Book The Kingdom of God Is at Hand

Download or read book The Kingdom of God Is at Hand written by Theodore Kallman and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Kingdom of God Theodore Kallman illuminates the brief life of a Christian Socialist community founded by four men—a minister, and editor, a professor, and an engineer—on a worn-out cotton plantation just outside of Columbus, Georgia in 1896. While Christian Commonwealth only lasted until 1900, its combination of religious communitarianism and socialist ideology proved attractive to many. It was a place where women enjoyed a sort of political equality and where its school—open to all white students of Muscogee County—emphasized a critique of private property. Kallman explains how particular brand of Tolstoyan anarchism inspired by the Russian novelist’s philosophical treatise The Kingdom of God is Within You (1894) and Christ’s Sermon on the Mount took root in west-central Georgia and attracted attention from famous onlookers--Leo Tolstoy and Jane Addams included. In Kallman's capable hands, what appears to be merely a blip barely worth mentioning for historians of Georgia and the larger United States, instead emerges as a story that has much to teach us about Gilded Age American and provides necessary context for the surging interest in America's socialist past.

This book was released on 2020-03-14 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cognitive Approach in Cloud Computing and Internet of Things Technologies for Surveillance Tracking Systems discusses the recent, rapid development of Internet of things (IoT) and its focus on research in smart cities, especially on surveillance tracking systems in which computing devices are widely distributed and huge amounts of dynamic real-time data are collected and processed. Efficient surveillance tracking systems in the Big Data era require the capability of quickly abstracting useful information from the increasing amounts of data. Real-time information fusion is imperative and part of the challenge to mission critical surveillance tasks for various applications. This book presents all of these concepts, with a goal of creating automated IT systems that are capable of resolving problems without demanding human aid. - Examines the current state of surveillance tracking systems, cognitive cloud architecture for resolving critical issues in surveillance tracking systems, and research opportunities in cognitive computing for surveillance tracking systems - Discusses topics including cognitive computing architectures and approaches, cognitive computing and neural networks, complex analytics and machine learning, design of a symbiotic agent for recognizing real space in ubiquitous environments, and more - Covers supervised regression and classification methods, clustering and dimensionality reduction methods, model development for machine learning applications, intelligent machines and deep learning networks - includes coverage of cognitive computing models for scalable environments, privacy and security aspects of surveillance tracking systems, strategies and experiences in cloud architecture and service platform design

Book Lactic Acid Bacteria Genetics Metabolism and Applications

Download or read book Lactic Acid Bacteria Genetics Metabolism and Applications written by Roland J. Siezen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foods fermented with lactic acid bacteria are an important part of the human diet. Lactic acid bacteria play an essential role in the preservation of food raw materials and contribute to the nutritional, organoleptic, and health properties of food products and animal feed. The importance of lactic acid bacteria in the production of foods throughout the world has resulted in a continued scientific interest in these micro-organisms over the last two decades by academic research groups as well as by industry. This research has resulted in a number of important scientific breakthroughs and has led to new applications. The most recent of these advances is the establishment of the complete genome sequences of a number of different lactic acid bacterial species. To communicate and stimulate the research on lactic acid bacteria and their applications, a series of tri-annual symposia on lactic acid bacteria was started in 1983 under the auspices of the Netherlands Society for Microbiology (NVVM), which was later also supported by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS). The aim of these state-of-the-art symposia is to offer a unique platform for universities, institutes, and industry in this area of biotechnology, to present recent work, to obtain information on new developments, and to exchange views with colleagues from all over the world on scientific progress and applications. The growing number of participants at these symposia has been a clear demonstration of the interest of the international industrial and scientific community in this area of research. The 7th Symposium is based on a number of plenary lectures that review the scientific progress of the last years in the different areas of research on lactic acid bacteria, and which are documented in this special issue of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.

Book Creating a Democratic Public

Download or read book Creating a Democratic Public written by Kevin Mattson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During America's Progressive Era at the beginning of the twentieth century, democracy was more alive than it is today. Social activists and intellectuals of that era formed institutions where citizens educated themselves about pressing issues and public matters. While these efforts at democratic participation have largely been forgotten, their rediscovery may represent our best hope for resolving the current crisis of democracy in the United States. Mattson explores the work of early activists like Charles Zueblin, who tried to advance adult education at the University of Chicago, and Frederic Howe, whose People's Institute sparked the nationwide forum movement. He then turns to the social centers movement, which began in Rochester, New York, in 1907 with the opening of public schools to adults in the evening as centers for debate over current issues. Mattson tells how this simple program grew into a national phenomenon and cites its achievements and political ideals, and he analyzes the political thought of activists within the movement&—notably Mary Parker Follett and Edward Ward&—to show that these intellectuals had a profound understanding of what was needed to create vigorous democratic practices. Creating a Democratic Public challenges us to reconsider how we think about democracy by bringing us into critical dialogue with the past and exploring the work of yesterday's activists. Combining historical analysis, political theory, and social criticism, Mattson analyzes experiments in grassroots democracy from the Progressive Era and explores how we might foster more public involvement in political deliberation today.
