Book A Class Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book of Physical Geography Physical Geography as a school subject is concerned properly with those aspects of the Earth which determine or influence the life of man. It necessarily touches other departments of natural knowledge at many points, but in the following lessons the contributory sciences of astronomy, geology, meteorology, and physics are introduced only to the extent necessary to make clear some of the more obvious ways in which human life is affected by natural phenomena. Educationally regarded, Geography is a practical science practical, since it cannot be studied satisfactorily without the personal performance of observational and experimental exercises designed to lead the student to discover for himself fundamental facts and principles a science, in that the data with which it deals can be applied convincingly to man's needs only when their place in an orderly sequence of cause and effect is duly appreciated. The practical exercises set out at the beginning of the various sections of the book have been framed to lead each student to become - within the limits of the course of study - an independent observer able to reason intelligently on the facts he encounters. The descriptive text which follows each set of exercises provides a means of checking the results obtained and the conclusions arrived at by the student. It is urged that, although the descriptive portions of the volume will be found complete as a text-book, much of the educational value of their study will be lost by students who neglect the practical work. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... EXERCISE V. THE SCULPTURE OF MOUNTAINS Object. To explain various features of mountain ranges. Preliminary, 1 1 1 gives a general view over a rolling district of low hills and shallow valleys, all covered with a deep weathered soil. The district is drained by a large river and many smaller streams, all flowing quietly and smoothly through their flood plains. The soils vary from place to place, as if the underlying rocks were of different kinds. Some low mountains rise in the E. and NW.; there the soil is thinner and more stony. The view is cut off in front by a vertical section, the baseline of which is at sea level. Altitudes are marked at various points; a scale of altitudes is drawn near the NE. corner, and a scale of miles along the front baseline. This exercise uses 11,12,14,13,16,1-22 [also 37 1-5]. Note that Plate 14 is to be used before Plate 13. 1. 1. The distance along the winding river A to E, 111, being 30 mi., what is the average fall of the river in feet per mile? 2. If E is 600 mi. from the river mouth, what is the average fall from E to the sea? 3. What is (about) the width of the main river flood plain? 4. The altitudes on stream (or small river) F (SE. corner of 111) are indicated for points two miles apart. What is its average fall? the width of its flood plain? 5. Why may the streams of this district be described as "thoroughly graded with respect to their general baselevel" (the ocean)? 6. What is the general altitude of the interfluves, or spaces between the small rivers (see foreground profile)? their relief? 7. What is the altitude of the highest mountain on the N. border? the general relief in that mountain group? Note: To find (roughly) the height of the mountain above the surrounding district, draw a straight...

Book Lessons in Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lessons in Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Charles Redway Dryer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Physical Geography This book has been written in the belief that physical geography is not only interesting and valuable in its sub ject matter, but is capable, when properly presented, of developing a scientific habit of mind. No attempt is made to discuss all the physical features of the earth, or those of any special region. The best type forms are selected and treated with sufficient fullness to give a clear and definite picture. From a study of the type general laws are developed, and the student is thus provided with a key for the solution of geographical problems wherever they may arise. Each topic is treated inductively. The essential facts are first given, and the student is then guided to a knowledge of their causes, significance, and results. This plan makes it possible to avoid in some degree the vague generalizations which are characteristic of most text-books. The student is in possession of a sufficient number of facts to enable him to see the basis and appreciate the value of the generalizations which follow. A large number of realistic exercises are introduced which appeal to the actual or possible experience of the student. They are designed not for the purpose of discovery but of realization, and to give some idea of the methods and possibilities of geo graphic research. These exercises include both field and laboratory work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Physiography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Physiography Classic Reprint written by Harold Wellman Fairbanks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiography The last few years have withnessed important changes in the text-books pertaining to Physical Geography. The study of the world as a fixed model has given place to the study of a world whose physical features are undergoing continual change. This change is in turn seen to affect the climate and the life conditions of plants and animals, and to have an important influence upov the activities of men. The number of books treating the subject from this newer point of view has rapidly increased, and several of them are so excellent that there would appear to be scarcely room for another book covering the same ground in the same manner. It seems to the author, however, that the evolution of better methods of teaching Physical Geography is still going on. The student will never gain what he should from the study until the use of the text-book is supplemented, not by the indoor laboratory method, for that would take the life out of the subject, but by the study of nature itself in the great outdoor laboratory. It is not the amount