Book Suitable Accommodations

Download or read book Suitable Accommodations written by J. F. Powers and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wry, moving collection of letters from the late J. F. Powers, "a comic writer of genius" (Mary Gordon) Best known for his 1963 National Book Award–winning novel, Morte D'Urban, and as a master of the short story, J. F. Powers drew praise from Evelyn Waugh, Flannery O'Connor, Saul Bellow, and Philip Roth, among others. Though Powers's fiction dwelt chiefly on the lives of Catholic priests, he long planned to write a novel of family life, a feat he never accomplished. He did, however, write thousands of letters, which, selected here by his daughter, Katherine A. Powers, become an intimate version of that novel, dynamic with plot and character. They show a dedicated artist, passionate lover, reluctant family man, pained aesthete, sports fan, and appreciative friend. At times wrenching and sad, at others ironic and exuberantly funny, Suitable Accommodations is the story of a man at odds with the world and, despite his faith, with his church. Beginning in prison, where Powers spent more than a year as a conscientious objector, the letters move on to his courtship, marriage, comically unsuccessful attempt to live in the woods, life in the Midwest and in Ireland, an unorthodox view of the Catholic Church, and an increasingly bizarre search for "suitable accommodations," which included three full-scale emigrations to Ireland. Here, too, are encounters with such diverse people as Thomas Merton, Eugene McCarthy, Robert Lowell, Theodore Roethke, Sean O'Faolain, Frank O'Connor, Dorothy Day, and Alfred Kinsey. An NPR Best Book of 2013

Book No One Cares About Crazy People

Download or read book No One Cares About Crazy People written by Ron Powers and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times-bestselling author Ron Powers offers a searching, richly researched narrative of the social history of mental illness in America paired with the deeply personal story of his two sons' battles with schizophrenia. From the centuries of torture of "lunatiks" at Bedlam Asylum to the infamous eugenics era to the follies of the anti-psychiatry movement to the current landscape in which too many families struggle alone to manage afflicted love ones, Powers limns our fears and myths about mental illness and the fractured public policies that have resulted. Braided with that history is the moving story of Powers's beloved son Kevin -- spirited, endearing, and gifted -- who triumphed even while suffering from schizophrenia until finally he did not, and the story of his courageous surviving son Dean, who is also schizophrenic. A blend of history, biography, memoir, and current affairs ending with a consideration of where we might go from here, this is a thought-provoking look at a dreaded illness that has long been misunderstood. "Extraordinary and courageous . . . No doubt if everyone were to read this book, the world would change." -- New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: Dewey contends that while Powers's novels investigate the most pressing issues of the new millennium, the novelist is most deeply interested in the same thematic argument that consumed Ralph Waldo Emerson and Emily Dickinson - the problem of the self, the deep and unshakable loneliness that has always been at the heart of the American literary imagination."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goodreads.com has declared that "eavesdropping on these personal reflections is entertaining, enlightening, and just plain fun to read," and indeed, throughout THE SPREE OF '83, Freddy recounts first-hand the highly-entertaining and emotionally-touching story behind his decades-long roller-coaster ride through the music business, and multiple trips to the top of the charts. He's equally open about his inspiring struggle in the years before his death in 2016 battling Parkinson's disease, all while his legacy endured, gaining new generations of fans over the Millennium. Hailed by Rolling Stone Country as "a freewheeling, often poignant oral history of one of the unsung heroes of Country Music," the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame inductee has been to the top of the Charts as both a producer (Willie Nelson's Grammy-winning Over the Rainbow LP) and songwriter, penning many # 1 hits with sidekick and fellow legend Merle Haggard, who declared "Freddy Powers is one of my favorite people in the world," while Willie Nelson adds personally that "Freddy's strongest suit, I always thought, was his rhythm guitar playing. He was a great rhythm guitar player, and he wrote some great songs with and for Merle." Joining Nelson and Haggard, who both contribute extensive exclusive commentary, are fellow legendary country songwriters/stars like Sonny Throckmorton, Paul Buskirk, Floyd Tillman, Tanya Tucker, Big & Rich, Larry Gatlin, producer Frank Liddell, Mary Sarah, and many more! While fans read along, they can stream live on all digital platforms a dynamic collection of new music, including a 60-Song 2-disc studio/live collection of 6 decades of Freddy Powers' best-known hits, featuring musical duets and collaborations with many of the aforementioned music stars! Along with the Official Book Soundtrack, fans of Freddy's Dixieland Jazz and legendary Comedy routines are given a front-row seat with Freddy Powers & The Powerhouse IV: LIVE IN VEGAS – '75! and Freddy Powers & The Powerhouse IV: LIVE IN RENO! Critical Praise: "(Freddy has) demonstrated a dedication to broadening the perimeters of country & western, particularly in creating a fusion of country honky tonk and swing jazz. This interest runs throughout Powers' career." – Country Music Television (CMT) "I think he's one of the least-recognized of the great country songwriters. His music will be great in any era, no matter what year it is, you'll still want to hear a Freddy Powers song." - Tanya Tucker

From the roots to the crown and back to the seeds, Richard Powers’s twelfth novel unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. There is a world alongside ours—vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe.

He’s tried to let her go, made a life as a surgeon, a brother, a son. He’s dated more than his share of women - more than his brothers’ shares too. But there will be only one Hailey in his life, and he has always believed in second chances. When she reappears in his life, in his hospital, and in need of his help, will the choices Hailey made in life keep them reliving the past or give them a second chance at the future? Powers’ Pulse is a story of friendship, secrets, and letting love lead you home - no matter where or who that might be. Love finds a way.
