Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers’ dreams and fossil energy replacement schemes can come true. Man has been tapping the energy of the sea to provide power for his industries for centuries. Tidal energy combined with that of waves and marine winds rank among those most successfully put the work. Large scale plants are capital intensive but smaller ones, particularly built in China, have proven profitable. Since the initiation of the St Malo project in France, similar projects have gone into active service where methods have been devised to cut down on costs, new types of turbines developed and cost competitiveness considerably improved. Tidal power has enormous potential. The book reviews recent progress in extracting power from the ocean, surveys the history of tidal power harnessing and updates a prior publication by the author.

Book Tidal Power

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when public attention is focused on the environment, while simultaneously society is increasing at an ever-accelerating rate its demand electrical power, the possibility of utilizing the power of the oceans by for pollution free tidal power generation is most attractive. Tidal power has been used to a limited extent over several centuries but only recently has any sig nificant effort been dedicated to realizing some of the vast potential. The first pilot project at La Rance has now been operating successfully for several years and the second experimental station using up-dated construc tion techniques has been in operation at Kislaya Guba since 1969. These projects have contributed valuable experience and establish the technical feasibility of this important source of electrical power, while providing guid ance in those areas requiring further development to realize economic viability. More than fifty sites can be readily identified around the world where tidal power schemes could realistically be developed. With improvements in technology, this number might well be extended by utilization of a large number of river estuaries. Such developments must be considered not only on the basis of the production of electrical power but also in respect of associated benefits. Considerable bodies of water would be partially confined, thereby improving recreational facilities as has already been experienced at La Rance.

Book Elements of Tidal Electric Engineering

Download or read book Elements of Tidal Electric Engineering written by Robert H. Clark and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-03-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first text to cover all stages of a tidal-electric feasibility study As interest in tidal-electric power generation continues to grow in response to demands for renewable sources of energy, readers can now turn to Elements of Tidal-Electric Engineering for the first comprehensive treatment of the subject. The author, Robert H. Clark, a leader in the field for almost fifty years, has spearheaded several important research projects and consulted with governments and private industries around the world on tidal-electric issues. The focus of this text is the feasibility study. Power engineers gain both the knowledge and the skills needed to accurately determine the feasibility of a proposed tidal power development plan, including: * Major factors to consider in selecting a site for preliminary assessment * Tidal power schemes and mode * Hydraulic and mathematical models of estuaries to predict the estuary's response to physical changes and the effects caused by operation of the proposed plant * Civil works required for tidal power development and the associated tidal generating equipment * Procedures to optimize plant output * Economic evaluation and risk assessment * Environmental impact of proposed construction and operation The book ends with an examination of commercially operating plants and a brief review of sites that have been the subject of investigation in the last half century. References and bibliographies direct readers to primary source material for further study. Until publication of this text, power engineers have had to rely on random journal articles and anecdotal information to perform a feasibility investigation. With the publication of Elements of Tidal-Electric Engineering these engineers have a single, integrated source that methodically covers all the issues.

Book Tidal Power

Download or read book Tidal Power written by A. M. A. Struben and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tidal Power: Tides and Their Measurement; The Estimation of Potential Tidal Power; Comparisons Between Systems of Development; The Financial Aspect of the Problem; Difficulties to Be Overcome; And the Lines for Development Ages ago, far back in the dim past, man must inevitably have "sensed" the enormous power embodied in the ceaseless, diurnal ebb and flow of great volumes of the sea into and out of every estuary, strait, or bay that came within his ken. Gradually, as he became master of other forces in Nature, he is certain to have pondered on the possibility of enlisting this latent power into his service, as several centuries before the Christian era commenced we find records showing that he observed intelligently the action of the tides, and commented on their connection with the phases of the moon. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, such speculations took shape in "Tide Mills" run by water flowing from basins during falling tides, that had been filled by the previous rising tide.
