Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical d104-Book of Plant Physiology The extension of knowledge in all departments of botany during the last few years has widened the application of the principles of physiology; and altered the relative importance of many phases of the subject. The most notable development consists of the universal recognition of the underlying and basal importance of the irritability of the organism; "that there is no vital process which is uninfluenced by stimuli, which permit, cause, restrict, or regulate the particular action in question." A second conception of no less importance is that of the intricate correlation existing between all of the activities of the vegetal organism, and the reciprocal interaction of all physiological stimuli. The arrangement of the subject in the following pages is an effort to place before the student a method by which a working knowledge of the physiological complex of the plant may be acquired. The disposition of the subject matter entailed by this treatment consists, briefly stated, in the study of the particular functions and properties of the organism, in connection with the agencies and forces which influence or initiate them, and a consideration of the general processes of plant life. To this end the first portion of the book, inclusive of chapters I. - VII., is devoted chiefly to the special forms of irritability exhibited by typical organisms, and the second part is taken up with a more critical consideration of the broader phases of the activity of the plant: a treatment of the subject well adapted to the convenience of the independent worker, and to the exigencies of instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Plant Physiology I have purposely made no attempt to give directions for experiments, believing that a laboratory manual and a text book must meet such different needs that the style of the one is impossible for the other.. This book must, however, be supplemented by actual laboratory work by the reader, under the guidance of a teacher or of some of the laboratory manuals mentioned on page 27, or both. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Plant Physiology: An Introduction To Original Research For Students And Teachers Of Natural Science, Medicine, Agriculture And Forestry In this book I have set before myself the task of advancing to the best of my ability the study of Plant Physiology. The Practical Plant Physiology, however, is by no means exclusively intended for the use of students. I trust that it may be welcome also to many teachers iu higher grade schools. For many reasons Botany forms a particularly suitable subject of study for schools, and a series of physiological experiments not only gives a very special interest to the teaching of Botany, but also enhances its importance as a means of mental development. Book Practical Plant Biology

