Book Powering Planet Earth

Download or read book Powering Planet Earth written by Nicola Armaroli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their book Nicola Armaroli, Vincenzo Balzani and Nick Serpone uncover the background details associated with a transition to sustainable energy production that are routinely swept under the table in public discussions. They are not only concerned with the (alleged) advantages and disadvantages of any one energy generation technology from a technical viewpoint, but also with the ecological, economic, political and social consequences of an inevitable transition. In a highly readable manner aimed at an international audience, the authors introduce the often misused and sometimes abused term 'energy' and give a lucid account of the development of energy production from timber to nuclear energy and renewable energies. They compare various energy generation methods with respect to their efficiency and practicability for large-scale implementation and examine if, and how, these methods live up to the expectations and promises their proponents make. In addition, the authors juxtapose the political and economic prerequisites in different regions of the world that advance, or hinder, an energy turnaround. They round off their book by debunking the seventeen most popular myths often cited in discussions on energy issues. As a result, the authors provide ammunition for debate, underpin (and unsettle) opinions using facts, and challenge comfortable and popular chains of reasoning.

Book Earth Energies

Download or read book Earth Energies written by Serge Kahili King and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examinations and accounts of experimentation with subtle energies. In addition to the scientifically accepted forces of electricity, magnetism, and gravity, there are, according to the author, "psychoenergetic" forces, those that interact with the mind as well as the body. His research deals with the energies behind extraordinary phenomena like non-physical healing, levitation, telekinesis, superstrength, and many others in which the mind is always an important factor. He touches on pyramid power, dowsing, feng shui, and the use of magnets for healing. These, and many more sources may have a single energy in common; the same way different physical elements all have electrons in common. Leave skepticism behind, and be fascinated by his examples and observations that may someday prove to be of practical value, and no more "strange" than bread mold being used to cure disease.

Book Simple Solutions

Download or read book Simple Solutions written by Patrick Kenji Takahashi and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simple Solutions: For Planet Earth is a scientific book written in a popular style for the average reader. You have read about Peak Oil and Global Climate Warming, and complained about $4/gallon gasoline, but how really serious are these headlines and annoyances? The author has worked his entire career on: the science, technology, education, administration and politics of these subjects, and crystallizes this complex field into understandable elements, providing simple solutions for humanity. Does it make sense for the renewable energy budget of the Federal Government to be about $1 billion/year when: o Annual tax incentives and government programs for the oil industry are supposedly in the range between $38 billion and $115 billion, although Lester Brown says $210 billion in 2005. o Farm subsidies alone in 2004 cost taxpayers $16.2 billion. o Our country spends $12 billion a month, or $144 billion/year, on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, ostensibly to protect oil, only to raise prices. The author’s long experience with the Greenhouse Effect has led him to believe that methane, not carbon dioxide, could well be the critical gas of concern, for there is potential for global warming to cascade into, what he terms, the Venus Syndrome. The closing chapter speculates on a hypothesis regarding mega-tsunamis (100 meter waves) from landslides. While simple solutions are suggested, the problem is the inability of our civilization to agree on a workable strategy, which is further weakened by the lack of will on part of the general populace. Thus, the reader is urged to help make that crucial difference. Instructions and examples are provided on how to attain Rainbow Vision to carry out this mission for a better Planet Earth. The simplest solution is for everyone to join in on the effort.

Download or read book Powering Science written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) currently operates over five dozen missions, with approximately two dozen additional missions in development. These missions span the scientific fields associated with SMD's four divisionsâ€"Astrophysics, Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Planetary Sciences. Because a single mission can consist of multiple spacecraft, NASA-SMD is responsible for nearly 100 operational spacecraft. The most high profile of these are the large strategic missions, often referred to as "flagships." Large strategic missions are essential to maintaining the global leadership of the United States in space exploration and in science because only the United States has the budget, technology, and trained personnel in multiple scientific fields to conduct missions that attract a range of international partners. This report examines the role of large, strategic missions within a balanced program across NASA-SMD space and Earth sciences programs. It considers the role and scientific productivity of such missions in advancing science, technology and the long-term health of the field, and provides guidance that NASA can use to help set the priority of larger missions within a properly balanced program containing a range of mission classes.
