Book Employment Poverty and Rights in India

Download or read book Employment Poverty and Rights in India written by Dayabati Roy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In comparison to other social groups, India’s rural poor – and particularly Adivasis and Dalits - have seen little benefit from the country’s economic growth over the last three decades. Though economists and statisticians are able to model the form and extent of this inequality, their work is rarely concerned with identifying possible causes. Employment, Poverty and Rights in India analyses unemployment in India and explains why the issues of employment and unemployment should be the appropriate prism to understand the status of wellbeing in India. The author provides a historical analysis of policy interventions on behalf of the colonial and postcolonial state with regard to the alleviation of unemployment and poverty in India and in West Bengal in particular. Arguing that, as long as poverty - either as a concept or as an empirical condition - remains as a technical issue to be managed by governmental technologies, the ‘poor’ will be held responsible for their own fate and the extent of poverty will continue to increase. The book contends that rural unemployment in India is not just an economic issue but a political process that has consistently been shaped by various socio-economic, political and cultural factors since the colonial period. The analysis which depends mainly on ethnography extends to the implementation of the ‘New Rights Agenda’, such as the MGNREGA, at the rural margin. Challenging the dominant approach to poverty, this book will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of South Asian studies, Indian Political Economy, contemporary political theories, poverty studies, neo-liberalism, sociology and social anthropology as well as development studies.

Book Economic Reforms Unemployment and Poverty

Download or read book Economic Reforms Unemployment and Poverty written by Meenu Agrawal and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and unemployment are the two most formidable problems of the Indian economy. Developing employment opportunities has been an important objective of development planning in India. Though employment has increased over the years, growth in the population and the labor force has aggravated the unemployment problem year after year. The achievement of an employment-for-all objective is nowhere in sight. Due to lack of employment opportunities, millions of people still live below the poverty line. More distressingly, there is no hope of the two formidable problems of poverty and unemployment being solved in the near future. India's tenth Five Year Plan (2002-07) document has recognized that the unemployment problem would be aggravated, much less mitigated, during the Plan period and thereafter. The Indian economy took a new direction when the government announced its new industrial policy in the Parliament in July 1991. Since then, the economic reforms process has encompassed all areas of the economy. The wide-ranging reforms, initiated and implemented since 1991, have induced greater efficiency and competitiveness in all spheres of economic activity. How these reforms have impacted on the growth pattern, in terms of employment generation and reduction in poverty, is a matter of intense debate among economists and social scientists. This book examines these concerns, contributing to the existing and growing body of literature on various aspects of economic reforms in India.

Book Job Creation and Poverty Reduction in India

Download or read book Job Creation and Poverty Reduction in India written by Sadiq Ahmed and published by Sage Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid growth since 1980 has transformed India from the world′s 50th ranked economy in nominal US dollars to the 12th largest in 2003. When income is measured with regard to purchasing power parity, the Indian economy occupies 4th place, after the United States, Japan, and China. Along with growing incomes, India′s increasingly outward orientation and the growing optimism about its economy has led to a sweeping rise in international investors′ interest. At the same time evidence suggests that income inequality is rising and the gap in average per capita income between the rich and poor states is growing. Election results at the national and state level suggest that unless the issue of growing income inequality and inequality in standard of living is tackled upfront, there is a risk that the economic reform momentum might slow down. If this happens, growth will suffer. This book provides an in-depth treatment of growth and employment issues in India. It reviews India′s long-term growth experience, emerging constraints and challenges, and the way forward for sustaining rapid growth along with more and better employment. Specifically, the book identifies ways in which investment can be improved to raise productivity and reduce the cost of doing business, thereby promoting domestic and foreign private investment. It looks at the growth and productivity challenges of agriculture and suggests policies that will help raise farm productivity and incomes. It explains the reason for the low overall employment elasticity of past growth and why there has been limited expansion of good jobs, and concludes by suggesting critical reform options for increasing employment.