Download or read book Practical Plant Biology written by Henry H. Dixon and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Plant Biology: A Course of Elementary Lectures on the General Morphology and Physiology of Plants This book consist of a series of thirty lectures designed as an Introductory Course in Botany for Medical and other Science Students. Practical work is outlined to illustrate each lecture. At the outset the use of the microscope is treated, and special consideration is given to microscopic measurement and to the reconstruction of microscopic objects in the solid. The plants chosen as subjects of study are necessarily limited in number. They have been selected, as fairly representing some of the more important subdivisions of the vegetable kingdom, and as being, at the same time, easy to procure. Attention is directed only to those points of their structure, life, history, and manner of living which are necessary in order that the student should appreciate some of the general principles of morphology, physiology, and evolution. The lectures deal first with the simpler forms, among which are to be found some of the most important so far as general biology is concerned. They then pass on to the more complicated, and gradually lead the student to some knowledge of the development, structure, and physiology of the higher plants. Book Experimental Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Experimental Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by D. T. Macdougal and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Plant Physiology The appreciation shown toward the translation of Oels' Pflanzenphysiologische Versuche prepared by the present writer, together with the comments and suggestions from laboratories in which it has been used, has led to the preparation of this manual, which it is hoped will conform somewhat more nearly to the needs of American students. The general form of Oels' manual has been retained, and many cuts from the translation and a few paragraphs of the text have been repeated here without indication of their origin. Only the more important and better established portions of the subject are treated, and these in the manner already in general use. With the rapid advance of investigation it is next to impossible that an elementary' laboratory manual should include the latest results, especially when the essential points of many of them may yet be in controversy and need the critical treatment which is certainly not within the province of a work of this character. In the hands of an instructor in touch with current botanical thought, such deficiencies are easily supplied. In the interests of precision, the term "assimilation" is here used exclusively to denote a general function of protoplasm, while the term "photosynthesis," which was introduced into the translation of Oels' manual (Preface and page 30), is adopted to signify the special process of forming carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight. The author is indebted to Mr. R. N. Day and Miss J. E. Tilden for the demonstration and drawing for Figure 32. Book Practical Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Botany Classic Reprint written by F. Cavers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Botany This book may be described as an elementary practical handbook of Vegetable Histology and Physiology, containing in addition a short course of practical work on selected types of Cryptogams and Grymnosperms. It is divisible into three sections, namely, (1) Histology - Chapters I. to III., (2) Physiology - Chapters IV. to VII., and (3) Life Histories - Chapters VIII. to XII. In the first section (Histology), I have exercised special care in giving clear and practical directions for microscopic work. Chapter I. is devoted to this purpose and to general instructions regarding the fixation and preservation of material, the cutting of sections, the application of reagents, and other practical matters. In Chapter II. I have worked out a plan which has proved thoroughly satisfactory in practice. In my opinion, no candidate should be allowed to pass in Botany at such examinations as the Intermediate Science and Arts of London University unless able to produce satisfactory proof of having worked through a practical course in Organic Chemistry. Until examining bodies insist upon this, the teacher of Botany must include in his course a few lessons on the Biochemistry of plants. The student ought to know something more about proteins, for instance, than that they contain nitrogen and are coloured brown by iodine solution! Download or read book A Textbook of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Nikolai Aleksandrovich Maximov and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Plant Physiology Plant physiology is an inseparable part of botany. It is closely connected with the study of morphology and anatomy of plants, since without a sufficient knowledge of plant structure an effective study of physiology is hardly possible. Recently plant physiology has been forming connections not only with plant ecology and plant geography but also with taxonomy. Plant physiology is passing gradually from the study of activities common to all plants to a consideration of the physiological distinctions that exist between various groups or even species. Download or read book Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Vladimir Ivanovich Palladin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology The German edition of this book has gained many friends in institutions where plant physiology is taught and has supplied a need for elementary students not otherwise met. Its small size, together with its generally excellent arrange ment and manner of presentation render it very well suited to the use of begin ning students who really desire to obtain a general grasp of the subject in a comparatively short time. Its brevity, its conciseness and the readableness of its story are its first attractions, but a further examination reveals the facts that Palladin has been exceptionally thorough in much of his treatment, and that a wealth of well-chosen citations from the literature of plant physiology places in the reader's hands a ready guide to original sources. In the latter regard the text-books originating in our own language are usually deficient, thereby depriv ing the student of one of his most important rights at the very start - the right to appreciate that the key to the science he is entering really lies' in its literature, contributed to by many hundreds of serious workers writing in many languages. Book Practical Plant Physiology

Download or read book Practical Plant Physiology written by Frederick Keeble and published by White Press. This book was released on 1911 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1910, "Practical Plant Physiology" is an accessible guide to elementary botany. Originally designed for students and teachers, it offers an introductory outline of the experiments and experimental methods used in botany and plant investigation, as well as other useful information related to the subject. This volume will be of considerable utility to those with an interest in plants and botany, and it would make for a fantastic addition to collections of allied literature. Contents include: "The Problem of Plant-Physiology and the Method by which They are to be Solved", "Germination", "The Mode of Germination of Seeds", "The Parts of the Seed and Seedling", "The Resting and Active States of Seeds", "The Food-Materials of Seeds", "Changes During Germination", etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction on botany.

Book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Oran Raber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Plant Physiology During the past five years since the first edition of this book appeared, it has met with more favor in the eyes of teachers and students of the subject than the author (or the publishers) had anticipated even in the most sanguine moments. But during those five years much phytophysiological water has passed under the botanical bridge. Once again has come the task of deciding what matter shall be included and what shall not. There is also the question of maintaining the book within a reasonable size. N o self-respecting student can be expected to carry an elementary book of more than 500 pages. Most gospels are small; but revisions have a tendency to get bigger and (let us hope) better. An elementary text should be up to date and yet not con tain many disputable data. However, if one included in a text book only those facts to which every plant physiologist subscribed wholeheartedly all of the time, the author would finish with a mere pamphlet. A happy medium must be sought. Whether the teacher professor who reads this will think this golden mean has here been attained, will depend upon his personal predilections and the number of fields in which he is not a specialist. So in this, as in the previous edition, there has been an attempt to hold as much as possible to the essentials of a general, elementary course, bearing in mind that this elementary course may be pre paring the student for courses in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry; for more advanced courses in plant physiology; or for a more appreciative life in the nonprofessional world.
