Book Practical Histochemistry

Download or read book Practical Histochemistry written by J. Chayen and published by . This book was released on 1991-08-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Histochemistry Second Edition J. Chayen and L. Bitensky Unit of Cellular Pharmacology and Toxicology, Robens Institute, University of Surrey, UK Whereas in the past histochemistry has been primarily a way of colouring cells and tissue sections, over the last fifteen years it has evolved into a precise and quantitative form of microbiochemistry. New techniques and reagents have been developed which now form the basis of such diverse procedures as highly sensitive bioassays of polypeptides and the monitoring of open heart surgery and heart transplantation. Cell function is left unimpaired by ‘hidden reagents’ which do not release their active moieties until triggered by the products of biochemical reactions, and new methods prevent the loss of soluble active groups from cells and tissues even during prolonged reaction times. The second edition of this highly successful book has been extensively revised and updated to give an authoritative and practical account of the techniques of traditional and modern histochemistry. It conveys the sense of excitement that has been generated in developing a rigorous biochemistry that can be performed at the cellular level within a tissue.

Download or read book Histochemistry written by Richard W. Horobin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histochemistry: An Explanatory Outline of Histochemistry and Biophysical Staining describes the histochemical staining of cells and tissues as a major tool applied in biological and medical investigations, both in basic research and in practical applications such as clinical diagnosis. The book may be considered as a guide to understanding the scientific basis of staining procedures and alternate actions to take when common methods do not proceed as expected. The first chapter gives general theoretical ideas from which most part of the book is largely organized around. As the book considers the arts and crafts making up the practice of histochemistry and biological staining, emphasis is given to the common physicochemical aspects of the technically diverse methodologies involved. Hence, the author has drawn ideas and information from physicochemically and biochemically related fields, such as chromatography, pharmacology, photography, tanning, and textile dyeing. The bulk of the book is structured around groups of practical procedures, such as fixation, staining with dyestuffs, metal impregnation, and selective extraction as a test of significance. Lastly, general essays on the usefulness of staining theories and on the problems arising from reagent impurities are given as examples. The text is suitable for students and researchers in the fields of physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. Clinical laboratory scientists and those involved in the life sciences and biotechnology will benefit from reading the book.

Download or read book Enzyme Histochemistry written by Z. Lojda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent years enzyme histochemical reactions have increasingly been considered as important, the reason being that enzyme histo chemistry is now a well-established link between morphology and bio chemistry. The development of numerous new methods and in particular the improvement of existing techniques contributed to the expansion of enzyme histochemical reactions. Today, the use of these methods allows detailed insight into molecular processes of single cells and their constituents. The selection of a suitable method for enzyme histochemical investigations needs thorough knowledge and critical evaluation of the reactions de scribed for the histochemical demonstration of enzymes and introduced in laboratory practice. Often, it is difficult for scientists primarily concerned with the application of methods and for laboratory assistants to comment on the value of an enzyme histochemical reaction. Our book will serve as a guide in this respect. It contains the most important histochemical methods for the localization of enzymes, all of which were checked by the authors themselves. These methods were often modified and frequently used for numerous different investigations of healthy and diseased organs in basic research and in routine practice.

From reviews: "Histological and Histochemical Methods is a tour de force wholly suited to the modern age of histology and Professor Kiernan has triumphed again. To cover so much ground clearly and concisely while including the justification of the underlying chemistry makes this book unique. There should not be a histology laboratory or an undergraduate library that does not own a copy." Biotechnic & Histochemistry 2016, 91(2): 145. "This book should be present on the bookshelves of every research or analysis laboratory where histology and histochemistry are routinely used, as an essential reference source of basic and practical information for scientists and technicians." European Journal of Histochemistry, 2016, vol. 60.
