Book Visible Learning

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Hattie
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2008-11-19
  • ISBN : 1134024126
  • Pages : 389 pages

Download or read book Visible Learning written by John Hattie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and ground-breaking book is the result of 15 years research and synthesises over 800 meta-analyses on the influences on achievement in school-aged students. It builds a story about the power of teachers, feedback, and a model of learning and understanding. The research involves many millions of students and represents the largest ever evidence based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning. Areas covered include the influence of the student, home, school, curricula, teacher, and teaching strategies. A model of teaching and learning is developed based on the notion of visible teaching and visible learning. A major message is that what works best for students is similar to what works best for teachers – an attention to setting challenging learning intentions, being clear about what success means, and an attention to learning strategies for developing conceptual understanding about what teachers and students know and understand. Although the current evidence based fad has turned into a debate about test scores, this book is about using evidence to build and defend a model of teaching and learning. A major contribution is a fascinating benchmark/dashboard for comparing many innovations in teaching and schools.

Book The Historian s Two Bodies

Download or read book The Historian s Two Bodies written by Nathan Uglow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of history defines itself in terms of proof not trust. However, in the eighteenth century it became embarrassingly clear that the capacity of the past to appear as a totality under the critical control of the present eluded historical practice at every stage from research to judgement and to the critical reception of that judgement. Was history a practical but uncritical resource (the ’Temple of Fame’), or a self-enclosed critical project ever shy of ultimate truth? Technical manuals and journal reviews repeatedly reasserted fundamental criteria for acceptable historical practice, but failed to eradicate confusion between coping with and exploiting the information differentials between historical actors, historians, and readers of historical texts. The Historian’s Two Bodies offers a detailed analysis of this basic problem and its various repercussions for the competing perceptions of the historical task in eighteenth-century France while, importantly, denying itself any historical position free from such difficulties.

Book Katherine Mansfield

Download or read book Katherine Mansfield written by Gerri Kimber and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the reason why Katherine Mansfield's reputation in France has always been greater than in England. It examines the ways in which the French reception of Mansfield has idealised her persona to the extent of crafting a hagiography. Mansfield is placed within the general literary context of her era, exploring French literary tendencies at the time and juxtaposing them with the main literary trends in England. The author determines the motives behind the French critics' desire to put Mansfield on a pedestal, discusses how the three years she spent on French soil influenced her writing and whether the translations of her work collude in the myth surrounding her personality. This book is the first sustained attempt to establish interconnections between her own French influences (literary and otherwise) and the myth-making of the French critics and translators. The book also follows the critical appraisal of Mansfield's life and work in France from her death up to the present day, by closely analysing the differing French critical responses. The author reveals how these various strands combine to create a legend which has little basis in fact, thereby demonstrating how reception and translation determine the importance of an author's reputation in the literary world.

Book Startling Stereograms

Download or read book Startling Stereograms written by Gene Levine and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s something really magical about a stereogram; in fact, these stunning designs practically come alive with movement. As they tease and surprise our brains, they teach us to look at things differently and make us aware of how our eyes play tricks on us. And, of course, they are simply beautiful to see. Through the power of illusion and the illustrator’s skill, meaningless patterns and hidden objects on a 2-D page take shape and pop out in full, glorious, clearly defined 3-D. Images that were flat gain amazing dimension. These incredible, colorful, artistic creations offer unbelievable motion and depth.
