Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the differences in strength and power between playing positions and starters versus non-starters. Division III post-season male American football players (N = 38) participated in a descriptive study that consisted of strength, power, and dynamic performance variable testing. Subjects were grouped depending on playing position (skill, big skill, or line) and into starters and non-starters. Subjects completed a 3-repetition maximum hexagonal barbell deadlift to determine strength capabilities. Power output was assessed using a hexagonal barbell jump at 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70% of estimated 1RM. The Skill group results indicate that power is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters. Simultaneously, the Combo group results indicate that speed is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters. Also, the L.O.S. group results indicate that bodyweight is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters.

Book excerpt: "In recent years the National Collegiate Athlete Association has lessened the amount of time they allow their participating football members to practice in the preseason. Consequently, coaches look for ways to best utilize the time they do have. This study was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference in preseason testing results between the starters and non-starters. Seventy-two members of the Bemidji State University (BSU) football team, 24 in three separate positions, were studied over a three years span, encompassing 33 games to determine of [sic] the starters performed significantly higher than the non-starters in the five fitness tests performed. No such study had been performed at BSU longer than three games prior to this research. Athletes were tested on the 40 yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, pro agility, and the Beaver Run. Results were entered into an SPSS program and compared using an independent samples t-test. There were significant results between the starters and non-starters of the linebacker and the wide receiver group. No such results were found in any of the five preseason fitness tests amongst the defensive back groups. The results of this study indicate there are differences between starters and non-starters in certain position groups and certain tests within those groups. Not all tests were significant and are able to be used to help determine potential starters over non-starters"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: A critical look at the tension between the larger role of the university and the commercialization of college sports Unwinding Madness is the most comprehensive examination to date of how the NCAA has lost its way in the governance of intercollegiate athletics—and why it is incapable of achieving reform and must be replaced. The NCAA has placed commercial success above its responsibilities to protect the academic primacy, health and well-being of college athletes and fallen into an educational, ethical, and economic crisis. As long as intercollegiate athletics reside in the higher education environment, these programs must be academically compatible with their larger institutions, subordinate to their educational mission, and defensible from a not-for-profit organizational standpoint. The issue has never been a matter of whether intercollegiate athletics belongs in higher education as an extracurricular offering. Rather, the perennial challenge has been how these programs have been governed and conducted. The authors propose detailed solutions, starting with the creation of a new national governance organization to replace the NCAA. At the college level, these proposals will not diminish the revenue production capacity of sports programs but will restore academic integrity to the enterprise, provide fairer treatment of college athletes with better health protections, and restore the rights and freedoms of athletes, which have been taken away by a professionalized athletics mentality that controls the cost of its athlete labor force and overpays coaches and athletic directors. Unwinding Madness recognizes that there is no easy fix to the problems now facing college athletics.
