Answer: The amount of cash on hand is 6104.70. Merchandise Account. Merchandise is the commodities which a merchant or manufacturer handles, and is usually applied to things bought and sold. 34. The merchandise account is kept for the purpose of determining whether we gain or lose on the commodities handled. 35. In opening the merchandise account, we debit the account for the merchandise we have on hand, then whenever it costs us value we debit it, and whenever it brings us in value we credit it. 36. When we come to close the account we take into consideration the amount of merchandise remaining unsold; this we call the inventory.
