Book Power Aware Mobile Sensor Networks with Reconfigurable Computing Nodes

Download or read book Power Aware Mobile Sensor Networks with Reconfigurable Computing Nodes written by Reno Massarini and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portable electronic devices like laptops, PDAs, and cell phones are finding their way into more and more homes, offices, and classrooms. They typically come with batteries, wireless networking hardware, and a variety of options for connecting to a network (like radio frequency and infrared). The heart of a portable electronic device is generally an ASIC or a microprocessor. Portable electronic devices can form mobile wireless networks when traditional wired networks are down or non-existent. We want to maximize the lifetime of those networks without sacrificing a large amount of their processing performance. That is accomplish in this thesis by substituting an FPGA for an ASIC or a microprocessor in the portable electronic devices. An FPGA has the ability to implement many different versions of an application (called design points in this thesis) on its hardware. The differences between those design points are that devices power consumption and processing performance. Having many design points helps an FPGA maximize its battery lifetime without sacrificing a large amount of its processing performance. But, a microprocessor can now use a low power architecture or it can scale its frequency and voltage, thus creating several possible design points. In this thesis, a design point for a microprocessor is a version of an application with a specified frequency and voltage. A mobile wireless sensor network using FPGA based nodes with 16 design points generated 3 times more packets compared to a mobile wireless sensor network using microprocessor based nodes with 4 design points. Its base station received 5 times more packets. Simulations using that network ran 2 times longer.

Book Artificial Intelligence Based Energy Aware Routing Protocol AIEARP for Wireless Sensor Network

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence Based Energy Aware Routing Protocol AIEARP for Wireless Sensor Network written by Dr. Pooja Singh and published by Shineeks Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-16 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current progress in Wireless Sensor Network has taken to various new protocols formed especially for sensor networks in where the energy awareness is a necessary deliberation. Wireless Sensor Network is highly accessible for significant applications namely surveillance of security and environmental monitoring. The researchers all over the world are investigating about the most important parameter of wireless sensor network i.e. Energy. The main emphasis is given over the efficiency of energy as the energy saved by the wireless sensor network is less and the consumption of energy is high and this is the main reason behind the lifetime network depletion at a fast pace. There in the sensor nodes one more challenge is exhibited that is of the limited power capacity, so for the same the battery should be either charged or changed as there are several functions which are to be performed by the energy of the sensor nodes being aggregation, sensing and transmission of data and on board processing. Majorly, the energy is consumed by the wireless data transmission among the nodes and more energy is consumed as compared to the other sensing and processing operations of data. The high energy is consumed because the data is transmitted over a large distance as the nodes are located far from each other. Further, the collision, overhearing and idle listening of the nodes are the major reasons behind the high wastage of energy during the transmission and the communication of data. There are several applications, in which the nodes are disregarded, and thus worsening the failure of nodes and enhancing the problem of high energy consumption. The success of the application is dependent over the network lifetime and the exchange or the recharging of the batteries is costly as well as not feasible. Therefore, the attention of the researchers is seeking towards usage and the consumption of the energy. Further, the development of such energy efficient network should be done which should cover and provide solution for all the above mentioned challenges so that the utility of the wireless sensor networks is enhanced in the applications related to it. The main intention of this study and book is to investigate in detail about the concept “An Intelligent Energy Aware Routing Protocol using Data Fusion Technique in Wireless Sensor Networks”. Significance of the Book: This book convers and discusses about previous studies carried out in the area of data fusion and the crucial issue in energy reduction of the sensor modes during the data fusion. The main objectives of this book a) To analyze the energy aware routing protocol in wireless sensor network; b) To examine the maximum energy consumption for routing process to sustain long life batter power in wireless sensor network.; c) To analyze the routing protocol enhancement by applying data fusion technique; d)To explore the routing protocol enhancement by applying data fusion technique; e)To propose an algorithm to integrate data fusion technique to enhance the consumption of energy. This book study is constrained to wireless sensor networks and limited to data fusion technique. However, this book study evaluates the concept of “An Intelligent Energy Aware Routing Protocol using Data Fusion Technique in Wireless Sensor Networks”. Book Energy Management for Battery powered Reconfigurable Computing Platforms and Networks

Download or read book Energy Management for Battery powered Reconfigurable Computing Platforms and Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portable embedded systems have become increasingly popular over the past few years. Personal digital assistants, pocket computers, mobile phones, digital cameras and GPS based portable navigation systems are some of the examples. These systems have inherent limitations in terms of their energy requirements, size, weight, cost and processing power. Since batteries are finite sources of energy, with varying and limited opportunities of getting recharged, it becomes necessary to manage the battery energy aggressively. In this work we concentrate on Portable Reconfigurable Computing Platforms which either have Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) as their main processing element or have a heterogeneous mix of embedded processors, voltage scalable processors and FPGAs. For these systems we propose and study different architectures, methodologies and algorithms which enable us to make better decisions for achieving a trade-off between battery consumption and performance. We first focus on platform level battery-efficiency and then by extending the tools and methodologies developed for individual platforms to a network of these systems we have studied network wide battery-efficiency for a sensor network. As a part of platform level work we present a technique in which a single task is executed using a combination of cores instead of a single one, and show that by running a combination of cores it is possible to prolong the battery life or the number of calculations performed, depending upon the goal. We also introduce the concept of reconfigurable tiles and present a methodology which is based on the idea that by changing the active area of an FPGA significant battery savings are possible. Further, we present an iterative, heuristic algorithm for battery aware task sequencing and implementation-option (design-point) allocation for single and multiple processing unit execution. We have developed and used, as a hardware testbed, a portable reconfigurable platform called iPACE-V1, which we will also describe briefly. We have also studied the effects of battery-efficient execution on a sensor network with reconfigurable nodes and have shown that the total network lifetime can be increased many times by the use of RC based nodes as compared to traditional fixed processor based nodes. Finally, we present some directions where this work can be extended.

Book Power aware Control Strategies in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Power aware Control Strategies in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Hassan Jaleel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the trends towards decentralization, miniaturization, and longevity of deployment continue in many domains, power management has become increasingly important. In this work, we develop power-aware control strategies for wireless sensor networks to improve the lifetime of the network and to ensure that the desired performance is guaranteed. For the case of static networks (networks of agents with no mobility), we identify the problem of the effects of power variations on the performance of an individual sensing device and on the entire network. To address this problem in a randomly deployed sensor network comprising of sensing devices whose sensing range is a function of transmitted power, we propose power-aware controllers to compensate for the variations in available power and maintain desired performance. We also propose a novel energy-efficient sleep-scheduling scheme that is random in nature and allows limited coordination among neighboring sensors for making switching decisions. This scheme is based on the concept of a hard-core point process from stochastic geometry, in which neighboring points are allowed to interact with each other through some predefined interaction laws. For the case of mobile networks (networks of agents with mobility), we propose a solid framework for distributed power-aware mobility strategies that can achieve any desired global objective while minimizing total energy consumption. This goal is achieved by first exploring fundamental trade-offs among various modes of operations of mobile devices and then exploiting these trade-offs for minimizing energy consumption. Through this framework, a whole class of decentralized power-aware controllers emerge for solving canonical problems in multi-agent systems like connectivity maintenance, rendezvous, and coverage control.
