Book Total Energy Consumption for Municipal Wastewater Treatment

Download or read book Total Energy Consumption for Municipal Wastewater Treatment written by Robert Smith and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantities of all forms of energy consumed for collection and treatment of municipal wastewater are estimated. Heat energy is equated to electrical energy by a conversion factor of 10,500 Btu/kwh. Total energy consumption, expressed as kwh/mg of wastewater treated, ranges from 2300-3700 kwh/mg. Energy used for construction of the treatment plant and the sewerage system represents 35-55% of the total energy consumed. The remainder used for plant operation is predominately (65-75%) electrical energy. The use of high efficiency aeration devices combined with good maintenance practices appears to offer the best opportunity for conservation of energy within the plant. Recovery of energy from the sludge produced at the plant can be accomplished by anaerobically digesting the sludge and using the digester gas as fuel for internal combustion engines. In large plants, when the sludge is sufficiently dewatered, it is also possible to recover energy by incinerating the dewatered sludge with production of steam in a waste heat boiler. The steam can then be used within the plant or expanded through a steam turbine to produce mechanical or electrical energy.

Book Energy Consumption

Download or read book Energy Consumption written by Sigrid Reiter and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy is central to sustainable development. It has huge environmental, social, and economic impacts, such as its influence on climate change, poverty reduction efforts, industrial and agricultural productivity and environmental and human health. The development of strategies towards a sustainable energy transition is one of the most important world challenges of the twenty-first century. The choices that we will make in the coming years about energy will determine what world future generations will inherit. This book gives an overview of the key issues, strategies, operational guidelines and policy implications of current research on the transition to more sustainable energy consumption. It investigates the important issue of the relation between human activities, energy systems and energy use. It addresses the environmental, social and economic impacts of energy consumption and their interrelationships. This book was written by academic and research experts in the field of energy, and they have developed strategies for an energy sustainable plan for the main energy-intensive sectors: energy production, transportation, buildings, agriculture and domestic appliances. The best opportunities and solutions for energy demand reduction are shown, including energy efficiency improvement, increases in the share of renewable energy sources, technological progress and behavioural changes in the field of energy. The aim of this work is to guide the reader toward more efficient policies and actions that will actually improve the future. The book also addresses the different issues faced by developing and developed countries, as well as their relative respective solutions. It presents various alternative pathways that are open to our societies. The methods of energy consumption assessment and modelling approaches are also discussed. All those who are interested in energy challenges will find practical knowledge and operational solutions in this book, providing a solid foundation for making well-informed choices in the future, as individuals and as societies.

Book International Comparisons of Energy Consumption

Download or read book International Comparisons of Energy Consumption written by Joy Dunkerley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, this report summarises the results of a workshop on why energy consumption is much higher in the United States than other industrialised countries with similar living standards. The papers included in the workshop make interesting comparisons between countries such as Japan and the United Kingdom and the United States, raising interesting questions about environmental policy-making. This title will be of interest to students of Environmental Studies.

Book Residential Electricity Consumption in Urbanizing China

Download or read book Residential Electricity Consumption in Urbanizing China written by Pui Ting Wong and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book forges a link between residential CO2 emissions and time use, focussing on China as a key case study. To provide a better understanding of the energy implications of the lifestyle differences between urban and rural China, Pui Ting Wong and Yuan Xu utilise time-use methodology as an alternative way to explore the links between individual lifestyle and residential electricity consumption. They begin by examining how Chinese citizens divide their time between daily activities, highlighting patterns around indicators including age, gender, education, and economic status. They go on to quantify CO2 intensities of these time-use activities. Through this linkage, this book presents an alternative strategy for climate-friendly living, highlighting the ways in which urban planning can be deployed to help individuals adapt their time-use patterns for CO2 mitigation. Providing a novel contribution to the growing literature on residential electricity consumption, Residential Electricity Consumption in Urbanizing China will be of great interest to scholars of climate policy, energy studies, time use, and urban planning.
