Book Practical Hints on Mill Building Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Hints on Mill Building Classic Reprint written by R. James Abernathey and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Hints on Mill Building My primary object in preparing this book was to place before the mining public a distinctively flour-milling and mill-building work. This, I have thought, was needed; and in its preparation have constantly endeavored to make it plain, simple and entirely practical; and if to any extent I have, in the estimation of the reader, failed in carrying out the design, I hope that such failure will be charged up to my good intentions only, allowing one to balance the other, leaving the book free to stand on its merits exclusively, giving it credit for whatever of value it does contain. The tables on gearing, belting and shafting I have carefully prepared for this work; but much of the other general matter of a mechanical nature has been copied from good authorities, prominent among them being Chas. H. Haswell. I have preferred to give, in the main, the productions entire of these authorities, with credit, to rewriting, recompiling and putting them in as original, as they could not have been very much improved, if at all, and could not have been considered original or any more valuable than in their present shape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Mill-Wright and Miller's Guide: Illustrated by Twenty-Eight Descriptive Plates The improvements in the flour mill, like the invention of the cotton gin, apply to one of the great staples of our country; and although nearly forty years have elapsed since Mr. Evans first made his improvements known to the world in the present work, the general superiority of American mills to those even of Great Britain, is still a subject of remark by intelligent travellers. Mr. Evans, however, experienced the fate of most other meritorious inventors; the combined powers of prejudice and of in tercet deprived him of all benefit from his labours, and, like Whitney, he was compelled to depend upon other pursuits for the means of establishing himself in the world. His reward, as an inventor, was a long-continued course of ruinous litigation, and the eventual success of the powerful phalanx which was in league against him. Book Itemized Cost of Mill Building Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Itemized Cost of Mill Building Construction Classic Reprint written by Manuel Joseph Jacobs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Itemized Cost of Mill Building Construction These principles will be illustrated by special reference to a mill-building located at Lockland Ohio, and built by The James Stewart Cc., for the Philip Carey Mfg. Cc., for the manufacture of roofing. It might be mentioned that the foundation was of concrete, and that the contract for it was sub-let; therefore the description of this particular building will deal chiefly with the superstructure. While this thesis is concerned chiefly with a mill building, it is nevertheless true that the general outline and data will be applicable to all classes of construction. Book Mill Building Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mill Building Construction Classic Reprint written by H. G. Tyrrell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mill Building Construction Mill buildings differ so greatly in character and purpose that it is impossible to formulate tables of dead weights which will suit all cases. The use to which the building is to be put, its location, the character of the roof covering, the presence or absence of cranes, etc., all affect the dead weight, and generally each case must be considered individually. For most purposes of design the loads may be divided into: (1) roof loads; (2) floor loads; (3) crane loads; (4) snow and wind loads, and (5) miscellaneous loads. Roof Loads. - For making rough estimates the diagram of weights of roof trusses given in Fig. 1 will prove useful. These weights have been figured separately and do not quite agree with any of the published formulas. From this diagram, the table (Table I.) giving the weights of roof coverings and the table (Table III.) of wind and snow loads, the total weight to be carried is found. Were it possible to realize in actual practice the small sections required, the weight of trusses would be directly proportional to the load carried. Iron purlins weigh from 2 lbs. to 4 lbs. per square foot of ground covered, according to the spacing of the trusses. Good practice in the United States requires that roofs in northern latitudes shall be figured for at least 40 lbs. per square foot of roof surface. Floor Loads. - The Building Law of New York City requires that floors shall be proportioned to carry the following minimum loads per square foot: Office buildings, 100 lbs.; public halls, 120 lbs.; stores, factories, warehouses, etc., 150 lbs.; floors carrying heavy machinery, 250 lbs. to 400 lbs. In every case the floor must be strong enough to carry its maximum load. Mr. C. J. H. Woodbury, in his book on "The Fire Protection of Mills," gives a table of weights per square foot of floor of various kinds of merchandise, which is reprinted herewith (Table I.) and which will be found valuable in determining loads on floors. Crane Loads. - For small traveling cranes of one or two tons capacity it is safe to consider the total weight of one end of the crane and its load as twice the capacity of the crane. Book A Practical Treatise on Mill Gearing Wheels Shafts Riggers Etc

Download or read book A Practical Treatise on Mill Gearing Wheels Shafts Riggers Etc written by Thomas Box and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Mill-Gearing, Wheels, Shafts, Riggers, Etc: For the Use of Engineers Tm: circumstances Which have led to the preparation of the following work may be briefly explained. The author was extensively engaged for many years in the practical construction of Mill-gearing; he found the existing rules for calculating the Power of Wheels and Shafts very unsatisfactory; and as to Riggers, the only known rules are of comparatively modern date, and are given in such a form as to be almost useless for practical purposes. Under these circumstances, be was led to search for Rules and to construct Tables for his own daily use, and he now gives the results to the world. It is, perhaps, necessary to say thus much, because the rules are for the most part novel, and it may be well to explain that they have not been adopted in pursuance of any favourite theory, but are the result of the inflexible teachings of a long and varied experience. For the same reason, many examples are given of Wheels, Shafts, Riggers, in practice, that the reader may see how far the rules agree therewith; in fact about one-third of the Tables in the work are devoted to that special purpose. As many of the rules were empirical, and did not admit of a theoretical demonstration, the only course open for proving their correct ness, was by giving examples of successful application. Book Mill A Guide for the Perplexed

Download or read book Mill A Guide for the Perplexed written by Sujith Kumar and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill is best known for his moral and political writings, and is a central figure in political philosophy. However, the full ambition of his thought is often neglected in favour of an assessment based largely on contemporary liberal theorizing, while the more subtle and manifold elements of his thought remain inaccessible or incoherent to many students of his work. Mill: A Guide for the Perplexed is a clear and thorough account of Mill's thought, his major works, and the common ideas that permeate them, providing a guide to this important and complex thinker. The book introduces the key concepts and themes in Mill's social, political and moral thought, exploring his distinctive doctrines and the ideas he brings together from classical Greek thought, French positivism, Romanticism, as well as British liberalism. Geared towards the requirements of students who are familiar with the basic concepts of political theory, but unfamiliar with his work, the book serves as a clear and concise introduction to Mill's major writings.
