Book Globalization and the Mission of the Church

Download or read book Globalization and the Mission of the Church written by Neil J. Ormerod and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various social, political, economic and cultural commentators are presently arguing that human history is reaching a decisive stage in its development, a stage marked by increased interconnection between peoples, the compression of space and time, a sharing of ideas at unprecedented levels, global trade and finance, and so on. The shorthand word used to encompass these phenomena is "globalization". Some embrace it, others reject it, while still others dispute its existence. But with the abundance of literature and debate that it generates, the topic cannot be ignored. From its inception in the missionary mandate of Jesus (Matthew 28), Christianity has had a global dimension to its mission. Christianity is not a spectator to globalization but one of its agents, one of the forces at work which have extended interconnection between peoples, shared ideas and promoted social, political and cultural links. The purpose of the present work is not to provide a complete response to the question of the mission of the church in a globalizing world, but to establish a framework within which answers may be sought. Grounded in the writings of Bernard Lonergan and Robert Doran, it develops a theology of history and addresses the churches response to the impact of globalization on vital, social, cultural, personal and religious values. The project brings together the perspectives of Catholicism and Pentecostalism, the former providing a depth of wisdom and tradition, the latter drawing on the insight of a newly emerging movement that has taken root in every continent with remarkable energy and enthusiasm.

This up-to-date resource by a veteran leader in global development work with World Vision orients readers to the history of globalization and to a Christian theological perspective on it, explores concrete realities by focusing on global poverty, and helps readers reimagine Christian mission in ways that announce the truly good news of Christ and God's kingdom. Book Religion International Relations and Development Cooperation

Download or read book Religion International Relations and Development Cooperation written by Berma Klein Goldewijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Religion is high on the agenda of international politics today. Though there has been a retreat from religion in Europe, the international debate on the meaning and relevance of religion has intensified after the Iranian revolution and has gained new strength with the recent terror attacks, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the proliferation of intrastate conflict, and the process of European integration. The issues of secularism and its relationship to democracy, globalization and foreign policy are explored in this book. It is most relevant for politicians, policymakers, academic researchers, non-governmental organisations, peace and development practitioners, as well as the media. The book deals with the practical and policy-related consequences of the debate for development organisations and their views on poverty, religion and conflict. The Society for International Development (SID) has brought together eminent international writers and leading authorities in the field of religion, coming from different backgrounds and regions. Among the contributors are Peter Berger, Leonardo Boff, Abdullahi An-Na’im, Riffat Hassan, Thomas Pogge, Scott M. Thomas and Jonathan Fox."

Book Globalization and Poverty

Download or read book Globalization and Poverty written by Ann Harrison and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the percentage of the world’s population living on less than a dollar a day has been cut in half. How much of that improvement is because of—or in spite of—globalization? While anti-globalization activists mount loud critiques and the media report breathlessly on globalization’s perils and promises, economists have largely remained silent, in part because of an entrenched institutional divide between those who study poverty and those who study trade and finance. Globalization and Poverty bridges that gap, bringing together experts on both international trade and poverty to provide a detailed view of the effects of globalization on the poor in developing nations, answering such questions as: Do lower import tariffs improve the lives of the poor? Has increased financial integration led to more or less poverty? How have the poor fared during various currency crises? Does food aid hurt or help the poor? Poverty, the contributors show here, has been used as a popular and convenient catchphrase by parties on both sides of the globalization debate to further their respective arguments. Globalization and Poverty provides the more nuanced understanding necessary to move that debate beyond the slogans.

Book excerpt: In his exploration of the interaction between religion and worldwide social and cultural change, the author examines the major theories of global change and discusses the ways in which such change impinges on contemporary religious practice, meaning and influence. Beyer explores some of the key issues in understanding the shape of religion today, including religion as culture and as social system, pure and applied religion, privatized and publicly influential religion, and liberal versus conservative religions. He goes on to apply these issues to five contemporary illustrative cases: the American Christian Right; Liberation Theology movements in Latin America; the Islamic Revolution in Iran; Zionists in Israel; and religiou

Book Transnational Social Policies

    Book Details:
  • Author : International Development Research Centre (Canada)
  • Publisher : IDRC
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 0889368546
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Transnational Social Policies written by International Development Research Centre (Canada) and published by IDRC. This book was released on 1999 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationships between social policy and human development are the subject of much research and theorizing. The literature in this area, however, examines these issues strictly within national contexts. What influence will international agendas such as NAFTA, the World Summit for Social Development, and Habitat II have? Transnational Social Policies specifically addresses the worldwide trend for national policies on human and social development to be increasingly influenced by agendas that are international, or "transnational," in nature. In doing so, the book examines the underlying international developmental, ethical, economic, and political issues shaping national policies in health, education, and employment in the developing world. This book's focus on the "transnational" character of the social policy debate makes it a truly unique and original contribution to the literature. It will appeal to the academic community, worldwide, in international development, public policy and administration, and social work; policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in the field of public (social) policy; and the international community of individuals and organizations working in international social development.

Book The Church and International Development

Download or read book The Church and International Development written by and published by Dissertation.com. This book was released on 1999-06-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful new book on the challenges of international development and how the church can gain a more effective voice in working for solutions. "Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten; nor the hope of the poor be taken away". This prayer from the Book of Common Prayer expresses our hope as a people of faith committed to seeking justice and peace. The Church and International Development: Seeking Justice and Peace in Mission to the World's Poor is the first straightforward primer on the role of the church in dealing with the problems of international development. In this book, Jay Lawlor presents easy-to-understand explanations of the issues pertaining to sustainable development. He discusses such important topics as global poverty, the international debt burden, human development, the environment, and the roles of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). Lawlor provides startling evidence on the profound levels of poverty and inequality in the world. Over 50% of the world's population live in poverty, with 1.5 billion living on less than $1 per day. Of the world's nearly 6 billion people, 4.4 billion live in developing countries. Of the developing world population, 60% lack access to basic sanitation, 33% lack safe drinking water, 25% lack adequate housing, and 20% lack modern health services. The chasm between the 'have' and 'have not' grows wider and there is no starker contrast than the fact that the world's three richest people own assets that exceed the combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the world's poorest 48 countries. The author invites each of us to gain a deeper understanding of these immense global challenges. He is not so presumptuous as toprovide all the solutions (the fact of the matter is we don't have all the solutions yet), but he does identify realistic recommendations on how each of us can help. Lawlor brings tremendous insight about the leading research and policies on international development and suggests how the church can make its voice more effectively heard in these areas of decision-making. It is intended that individuals will read this book and then use the provided Discussion Points in developing forums to promote dialogue and action in working for solutions. This is a must read for every member of the church!
