Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Histology and Pathology Histology, or the minute anatomy of healthy tissue as revealed by the microscope, has made vast strides in' the last few years, and now forms a most important part of Medical education; a thorough knowledge of the normal structure of the animal tissues being absolutely necessary for the appreciation of pathological change. This subject is now taught at the Medical schools, and there is no excuse for a student who has finished his curriculum without some knowledge of practical histology, and of the minute anatomy of the human body. There are many, however, who qualified some years ago, when little attention Was paid to this subject, who have consequently no practical knowledge of the methods required to prepare any morbid growth they may meet with in their professional career, or how to set about a microscopical examination of the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pathology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners The plan adopted is to follow the tissue from the body to the microscope, to describe the method of making the post-mortem and naked-eye examinations, and of preparing the various structures for microscopic investigation: The more important changes of each organ are indicated, though all the changes which occur could not possibly be considered in the Space at command. In all cases the aim has been to describe at least the more, important typical lesions. In as many instances as possible, illustrations, which are not mere diagrams, are added. Most of the original Drawings have been made from Sections prepared in the course of the work of the Edinburgh University Practical Pathology Class. They may therefore be accepted as representing as faithfully as possible the appearances which may be recognised by any normally intelligent and dexterous student. The copied Drawings, taken from the best sources, are, as far as possible, acknowledged in the descriptions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pathological Technique: A Practical Manual for Workers in Pathological Histology This book is designed especially for practical use in pathological laboratories, both as a guide to beginners and as a source of reference for the advanced. We believe that the book will also meet the wants of practitioners who have more or less opportunity to do general pathological work. Every autopsy presents for solution a problem which may be simple or complex. The known quantities are certain clinical symptoms and physical signs; the unknown quantities arc not only the gross and microscopic lesions that may or may not have given rise to the symptoms and signs, but also the etiology of the lesions and the order of their sequence. The solution of the problem often requires the highest skill in post-mortem, bacteriological, and histological technique, but in its solution lies the fascination of pathological work. It has seemed advisable to us to present, so far as possible, a consecutive statement of the methods employed in solving the various problems that arise, so as to avoid the repetitions that necessarily occur when the three usual divisions of the subject are separately considered by different writers. Download or read book A Text Book of Pathology Vol 1 written by David James Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Pathology, Vol. 1: Systematic and Practical Aberdeen University, it unavoidably fell into abeyance for a con siderable period. On resuming it, I felt that the system at first adopted was calculated to give too narrow a view of what has now become a very wide and important science; and I accordingly destroyed the early manuscript and remodelled the whole ab initio. It will, I think, be granted that the Pathology of to-day is not delimitable merely as a matter of pure morbid anatomy, pathological histology, pathological physiology, pathological chemistry, or clinical medicine; but that these are simply the members of a great body, and that they are indissolubly band together. All pathologists of renown, at home and sinned, hare served a lengthy apprenticeship in morbid anatomy prior to their becoming exponents of the science of disease. And, for that matter, the continuance in after life of daily observatim in the post-mortem theatre is as essential to the pathologist as digital study is to the physician, seeing that it is here that subjects {or further inquiry suggest themselves. Book Clinical Pathology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Clinical Pathology Classic Reprint written by P. N. Panton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histology and Pathology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners It is the purpose of this work to present all the essential facts relating to the normal histology and the pathological anatomy and histology of man in a systematic and concise way. In subjects so well established as these, originality of data is little to be expected, and the chief object to be aimed at is arrangement and treatment of the subject in a manner convenient and clear to students and practitioners of medicine, for whom this treatise is intended. It is attempted to present the subject up to the most recent discoveries and developments, avoiding points unsettled and in doubt. The part on normal histology is written entirely by Dr. Nichols, that on pathology entirely by Dr. Yale. Each is fully responsible for the statements in his own part, and for those only. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pathology: A Manual of Autopsy and Laboratory Technique for Students and Physicians The first edition of this book, in spite of numerous typographic errors beyond the control of the writer, was very soon exhausted. An apology is due the many, to whom, during the last ten years, a new edition has been repeatedly promised. The writers only excuse for the failure to fulfill these promises has been the pressure of other work that has prevented such fulfillment. In the final accomplishment of these promises the book has been practically rewritten and more than doubled in size. The autopsy method given in the main text is a composite one, made up from the Rokitansky, Virchow, Chiari and Nauwerck methods, according to the judgment of the writer as to what was the best in these, and put together with modifications and additions arising out of his own experience. The aim has been to offer a method by which an autopsy can be performed with the greatest speed and ease, and at the same time with the greatest completeness, the various steps of the operation following in logical order in such a way that nothing can be lost or destroyed, and thereby revealing a complete picture of the pathologic conditions present. A choice of methods is offered whenever the aims of the examination may be so varied as to make variations in method advantageous. The general order of the autopsy is the same as that given in the Protocol Blank-book, the present book being designed as a guide and reference-book for that. The points to be noted in the examination of each region are given in connection with the method of examination of that region, and represent the condensed special pathology of the latter. This should be of great service to the beginner in autopsy work, as affording a concise but complete guide to the most important conditions of each region. A text-book on Special Pathology should be used as a reference book in connection with these condensed statements of special pathology. The technical methods for microscopic examination given in Part II have been brought up to date, and all recent methods of value included. Original methods have been given in preference to modifications; the latter, when of value, are also mentioned. As a rule that method has been chosen which in the light of the writers laboratory experience has yielded uniform the best results. Download or read book Practical Histology Classic Reprint written by J. N. Langley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Histology This book has had its origin, on the one hand in the directions for practical work which I have had printed these twenty years for the guidance of students attending my course of Practical Histology, and on the other hand, in the directions and descriptions for elementary students which I have from time to time inserted in the Practical Physiology and Histology of Professor Sir M. Foster and myself. The histological account given in the last Edition of the Practical Physiology and Histology has been, in large part, transferred to this book with such modifications as seemed necessary; and the more advanced work has been added to it. The methods which I have tried, I have generally taken from the original sources. But I have not always done this, since in a work of this kind the Authors' names can rarely be given with advantage to the student. Book The Elements of Pathological Histology

Download or read book The Elements of Pathological Histology written by Anton Weichselbaum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Pathological Histology: With Special Reference to Practical Methods The chief object which I had in view in preparing the present volume was to provide the tyro in the study of Pathological Histology with a guide for his work in which he might find, given concisely and briefly, not only the doctrines of the science, but also the most useful and practical methods for its investigation. As I considered it essential to include pathogenesis and etiology in the descriptions, at least so far as their discovery depends on microscopic investigation, it was necessary for me, if the dimensions of the book were not to be unduly large, on the one hand to restrict myself in my choice of material to the relation of the more important facts, leaving unnoticed all points which are of secondary moment or not yet sufficiently well-ascertained, and on the other hand to use the greatest possible brevity of expression. On the same grounds I have also omitted references to the literature and the names of authorities. But whilst on the one hand I have been sparing of letterpress, on the other I have been the more liberal in the insertion of figures, being of opinion that suitably-chosen illustrations produce a clear conception of facts much more quickly and certainly than even the most accurate description. In the execution of the drawings all diagrammatic representation has been carefully avoided, and attention rather paid to reproducing the actual conditions with the greatest possible fidelity.
