Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mos maiorum stated that only men could hold magistracies and military office, operating in the spaces dedicated to the city’s politics — the senate, the popular assemblies, the courts, the Forum. Women, on the other hand, were obliged to conform to traditional behavioural models which excluded them from any form of political activity. Nevertheless, in the 1st century BCE, the emergency situation of the civil wars led some women to undertake political initiatives. This opportunity arose from the Roman matrons’ contingent need to represent and replace the men who until recently had managed the city’s politics, and to safeguard the ruling power among the families on which the oligarchic system was founded. Their contemporaries and subsequent historiographers often found ways to justify these women’s actions in order not to compromise their families’ reputations. To that end, certain legends, recast during the Late Republic and the Early Principate, identify authoritative precedents that would legitimise women’s initiatives in the present. This book studies the protagonists, the methods, the aims, the consequences, and the judgement of matrons’ political acts. The purpose of this study is twofold: on the one hand, it seeks to shed light upon a defining moment in the history of women; on the other hand, it aims to reconstruct a crucial aspect of the political history of ancient Rome.

Book Fever Hospitals and Fever Nurses

Download or read book Fever Hospitals and Fever Nurses written by Margaret Currie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well researched book provides an interesting study of the development of fever hospitals and fever nursing, mainly in nineteenth and twentieth century Britain. It provides new insights into the development of nursing roles and nurse education and looks at the lives of key figures at that time. The text examines how this once important branch of the nursing profession emerged in the nineteenth century, only to be discarded in the second half of the following century. Drawing on the work of Goffman and Foucault, the study shows how, aided by medical advances, fever nurses transformed their custodial duties into a therapeutic role and how training schemes were implemented to improve the recruitment and retention of nurses. As standards of living improved and patient’s chances of recovery increased, many fever hospitals became redundant and fever nurses were no longer required. The wisdom of creating fever hospitals and then disbanding them is questioned in the light of changing disease patterns, international travel and the threat posed by biological warfare.

Book excerpt: New York Times and USA Today Bestseller! R. A. Salvatore returns with one of fantasy's most beloved and enduring icons, the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden, in an all-new trilogy full of swordplay, danger, and imaginative thrills. Centuries ago, in the city of Menzoberranzan, a young weapon master earned a reputation far above his station or that of his poor house. Zaknafein. The greater nobles watched him, and one powerful matron—Malice—decided to take him as her own. She connived with rival houses to secure her prize, but it was ultimately the roguish mercenary Jarlaxle who caught him. Thus sparked the birth of two key moments in Drow history: the coupling of a noble and a weapon master that would produce Drizzt Do’Urden . . .and the friendship between Zaknafein and Jarlaxle. Spanning two eras, this unlikely pair takes on the intrigue and opportunities to be found in the shadows, providing a fascinating prelude to the journeys that have shaped the modern-day Forgotten Realms, while Zaknafein and his son Drizzt will be joined together in a series of trials that parallel those of centuries long past, even though their paths no longer seem to be aligned. How will a father, so long constrained by the vicious and conservative society of the drow, be able to reconcile his ingrained prejudices with the world and companions of his enlightened son? The answer lies in their desire for peace over chaos. And as long as the scourge of the goddess Lolth’s ambitions still remains, both father and son are determined to keep her dark will at bay. But the Spider Queen is powerful, and now demons have been unleashed on the unwitting denizens of the surface world. United in purpose—and through their mutual friendship with Jarlaxle—Zaknafein and Drizzt will need to put aside their differences in order to keep the ones they love safe.

He added and deleted words, emended lines, divided poems, dropped and created titles, and shifted the order of poems. Leaves of Grass: A Textual Variorum of the Printed Poems includes all the variants that Whitman ever published, from the collection’s first appearance in 1855 through the posthumous “Old Age Echoes” annex printed in 1897. Download or read book A Concise History of Canada written by Margaret Conrad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Conrad's history of Canada begins with a challenge to its readers. What is Canada? What makes up this diverse, complex and often contested nation-state? What was its founding moment? And who are its people? Drawing on her many years of experience as a scholar, writer and teacher of Canadian history, Conrad offers astute answers to these difficult questions. Beginning in Canada's deep past with the arrival of its Aboriginal peoples, she traces its history through the conquest by Europeans, the American Revolutionary War and the industrialization of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to its prosperous present. Despite its successes and its popularity as a destination for immigrants from across the world, Canada remains a curiously reluctant player on the international stage. This intelligent, concise and lucid book explains just why that is.
