My chief concern has been to discover what could be omitted rather than what could be included. The aim of the teacher of composition should be to bring his students into such an attitude of mind that a subject may be to them a genuine question to be answered, and not a mere occasion for combining words into sentences without regard to the thought. I have, therefore, laid especial emphasis on the choice and treatment of themes. If a writer can form the habit of choosing one sharply defined topic and of telling exactly what he thinks, the imperfect details of his composition can be corrected by reading and practice. I need scarcely remark that no book of instructions will make a finished writer. Only constant practice and merciless criticism by the writer himself can yield the desired result. II In the later years of the course this practice should be continued, the tasks in written composition less frequent but calling for longer, maturer effort; and something, though not too much, of rhetorical theory should be placed before the pupil. III As the course progresses, practice in expression and practice in the intelligent reading of masterpieces should, within reasonable bounds, be correlated, this to be managed in part through the study of rhetoric. The chapters of the book are so arranged in unified groups, each group in large measure independent, that the subject matter lends itself readily to rearrangement to meet the varying needs of different schools. If this were not the case, it need not have been written. There are already books enough that deal ably with the theoretical part of the subject, but there are none that combine with theory a sufficient amount of practice. As composition is both a science and an art, no system of teaching it can be successful that does not recognize both of these departments. Young people do not acquire facility and correctness of expression merely by memorizing rules or by poring over methods of sentential structure. Repeated and varied experience in the making of sentences is necessary as well. Still, the learning of principles is not to be neglected; for, although it is not the whole, it is an essential part. How, then, can these two departments of the subject be most advantageously presented to the pupil? Every discerning teacher must have found that little theory and much practice is by far the most effective method of teaching composition. On this maxim this book is based; and its purpose is to furnish the teacher with the means of carrying into effect the plan here indicated. It proceeds on the simple method of laying down a few principles at a time, and then illustrating them with such number and variety of exercises that the pupil may fully master the practical application of these principles, and thereby learn not only to write, but to write correctly.
