Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prezentowane w niniejszym tomie studia dotyczą wielu aspektów szeroko rozumianego roku 1812. Dotykają one problemów polityki światowej, kwestii ustrojowo-prawnych napoleońskiej Europy, a wreszcie przebiegu samego konfliktu militarnego i próby wyjaśnienia przyczyn klęski armii cesarza. Book Postwar Continuity and New Challenges in Central Europe 1918 1923

Download or read book Postwar Continuity and New Challenges in Central Europe 1918 1923 written by Tomasz Pudłocki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a multi-layered analysis of the situation in Central Europe after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The new geopolitics emerging from the Versailles order, and at the same time ongoing fights for borders, considerable war damage, social and economic problems and replacement of administrative staff as well as leaders, all contributed to the fact that unlike Western Europe, Central Europe faced challenges and dilemmas on an unprecedented scale. The editors of this book have invited authors from over a dozen academic institutions to answer the question of to what extent the solutions applied in the Habsburg Monarchy were still practiced in the newly created nation states, and to what extent these new political organisms went their own ways. It offers a closer look at Central Europe with its multiple problems typical of that region after 1918 (organizing the post-imperial space, a new political discourse and attempts to create new national memories, the role of national minorities, solving social problems, and verbal and physical violence expressed in public space). Particular chapters concern post-1918 Central Europe on the local, state and international levels, providing a comprehensive view of this sub-region between 1918 and 1923.

Book History of Wills Testators and Their Families in Late Medieval Krakow

Download or read book History of Wills Testators and Their Families in Late Medieval Krakow written by Jakub Wysmułek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers the first comprehensive analysis of wills in late medieval Krakow. It presents the origins of testamentary acts in the Kingdom of Poland and its centre, Krakow, and their subsequent transformation from so called ‘canonical wills’ to ‘communal wills’. Wysmułek discusses the socio-cultural role of wills and sets them in their contemporary legal, social, and economic context. In doing so, he uncovers their influence on property ownership and family relations in the city, as well as on the religious practices of the burghers. Ultimately, this work seeks to change the perception of wills by treating the testamentary act itself as an important agent of historical social change – a ‘tool of power’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is the unique socio-political and socio-cultural community of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the golden age of the late fifteenth to early seventeenth century. This study analyses the cultural and political impact of the values disseminated in the newly created state, such as the concept of the state itself, its governance, representation, laws, and other elements of the socio-political system. Through theoretical and factographic arguments, this book demonstrates that the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was a social, political, and cultural link between geopolitical and geo-cultural spaces of the Roman West and the Byzantine East. Located at the cultural crossroads of Europe, Lithuania was an ethnically diverse, multilingual, multi-faith, multicultural national space. Nurtured by international contacts, its political system developed rapidly, influencing the formation of geopolitical and geo-cultural mentality of the whole Central Eastern European region.

Book Common Culture and the Ideology of Difference in Medieval and Contemporary Poland

Download or read book Common Culture and the Ideology of Difference in Medieval and Contemporary Poland written by Teresa Pac and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teresa Pac provides a much-needed contribution to the discussion on shared culture as foundational to societal survival. Through the examination of common culture as a process in medieval Kraków, Poznań, and Lublin, Pac challenges the ideology of difference—institutional, religious, ethnic, and nationalistic. Similarly, Pac maintains, twenty-first century Polish leaders utilize anachronistic approaches in the invention of Polish Catholic identity to counteract the country’s increasing ethnic and religious diversity. As in the medieval period, contemporary Polish political and social elites subscribe to the European Union’s ideology of difference, legitimized by a European Christian heritage, and its intended basis for discrimination against non-Christians and non-white individuals under the auspices of democratic values and minority rights, among which Muslims are a significant target.

Book The Causes of War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexander Gillespie
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2017-08-24
  • ISBN : 1509917659
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Causes of War written by Alexander Gillespie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume of a projected five-volume series charting the causes of war from 3000 BCE to the present day, written by a leading international lawyer, and using as its principal materials the documentary history of international law, largely in the form of treaties and the negotiations which led up to them. These volumes seek to show why millions of people, over thousands of years, slew each other. In departing from the various theories put forward by historians, anthropologists and psychologists, Gillespie offers a different taxonomy of the causes of war, focusing on the broader settings of politics, religion, migrations and empire-building. These four contexts were dominant and often overlapping justifications during the first four thousand years of human civilisation, for which written records exist.
