Book Power System Performance Enhancement Using Flexible AC Transmission System Devices

Download or read book Power System Performance Enhancement Using Flexible AC Transmission System Devices written by Saravana Kumar Rajendran and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to investigate the performance enhancement of a power system using Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices. It is intended to show how the reliability and performance of the power system is improved. The focus is to enhance the understanding of the system operating with and without these devices. Power transmission can always be improved by upgrading or adding new transmission circuits. But this is not a practical solution. FACTS devices are feasible alternatives for optimizing the transmission systems. Providing reactive shunt compensation with shuntconnected capacitors and reactors is a well-established technique to get a better voltage profile in a power system. Shunt capacitors lack dynamic capabilities, and so dynamically controlled reactive power compensation is essential. This feature is provided by FACTS devices. Implementation of new equipment consisting high power electronics based technologies such as FACTS becomes essential for improvement of operation and control of power systems. FACTS promote the use of static controllers to enhance the controllability and increase the power transfer capability. Three software tools were used in this thesis, such as, MATLAB, PSCAD and PowerWorld. Thyristor Controlled Reactors (TCR), Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors (TCSC), Static Var Compensators (SVC) are used as FACTS devices for consideration in the power system study. This thesis aims at examining the ability of FACTS devices and distributed FACTS devices for power flow control and reactive power compensation in a power system.

This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Electrotechnology, language: English, abstract: The aim of the study is to model FACTS devices on weak transmission line in the Nigeria power network and consider their effect on the bus voltages, reactive and active power using genetic algorithm(GA) approach for loss minimization. The Nigeria 330KV existing network to be considered consist of nine (9) generating stations, thirty(30)Buses and forty one (41) transmission lines which will be modelled and simulated using Matlab Version 7.10. The study is limited to Nigeria 330kV existing power network with the focus on the comparison of the Bus voltages and power flow on the transmission lines when FACTS devices are incorporated and when the FACTS devices are not incorporated. Research Questions: For the realization of the objectives mentioned above and the aim, the following research questions were set as a guide: 1. What is the significant effect of FACTS devices on weak transmission lines? 2. Can FACTS device be used with genetic algorithm for optimization of power loss and improvement of the bus voltages? 3. What is the limitation of using just genetic algorithm without FACTS device for the optimization of power loss and the improvement of the bus voltages? This research work is divided into five chapters with each chapter buttressing more on minimization of power loss. The scope of the work, the objective and aim of the research work to be achieved is addressed in chapter one (1). Chapter two(2) focus on the literature review of other researchers on FACTS device in the improvement of the power network, the concept of FACTS device and the choice of FACTS device to be used was also addressed in chapter two (2) of this research work. Chapter three focus on the methodology used for this study. The simulation of the 330kV Nigeria power network was done on MATLAB /SIMULINK 7.5. Also the chapter three focused on the use of power flow analysis

Download or read book Power Transmission Capability Improvement by Power Devices written by Azmira Jannat and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, different types of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Line controller and their performance have been discussed to use in the transmission line. Improvement of transmission capability has been showed by simulation software such as PSpice, Microsoft Visio, Paint and MATLAB/SIMULINK. Different case studies have also been investigated to verify the performance of proposed inverter and flexible alternating current transmission line controller. The simulation results prove that the controller with the proposed switching scheme functions successfully as the real time voltage and var controller. The performed work also will be able to minimize the reactive power flow in the transmission line. It is observed that, installing the flexible alternating current transmission line controller makes it possible to maintain the unity power factor to ensure maximum usage of transmission capability and improves the dynamic stability.

Book A Study of the Impact of Flexible AC Transmission System Devices on the Economic secure Operation of Power Systems

Download or read book A Study of the Impact of Flexible AC Transmission System Devices on the Economic secure Operation of Power Systems written by Julie Griffin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis examines how Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices can improve the secure-economic operation of a power system. More specifically, the benefits of FACTS devices in a network are evaluated in terms of four areas of power system study: system security, economic dispatch operation, maximum network loadability and electric industry deregulation. Simulations of a simple network are made to evaluate how a FACTS device can be used to increase the security region of a network. Based on this analysis, simulations are performed using the 24-bus IEEE reliability test network to assess the possible savings in generation costs, the increase in maximum network loadability and the improvements in flexibility of exchanges resulting from the use of a FACTS device in this network. The results demonstrate that FACTS devices can be used effectively to increase the security region of a network thereby allowing for a better optimum operating point in any optimization problem performed over such a region." --
