iron and Wood The question, however, whether ships with broadside guns, or ships with Captain Goles's revolving turrets, are to be preferred, still remains unsettled. It will perhaps be found that each of these classes will prove useful in a sphere of its own, and that what ever success may attend Captain Coles's ships, a considerable, if not the largest portion of our future fleet, must still consist of ships with broadside guns. It has been assumed by the advocates of turret ships, in their arguments in their favour, that in revolving turrets alone can guns of very large calibre be used; but it is submitted that this is not necessarily the case if the guns in the broadside of a ship be placed on a traversing platform worked by mechanical appliances; and it may be remarked, that though guns worked on board ship in the way here suggested might not each have individually the same extent of angular traverse as the guns in revolving turrets, yet as all screw ships have to some degree, by judicious management of the helm and the screw, the power of revolving almost on their own axis without going ahead, this objection is very much obviated. It must not be forgotten, also, that the ship to carry a turret, to prevent her being sunk or set on fire, must be as thoroughly protected as the ship to carry broadside guns and though possibly she may be built with her sides of a less height out of the water, yet for a sea-going vessel this advantage has many counter balancing evils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ship-Builders Complete Guide: Comprehending the Theory and Practice of Naval Architecture, With Its Modern Improvements The navy of England does not date its origin prior to the time of our Saxon ancestors. It is now, however, the best defence for our sea girt shores. The navy may indeed be considered as the natural strength of the British empire, nor need we apprehend any danger from foreign invasion while Britain retains the sovereignty of the seas. To ensure this important desideratum, the art of ship-building must receive that assistance from theoretical science, without which, foreign navies will ultimately excel us on our own peculiar element. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handbook of Iron Shipbuilding The author being aware of the generally expressed want in all books published on the subject of Iron Shipbuilding - in many of which the theory of the lines, displacement, &c., are treated as if for the especial benefit of a Senior Wrangler at Cambridge, and utterly useless to the Shipbuilder and others, as the practical part is either very slightly touched upon, or entirely ignored - wishes to supply this void, without entering into theoretical investigations, which when written are seldom or never read. He has, during a long and varied experience, extending over twenty years in different parts of the United Kingdom, been at great pains to include in bis notes such information as is really useful, carefully eliminating what has been, during the rapid advance of the science of Shipbuilding, shown to be superfluous or obsolete. He has constantly kept in view two objects: - Firstly. To make this a useful handbook for the Shipowner, not only regarding the construction of a vessel, but also as to the cost of work in all the great centres of the shipbuilding trade in the United Kingdom.