of ground gone over; it is not what is memorized from a textbook; it is not watching experiments in the class room, which makes Physical Geography, or Physiography as we prefer to call it, of value in the high school. It is rather the gaining of an ability to understand the meaning of the phenomena of the land, the water, and the air, and the relation of all life to them. For this purpose nothing can take the place of excursions and the study of the real world. The author has tried to work out in the present volume a practical concrete treatment of the subject along these lines. The book is intended as an aid to study, not as a compendium of information. Consequently a description of the world as a whole is omitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Advanced Practical Physical Geography for Public and Scondary Schools IN writing this book it has been the aim of the authors to present a clear and logical account of geographical phenomena. To do this it has been found necessary to touch lightly some of the main principles of other sciences, such as astronomy, mathematics, geology, and biology. Moreover, in order to comply with and help forward the growing tendency to consider geography as the science which above all others is full of every phase of human interest, the authors have made a definite attempt to show the relation that exists between man and the chief phenomena of nature. Not the least.factor in this attempt is the choice of experiments and practical exer cises, which are for the most part based upon common experience. At the same time the authors have been careful not to include any such exercises as would be un suitable or inconvenient in schools. It is intended that the book shall be a standard text-book for students in training-colleges; for thosein the middle and higher forms in secondary schools, and more especially for pupils taking the Advanced Course - recognized by the Board of Educa tion - in Geography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography Having been long convinced that such a method of instruction would place this branch of science upon a firmer and broader footing in our educational system, and would moreover prove of great service in foster ing a spirit of observation and reflection even among children, I projected many years ago the Primer of Pnysieal Geograp/zy, published in the series of Science Primers. The continued sale of large impressions of that little work encourages the hope that the method advocated has been found successful in practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Guide to Accompany the Text-Book of Elementary Physical Geography The following pages are in effect a summary and exten sion Of an active correspondence with teachers that has grown up since the publication Of the author's Physical Geography and Elementary Physical Geography. The progress made in this branch Of earth science during recent years has been so rapid that any text-book in which the modern aspects Of the science are presented must awaken many questions in the teacher's mind. It is with the desire to answer these questions that the following sug gestions and explanations have been written out. A num ber Of laboratory exercises are here outlined; but a. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Book Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Philip Lake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Geography Certain preliminary matters which are often treated under the head of Physical Geography, but which do not properly belong to that subject, are omitted. It is assumed, for instance, that the reader understands the principles of the barometer and the thermometer, and that he has some acquaintance with the motions of the earth and the moon. But no one who has been through a general elementary course in science, such as is now given in most secondary schools, should meet with any difficulty. A few words as to the arrangement adopted may be of use, especially to teachers who may wish to know how far the book will be serviceable in their own classes. The book falls naturally into three sections dealing respectively with the atmosphere, the ocean and the land. Logically the study of physical geography may begin either with the atmosphere or with the land, and it is mainly a matter of convenience which of these courses should be followed. The two branches of the subject are to so large an extent independent that, if desired, the section on the land may be read before the section on the atmosphere. But the study of the atmosphere should always precede that of the ocean. In planning a course, however, there is one consideration that should be borne in mind. It is easy to arrange a useful series of laboratory lessons upon the atmosphere or the ocean; but in the case of the land comparatively little laboratory work is possible and the most valuable form of practical work consists of excursions in the field. Consequently there are advantages in dealing with the atmosphere during the winter months and with the land during the summer. But much depends upon the circumstances under which the course is given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography by Discovery: A Practical Geography The principal object of this small volume is to place in the hands of pupils some original sources of world geography, and thereby to interest, to instruct, and to train. The extracts have been chosen from English texts, some of which are already in school libraries. The suggested method of study is not mere theory, but has been put to the test by the author with children in elementary schools from Standard IV. To Standard VII. The results obtained appear to justify the present publication. Some of the exercises at the end of the book are sufficiently difficult for pupils in the upper forms of secondary schools. The extracts in Chapter II. Are taken from The Travels of Marco Polo (everyman's Library, Messrs. J. M. Dent and Sons), in Chapters III. And V. From the Discovery of America, and in Chapter IV. From The Earliest Voyages Round the World (cam bridge Travel Books, Cambridge University Press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Ralph S. Tarr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear.
