Book excerpt: How does Jesus, and the ancient Scriptures he held sacred, help us get our bearings in this multifarious, complicated, conflicted, and increasingly endangered planet? First, seek theological insight that can guide our practice. In "Navigating the Meanings of Being a Christian," Mark Deleaney invites us on his journey of theological reflection twenty years after his certainties were shaken by a life-changing encounter in an Indian slum. In "Evangelism in a Pluralist Society," Ross Farley applies his experience of evangelism in sensitive contexts to a careful review of evangelism in the New Testament and finds that what we call evangelism bears little relationship to the Gospel and Acts. On the subject of HIV epidemics, Greg Manning and Dave Andrews have joined the struggle to reduce HIV infection rates and witnessed the stigmatization of vulnerable people based on misapplied Christian moral teaching. In "Supporting HIV Prevention as People of Faith," they consider the Sermon on the Mount as a valuable framework for dealing sensitively and effectively with people vulnerable to HIV infection. Second, critically reflect on possible distortions that come from our own perspectives. In his essay "Liberation Theologians Speak to Evangelicals," Charles Ringma shows how Liberation Theologians can shed light on the inadequacies of the evangelical movement in its perspective on God's love for the poor. Helen Beazley's essay "Antidote for a Poisoned Planet?" examines whether stewardship--the dominant framework informing evangelical perspectives on the environment--can alone radically reorient Christians in their relationship to creation so necessary for its renewal. Third, look for the challenges in the Bible that critique our current orientations and call us to be reconverted. In "An Evangelical Approach to Interfaith Engagement," Dave Andrews takes one of our most precious articles of exclusive faith, "Jesus is the Way," and makes it a framework for inclusive interfaith dialogue by exploring the "Way" that Jesus in the Gospels advocated engaging with people from other traditions and religions. In "Australia--Whose Land?" Peter Adams allows himself to be utterly transformed by the Bible's clear ethical teaching, which, he convincingly argues, must be applied in all its fullness to the injustice of Europeans towards indigenous Australians.

Book Unaids Action Framework

Download or read book Unaids Action Framework written by Unaids and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2012-05-30 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. Business as usual is no longer a viable response to the HIV-related risks of men who have sex with men and transgender people. Where data exist on HIV in these populations, they show that our collective responses are failing far more often than they are reaching scale or succeeding. Just as disconcerting, in many parts of the world, is the fact that few reliable data exist at all.

This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. government supports programs to combat global HIV/AIDS through an initiative that is known as the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This initiative was originally authorized in the U.S. Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Act of 2003 and focused on an emergency response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic to deliver lifesaving care and treatment in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with the highest burdens of disease. It was subsequently reauthorized in the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde U.S. Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008 (the Lantos-Hyde Act). Evaluation of PEPFAR makes recommendations for improving the U.S. government's bilateral programs as part of the U.S. response to global HIV/AIDS. The overall aim of this evaluation is a forward-looking approach to track and anticipate the evolution of the U.S. response to global HIV to be positioned to inform the ability of the U.S. government to address key issues under consideration at the time of the report release.

Book A WHO Public Health Approach to Ending AIDS in the Global South

Download or read book A WHO Public Health Approach to Ending AIDS in the Global South written by Charles F. Gilks and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In highlighting how a WHO Public Health Approach (PHA) has been successfully used in developing countries to provide HIV/AIDS patients with antiretroviral therapy (ART), this important book provides a template for how the PHA can be implemented to treat other chronic but non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as well. With over 28 million people globally now receiving treatment for HIV/AIDS, it’s clear there are lessons to be learnt from the provision of ART which have great relevance for NCD care and towards achieving universal health coverage in the global south. The first section of the book provides a detailed overview of the strategy that enabled such a successful programme to be taken place, the challenges faced and its evolution over time. The book then moves on to assert that by approaching other chronic NCDs in a similar way, focussing on populations with integrated long-term and short-term person-centred care, there is a pathway towards universal health care and Universal Health Coverage across the developing world. Discussing many of the most pressing diseases and public health issues affecting these regions, this book provides global health scholars and practitioners with a detailed analysis of the challenges faced in tackling these diseases, but also an integrated person-centred health-care approach by which these challenges may be met.
