Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Descriptive Geometry The first edition of this book, published in 1912, represented the author's views on the presentation of Descriptive Geometry, so as to arouse the student's interest in the subject without sacrificing rigorous training in the principles. In three years the text has been used in many schools, and the present, second edition, aims to embody the suggestions of many leading teachers of the subject, who have, at the request of the author and publishers, expressed their views as to this development. The main idea of the first edition, that of practicality, has been adhered to and amplified. The most important changes are The division into more chapters. A more logical sequence for certain portions of the text. The notation of points and planes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Descriptive Geometry

Download or read book Practical Descriptive Geometry written by William Griswold Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The main idea of the first edition, that of "practicality," has been adhered to and amplified. The most important changes are: 1. The division into more chapters. 2. A more logical sequence for certain portions of the text. 3. The notation of points and planes. 4. Graphic layouts for exercises. 5. More exercises of a practical nature, embracing more lines of engineering endeavor. 6. A number of new solutions, utilizing auxiliary planes more frequently. 7. A better system of perspective drawing. 8. A chapter on the intersections of plane solids. Although yielding to the request of several teachers for the inclusion of graphic layouts of exercises, the author still believes that dimensioned layouts are of great value despite the amount of time expended on the layout itself. With both of these, however, in practically unlimited quantity, the instructor may decide the question for himself. The layouts of both kinds have been made so flexible by interchanging and substituting data, that the number of variations is almost incalculable. This removes the objection, expressed by some teachers, to a definite and limited number of exercises, the solutions of which are sometimes preserved by student organizations. No such collection of solutions will benefit future classes, as the exercises can be made entirely different each succeeding year. Book The Essentials of Descriptive Geometry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Essentials of Descriptive Geometry Classic Reprint written by F. G. Higbee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Descriptive Geometry IT has been the endeavor Of the author in writing this text to include only those portions Of descriptive geometry which possess industrial utility and which develop the qualities Of mind so essential in a draftsman. First and foremost descriptive geometry should aim to teach projection. A draftsman must be able both to read and to write drawings with facility, and projection is the very grammar Of the language Of the designer. Secondly, descriptive geometry should aim to develop the ability to solve problems concerning the relations Of points, lines, and planes. These are, of course, but elementary parts Of all engineering structures as shown on drawings and it is important that a draftsman be prepared to solve problems relating to them directly on the drawing board. Thirdly, and perhaps most important Of all, descriptive geometry should aim to promote the ability to analyse a problem into its component parts, to reason from a given set Of conditions to a required set Of conclusions, and to build up from the drawing a mental picture of the Object which is there represented, for Without the ability to analyse, to reason, and to Visualize a draftsman is lacking in the essential qualifications of his calling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Descriptive Geometry It may help some instructors who contemplate using the fol lowing text-book to know how the authors have used the book in their classes. With this in View, the following general method for conducting the course is suggested and an outline of lessons given. Each instructor will, no doubt, need to alter the outline to some extent to suit the conditions under which he works. At the University of Wisconsin, descriptive geometry is given as a three credit course for one semester of eighteen weeks. Each week's work consists of one general lecture for all students in the course, one recitation, and two two-hour drafting periods for each section. One of the two-hour draft ing periods is sometimes turned into a one-hour recitation period. At the lecture, the general principles involved in the next lesson are explained, general announcements made, and prob lems assigned for a home plate which is to be handed in at the beginning of the recitation period. At the recitation, the stu dents are drilled in the analyses of the problems and then sent to the black board with some particular problem to solve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Geometry: A Treatise From a Mathematical Standpoint, Together With a Collection of Exercises and Practical Applications As an illustration of the generalized treatment throughout, attention may be called to the discussion of the cone. A common conception of a cone is that of a right circular cone, or cone of revolution. A generalized definition is given, however, to include all the surfaces which may be generated by a right line moving so as to pass through a fixed point and touch a curve. Further, it is stated that every cone is generically a right cone, and may be specifically named from the shape of a cross section so taken that a perpendicular, let fall from the fixed point or apex to the plane of the section, will pierce the latter in the center, focus, or other characteristic point, as a cusp, point of inflection, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Descriptive Geometry Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Descriptive Geometry Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Laban Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 1 Descriptive geometry as taught in the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology is intended to lead to the solution of the graphical problems which ordinarily arise in engineering and architecture; to train the imagination as necessary in these professions; to cultivate the sense of accuracy; and to give facility in drafting and the ability to read working drawings with ease. Consequently this book, an outgrowth of printed notes, treats the subject from the standpoint of the drafts man rather than from that of the mathematician, placing reliance on graphical methods, and omitting analytical methods. Great importance is attached to the drafting exercises which supplement, at the Institute, the use of the book; in these the student works out a set of study plates which give printed data for a large number of original problems and applications. Considerable work in the projection of solids is given in Chapter VII., since the author believes better results will be obtained if, from time to time, some of this work be combined with the study of the problems on the line and plane. It has also been thought best to give problems in all four quadrants, but the book contains a much larger number of examples in the first and third for the benefit of students in architecture and engineering. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Note-Book on Practical Solid or Descriptive Geometry: Containing Problems With Help for Solutions IN teaching a large 'class, if the method of lecturing and demonstrating from the black - board only is pursued, the l more intelligent students have generally to be kept back, from the necessity of frequent repetition, for the sake of u/ the less promising; if the plan of setting problems to each pupil is adopted, the teacher finds a difficulty in giving to each sufficient attention. A judicious combination of both methods is doubtless the best, though this is not always easy of attainment in working with numbers - the use of this book may help in accomplishing it. It is suggested that at the beginning of a chapter, and in some cases with each problem, the teacher should give a black-board explanation, carefully pointing out any fresh steps, before sending his pupils to their work. The number I of examples in each chapter to be worked out by the student is, of course, left to the teacher's judgment of the progress and requirements of his pupil.
