Book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century

Download or read book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century written by Mercy Tembon and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persuasive evidence demonstrates that gender equality in education is central to economic development. Despite more than two decades of accumulated knowledge and evidence of what works in improving gender equality, progress on the ground remains slow and uneven across countries. What is missing? Given that education is a critical path to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women, what is holding us back? These questions were discussed at the global symposium Education: A Critical Path to Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, which was sponsored by the World Bank in October 2007. Girls' Education in the 21st Century is based on background papers developed for the symposium. The book's chapters reflect the current state of knowledge on education from a gender perspective and highlight the importance of, and challenges to, female education, as well as the interdependence of education and development objectives. The last chapter presents five strategic directions for advancing gender equality in education and their implications for World Bank operations. Girls' Education in the 21st Century will be of particular interest to researchers, educators, school administrators, and policy makers at the global, national, regional, and municipal levels.

Book Women s empowerment in agriculture and dietary quality across the life course Evidence from Bangladesh

Download or read book Women s empowerment in agriculture and dietary quality across the life course Evidence from Bangladesh written by Sraboni, Esha and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using nationally representative survey data from rural Bangladesh, this paper examines the relationship between women’s empowerment in agriculture and indicators of individual dietary quality. Our findings suggest that women’s empowerment is associated with better dietary quality for individuals within the household, with varying effects across the life course. Women’s empowerment is associated with more diverse diets for children younger than five years, but empowerment measures are not consistently associated with increases in nutrient intake for this age group. Women’s empowerment is positively and significantly associated with adult men’s and women’s dietary diversity and nutrient intakes. Different empowerment domains may have different impacts on nutrition, but other characteristics, such as maternal schooling and household socioeconomic status, may play a more important role for younger children. The importance of maternal education in the dietary quality of young children, and the relatively greater importance of women’s empowerment for older children and adults, imply that policies designed to empower women and improve nutritional status should be informed by knowledge of which specific domains of women’s empowerment matter for particular nutritional outcomes at specific stages of the life course.

Book Enhancing Women s Participation in Economic Development

Download or read book Enhancing Women s Participation in Economic Development written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seventeenth edition of the World Development Report focuses on services that are essential for households, business, and governments to function-- transport, telecommunications, water and sanitation, power and gas, and major water works. --Quantity vs. Quality-- Infrastructure is one of the areas in which government policy and finance have an important role to play because of its pervasive impact on economic development and human welfare. World Development Report 1994 presents new strategies for developing infrastructure in more effective, less wasteful ways. The Report shows that the quantity of investment cannot be the exclusive focus of policy. It is also vital that the quality of infrastructure service be improved. Readers are provided with a review of developing countries' experience with infrastructure development and an assessment of its current state. The Report asserts that the time is ripe for change. It considers new ways of meeting public needs for services from infrastructure--ways that are more efficient, more user-responsive, more environmentally friendly, and more resourceful in using both the public and private sectors. --Changing the incentives-- To promote more efficient and responsive delivery of infrastructure services, the Report points to the need to change incentives through the application of three instruments--commercial management, competition, and stakeholder involvement. The Report also identifies trends that will facilitate improvements in the performance of infrastructure. These include innovation in technology and regulatory management, the new willingness of governments to involve the private sector, and increased concern about social and environmental sustainability. Benefits from improved performance would unquestionably be large. Approximately $200 billion is invested in the sector annually in the developing world, and the savings that would accrue from better provision and performance would be substantial.
