Book Practical Fig Culture in Arizona Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Fig Culture in Arizona Classic Reprint written by W. H. Lawrence and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Fig Culture in Arizona The importance of the fig as a fruit crop in Arizona is shown by its presence in nearly all localities in which it will endure the winters and survive the frosts of spring. In addition to being a valuable fruit it serves as an excellent shade tree. The fig is a food fruit. Containing an average of more than 50 per cent sugar and 3.5'per cent protein, it is probably the most valuable of all dried food fruits, of which the fig, apple, peach, raisin, and date are the most common. The dried fig has a mildly laxative action and is not injurious when eaten in large quantities. At the close of a study pursued during two consecutive years, the writer was impressed with the following facts: (a) A proper selection of varieties will make fig culture possible in a wide range of climatic, water, and soil conditions such as cover a large propor tion of the agricultural area of the State. (b) Where limiting factors of production are almost nil and commercial production is possible, economic methods are not practiced in the growing or the distribution of the fruit on local and distant markets. (6) Few people appreciate the food value of the fruit and its many possible uses in either a fresh or a preserved condition. Book Fig Culture in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fig Culture in California Classic Reprint written by Ira J. Condit and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fig Culture in California Commercial fig orchards appear to have been established in the coast counties, and even in the Sacramento Valley and the Sierra Foothills, earlier than in the San J oaquin Valley. In 1876 there were trees in Yolo County, in Tuolumne, and only 685 in Fresno County. An orchard of 27 acres of White Adriatic fig trees was planted at Fresno about 1885, the first carload of dried white figs being sent east in 1889. The White Adriatic was the most widely planted variety during the two decades following 1885 but the dried product lacked the tender ness of skin and the flavor of the imported fig from Smyrna. The Year book of the United States Department of Agriculture for 1897 stated that the White Adriatic has many points of merit, but the fact that its quality when dried is inferior to that of the imported dried fruit from Smyrna has resulted in several efforts to introduce and grow the Smyrna type of fig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fig: Its History, Culture, and Curing, With a Descriptive Catalogue of the Known Varieties of Figs Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith, and to recommend for publication as a bulletin of this division, the manuscript of an article on The Fig: Its History, Culture, and Curing, with a descriptive catalogue of the known varieties of figs, prepared by Dr. Gustav Eisen, of San Francisco, Cal. Dr. Eisen is too well known as an author of high standing to need any introduction to the horticultural world. His name carries with it a guaranty of the value of this, his latest work. The recent successful introduction of the blastophaga into the fig-growing sections of the United States by the Department of Agriculture almost certainly assures the production of first-class Smyrna figs, which will doubtless greatly encourage and stimulate the industry, and thereby create an increase in the demand for reliable literature on the subject. This comprehensive treatise contains information of value to the scientific and practical fruit grower never before published in the form in which it is here presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fig Smut On September 2, 1921, a series of cultures from the inside of Adriatic figs of the different types was started to study further the question as to when the first natural introduction of smut spores occurs. Since the previous cultures had shown that figs of the first four types contained no smut, this experiment was confined mainly to types 4, 5, and 6. The figs were cut off at the stem, carried at once to the labora tory and cultured the same day. Fig agar slants were ordinarily used. All the usual precautions were taken to avoid the possibility of smut spores being introduced into the cultures from any source other than the fig pulp to be tested. After carefully Opening each fruit, a part of the pulp just below the eye, but not in contact with the surface, was cut out with a sterile needle and transferred to the culture tube. Five hundred and eight tubes from as many different figs were made in this manner, with results as before. Figure 4 shows typical cultures from the pulp of figs of type 5. Various other molds, yeasts and bacteria were also present and the abundance of these showed the same relation to maturity of the fruit as did that of the smut.
